Oh god, what has happened to my interface?

It's horrible! It's all Times New Roman and all the frames have gone to pot so it's a huge linear scroll and I haven't seen this happen before except with the new government department websites just after the election and I don't know what to do.

That happens sometimes, if you refresh it usually goes back to normal.

LadyWellian · 12/05/2011 13:07

Bertie I've refreshed and refreshed, and even gone straight to pages I know won't be cached - nothing's made a difference so far Sad

OP posts:
BertieBotts · 12/05/2011 13:10

Oh ok - then I don't know, sorry!

DamianTech · 12/05/2011 13:10

Hi LadyWellian,

Can you tellm us which browser you are using? And have you tried re-starting it?

LadyWellian · 12/05/2011 13:22

Hi Damian. I'm using IE6 - at work, and systems horribly outdated. I haven't tried the old 'turn it off and on again' yet, though I've closed the window and opened a new one several times.

OP posts:
LadyWellian · 12/05/2011 13:52

And now I've begged our IT people for an upgrade, got IE8, restarted and it's still like it

OP posts:
LadyWellian · 12/05/2011 14:16

Pleeeeease help! I've done everything I can think of.

OP posts:
LadyWellian · 12/05/2011 14:35

Pretty please?

OP posts:
LadyWellian · 12/05/2011 15:21

Is a side-effect of this interface problem that I also become invisible?

OP posts:
hugglymugly · 12/05/2011 15:40

Are you getting the same effect on every website you look at?

I don't use IE, but I think there's some sort of accessibility option that allows a user to override the style sheet or fonts/colours used by the website.

LadyWellian · 12/05/2011 15:43

No, everything else is working fine. It's just MN.

LadyWellian · 12/05/2011 15:45

Having upgraded my browser I tried using the 'compatibility view', but it made no difference.

OP posts:
hugglymugly · 12/05/2011 15:56

Have you by accident clicked on the mobile version? If you scroll down to the very end of the screen, is there an option to view the standard version?

LadyWellian · 12/05/2011 16:00

No, huggly I actually tried the mobile version - it looked better than this but the writing ws very small, so I went back to the not-working 'standard' version.

Hi LadyWellian,

Does your page look anything like this? If so, please try going to Page -> Style -> Default Style, and see if that fixes it. If this isn't the problem you're experiencing, please let us know.

hugglymugly · 12/05/2011 16:18

I don't have any more ideas, sorry, other than maybe you could bump this thread a bit later to get the attention of the "evening shift".

LadyWellian · 12/05/2011 16:27

Bless you huggly. Yes, Damian, it does look like that - thanks. Where do I find 'page'?

OP posts:
LadyWellian · 12/05/2011 16:33

OK, found'page', but it was already on 'default style'.

OP posts:
DamianTech · 12/05/2011 17:09

How perplexing. Perhaps try resetting your security properties? Double-click where it says "Internet" in the bottom-right corner, then choose "Reset all zones to default level".

I would guess that you've re-started your PC since encountering this issue? If not, the tried and tested turn-it-off-and-on-again diagnosis is always worth a shot. ;)

LadyWellian · 12/05/2011 17:49

Thanks Damian. I tried the security thing but to no avail. I've rebooted a couple of times too. I don't work on Fridays so I'm going to toddle off now and see if it has resolved itself by the time I get back on Monday. Although if the problem follows me home (not that it should, as it seemed to happen here regardless of whether I was logged in or not) then I will start to feel properly victimised.

OP posts:
LadyWellian · 16/05/2011 12:29

It's still doing it Sad. I had a brief breakthrough when I clicked on My Mumsnet and the login screen looked normal, but as soon as I logged in to my profile it went back to crapola-view again.

Mine is doing it as well (At work), and its done it here at home a few times this evening.

HawthornLantern · 17/05/2011 02:08

Ah - I am having this problem too at work. I have tried Firefox (version 4), IE (8 I think) and today I downloaded Chrome to see if that was any better. It is doing the Times New Roman, frameless and completely un-navigable edition in all three browsers. At home on a Mac using Safari I am just fine. This began last week - Thursday. As all my work browsers are affected I thought there must be some other conflict but all my other software bits and pieces (to the extent I have access to look at them) seem to be up to date.

No idea what to try next

DamianTech · 17/05/2011 16:23

Hi LadyWellian (and all),

Well, we can't be sure why this is happening, but I can tell you what the problem is. We've recently moved most of our static files out into a separate domain name (cdnmn.com), and it would seem that for some reason, your browser is blocking requests to it.

This could be due to your firewall blocking the domain, or IE itself may have decided not to load anything from it (you can probably test this by going directly to the link above - it should redirect you to mumsnet.com). If possible you should add cdnmn.com to a list of trusted sources so that Mumsnet content appears correctly.

If this is not possible you may need to contact your IT guys to unblock the domain. I'd also recommend trying to load Mumsnet in another browser (if available) to see if you get the same problem. If all browsers load it incorrectly, it'll be a firewall issue, if not, it's an IE blocking-the-wrong-page issue.

Hope that helps. This had me scratching my head for a while.

Try playing with the Customise options, see if changing from Pages to no pages makes any difference, or the opposite no pages to pages.

If you don't see the Mumsnet header going across the page, then I suspect it might be failing to load some or all of the CSS.

Try loading the following page in your browser: Talk_new.css it should load quickly and display a list of words which may or may not make sense to you. Once your browser has got that page (without any errors coming up, such as it being blocked by your Work's firewall) then go back to Mumsnet Talk and see if it loads any better.

If anyone has a firewall set which permits specific domains, you need to add cdnmn.com to your permitted domains list, as that seems to now be the domain that the CSS is being hosted on, rather than Mumsnet.com (so permit both: cdnmn.com and mumsnet.com)
