Which ones?

Crossley Heath.

macaroniart · 13/10/2025 20:09

Oh I got excited hoping it was Bexley 😂

CheerfulMuddler · 13/10/2025 20:12

Maybetoofarsouth · 13/10/2025 20:00

Are you 21st too?

Nope, 17th.

ToilingAway · 13/10/2025 20:32

I need some advice on how school rankings work.

My chilld sat the tests for Crossley Heath and Heckmondwike Grammar and now we have the results as follows.

  1. Heckondwike Grammar ranked 102

  2. Crossley Heath - met qualifying standard in English, Mathematics and Creative Writing. They don't provide a ranking.

  3. Have one child already at Crossley Heath.

  4. Heckondwike have said that if we list them as first choice then we are guaranteed a place.

Ideally I would like my children to both attend Crossley but if I rank Crossley as no1 and Heckmondwike as no2 and we don't get into Crossley does that mean we lose Heckondwike place?

This is the wording below from their website.

The admissions test will consist of: a) Paper 1 - a test in English b) Paper 2 - a test in Mathematics c) Paper 3 - a test in Creative Writing.

After the tests are completed, the English and Mathematics papers are marked, age weighted and standardised and awarded a score. A qualifying standard will then be agreed by the Halifax Grammar Schools for these papers. Students meeting the qualifying standard for English and Mathematics will then have their Creative Writing paper judged by a panel of staff selected from the two Halifax Grammar Schools who have been trained accordingly.

Your child will be required to meet the qualifying standard in English, Mathematics and Creative Writing to be considered for a place at the Halifax Grammar Schools.

This information will be uploaded to parents’ accounts by mid-October and will indicate whether your child has achieved an eligible score. Achieving the qualifying standard in all 3 subjects does not guarantee your child a place.

Magnificentkitteh · 13/10/2025 20:53

No you won't lose the place. I don't know why so many schools give out misleading info on this. I suppose they mean if you put another school ahead of it you might get allocated that one instead - but you know that!

Congratulations on the results

Schoolhelp23 · 13/10/2025 20:54

@SFV That's what I'm thinking too, emails out then straight out the door with half term autoreply on! Best of luck to your DD.

Checking in for the first time....I have to admit to reading the whole thread but not really understanding most of it! I feel like I'm in a different world to most of you, I'm in Kent, DS sat the Kent test, results out Thursday at some point...been very stressful seeing all the local non grammar schools because we don't have a hope of getting our closest 3, we are just a tiny bit too far away.

He is autistic and sometimes struggles with school, secondary is where it could all go wrong. Before I started looking I wasn't too worried, but having seen the journey he's going to have to do to the schools he's likely to get into if he doesn't pass, I'm worried now! The schools themselves all have good things going for them, but the ones closer to us are so oversubscribed it's crazy.

I didn't do any prep with him until the July of this year and only then a little bit, one CGP book, just so he knew what to expect.
He could get a staff place at my grammar school, or there's a grammar in walking distance of somewhere I could drive him to possibly on my way to work, at a stretch. Getting home is a whole other issue!

Starting to get quite anxious, although I've been a ball of stress for weeks now really. Just need to know one way or the other!

All the other systems you're all dealing with sound crazy to me! Agree that it's so much to put on 10 year olds, which is why I kept it as casual as possible. Might backfire...

I feel you! I know it is so hard navigating through all of this and wanting the very best for our dc. Thinking if we are doing right by them and all of the logistics. Just so much to it! I’m sure once results are out, whatever the outcome - you’ll have a clearer head space in what to do next. Fingers crossed for you.

My Ds has also sat the Kent test and is also autistic and has ADHD. Similarly to you, we’ve had the laid back approach to the 11 plus. We’ve had a weekly tutor since middle of year 4 but only got serious towards the last few weeks of summer holiday (we’re quite last minute people) in which he did daily practice papers and some atom.

We’ve reminded him many many times no matter the results, we’re so proud of him and we are still a winner because we’ve learnt so much along the way. Also, Joe Wick’s line has been super helpful "If you’re gonna miss the bus, miss it running!"

I feel that’s helped, and also reassuring and talking about our alternative routes. Ds isn’t stressed as he knows he has tried his best and that’s all that matters end of the day. Although my husband and I on the other hand are stressing and biting our nails but Ds has no idea as we are downplaying the heightened emotions. Not looking forward to sharing bad news if we have to with our 10year old 💔

Really hope it’s positive for those waiting for the Bexley results tomorrow, Kent results on Thursday and of course all the best to everyone x

It sounds like you have a good option in terms of the school you work at if he passes the exam? Good luck!

TheLiloAndTheSlowCooker · 13/10/2025 21:04

@ToilingAway - no, you won't lose your Heckmondwike place. The schools will look at everyone who has listed them as a preference and see whether they qualify, and then you'll be offered the highest on your list of preferences you qualify for. The schools don't know what order you put them down in.

(and congratulations: we are in the same position, but on the North Halifax side)

Exactly :))) Good luck to your DD too! O ly another million days to go!

Icantpeopleanymore · 13/10/2025 22:06

@Sunshinemam @Magnificentkitteh

Thank you...I'm trying to be very light-hearted about it all and I've said how nice the other schools are so hopefully he won't feel like he's missed out if he doesn't pass...

His best friend who he relies on quite a lot also took it...I've already explained he might end up at a different school anyway and how brilliant it will be to have new friends and a good friend who they will have new things to talk about with... except he doesn't really do two way conversation 😂

I've been so stressed, barely sleeping...but it'll all work out one way or another!

My school is great, but then the other side is that he'd have to travel in with me, a 30 mins car ride, plus wait for me some days, plus I'll have to drive in on my day off.

But, I know it, he gets safety and comfort from me being there, and we do good things for the send kids. However, I also know not all the teachers actually make allowances, and that worries me. But the other grammar could be the same and is much more academic, less arts etc. and it's an independent journey that would take nearly an hour by bus/walking that he just isn't capable of yet 🤷

I hate having to decide all this when he's 10! He's too little!

LadyCrazyCatLady · 13/10/2025 22:25

After all that waiting, DD has passed her 11+ and should be joining her sister at our local grammar school next September.

I'm so pleased for her.

A staff place at a decent grammar! What an amazing option to have! Can he get the bus on the day you aren’t normally working? Sounds doable if the other journey would be an hour bus anyway? Sounds like you have the back up option of dreams to me if he doesn’t get the other one. I’d be sleeping easy in your shoes 😂 our back up is not what we want 😞

Purpletoes · 14/10/2025 08:28

This might be the longest 30 mins ever keep refreshing in case email is sent early. I just need to know.

Edited

I read it as the DS would only get the staff place if he passes the exam but not sure?

Good luck to those awaiting results.

Anyone know when to expect St Mary Magdalene or Latymer round 2?

SatsumaCat · 14/10/2025 09:00

I've barely slept! Keeping refreshing!

LadyCrazyCatLady · 14/10/2025 09:01

Feel for all of you refreshing madly today. That was us yesterday and it's frustrating! Our results were finally emailed to us at 8pm last night, after we'd nearly given up hope of receiving them.

Huge good luck to your DCs

macaroniart · 14/10/2025 09:02

Knew it was going to crash

SatsumaCat · 14/10/2025 09:02

Service unavailable. It's crashed. Aargh.

hereandthere14 · 14/10/2025 09:02

The results are out online. It’s a no for us.

SatsumaCat · 14/10/2025 09:05

Sorry to hear that hereandthere14. I'm still trying to get through.

Whenwillfreetimereturn · 14/10/2025 09:05

Same here @Purpletoes and @hereandthere14 this is torture.

great the email has been sent and as someone said earlier I now cannot get to log in. This is awful. Why not just send an email and put us out of our misery 😩

Purpletoes · 14/10/2025 09:05

It was a no for us too so close only 2 marks off.
