waiting list experiences / help!

Just after a little advice - anecdotes - stories - cheerful reflections...

My daughter wasn't offered ANY of her preferred secondary schools (we weren't fussy - would happily have sent her to all of them - and we did include her catchment school). Instead she's been offered a place at a school across town (c. an hour's bus ride) with a less good reputation. We're in Cambridge, which seems to have had an absurd bulge year.

She is 10th on the waiting list for our 1st preference (240 PAN), and I'm just trying to understand how these waiting lists work. Does anyone have any insight?

In particular: are places offered as soon as they become available, or do schools / LAs wait until after certain dates - perhaps the deadline for acceptances?

If we decide to home-school or manage to find (and indeed afford) a place at an Independent, can we remain on the state waiting list?

Does 10th sound hopeful in this situation - bearing in mind the almost general over-subscription here? I'm torn between remaining optimistic and gently preparing my daughter for a change of plan, but I've no idea how much movement is usual on these lists, or when it happens (why would anyone change their mind in July??).

I'd be so grateful for any thoughts anyone wanted to share - we're thinking about an appeal too, but just hoping against hope that won't be necessary.

Second appeal letter in. Hoping that the two schools we’re appealing to might also update us soon as to WL positions, as they both open tomorrow.

Secondarywoes · 12/05/2024 17:34

Any Cambridge people attending Chesterton appeal tomorrow? Apparently there are over 100 of us! 😳

DizzyDandilion · 12/05/2024 20:24

Wow...that is a huge number!
I feel for everyone stressed by this.
Good luck but remember some of us very happy with the schools you are trying to avoid...

pearlsthatwerent · 13/05/2024 08:05

I'll be there! Wondering what on earth they can say in the face of the unprecedented numbers appealing...

We got a St Bede's place off the waiting list which I wasn't expecting. 100 appeals for Chesterton is MENTAL!!!

shockeditellyou · 13/05/2024 09:02

Also (posted too soon) - there was a rumour that at least one school was going to open a bulge class. Not sure how much weight to put on that as any school doing so would have had to rustle up extra teachers and space by now, for a September start...

pearlsthatwerent · 13/05/2024 09:09

@shockeditellyou Wonderful news! What a relief. Interesting about the bulge class - it would be a very rational and sensible thing to do, but I agree the logisitcs are probably tricky. Maybe we'll hear something today.

It's crazy, given some people are now winding up with schools in St Neots. I don't understand why it wasn't sorted before now. Given they want to stick up new houses everywhere in Cambridge, they'll need more places even with declining birth rates.

DizzyDandilion · 15/05/2024 05:58

How did you all do with your appeals? I know parents who appealed a couple of years back for Chesterton and didn't get it. However, both their kids happy and thriving at NCA. Problem this year I imagine is that NCA possibly full as well.

pearlsthatwerent · 15/05/2024 08:40

Hello @DizzyDandilion ! Yes indeed: NCA full too, so most of us (I think) are appealing against schools on the other side of town or even further away - we are. (Because of traffic and bus times the journey for us would be 1hr 15 each way.) No one has heard about the appeal yet; they're still hearing cases, and will be until next week - so many of us...!

Very frustrating @pearlsthatwerent
I wonder if NCA will be able to expand in the near future. They are improving their building at the moment and developing better areas for music, drama, a library and also specialist provision. Building work at the moment. All looks rather exciting.

Secondarywoes · 15/05/2024 18:07

The panel said they would be hearing appeals for NCA too.

Secondarywoes · 08/06/2024 15:23

I wasn't successful with the appeal. I actually had a dream where they said my DC could start there and see how they liked it! 😂 It takes up so much of your life. I would be very interested to know whether there were any successful appeals.

shockeditellyou · 08/06/2024 15:36

Sorry to hear that @Secondarywoes Where are you on waiting lists? There’s been a sudden flurry of movement in the past week or so- people who were in the 20s on the Sawston waiting list have all been offered places. Not sure about other Cambridge schools.

Secondarywoes · 08/06/2024 19:14

Oh that sounds hopeful! Thanks, I will email for an update on positions.

pearlsthatwerent · 09/06/2024 14:13

Hello @Secondarywoes ! No success here either - I heard very few made it (don't know exact numbers; maybe 2 or 3?). Do you have any other appeals in train? We've got a last one this week, but I'm no longer holding out much hope, to be honest. And I haven't been able to bring myself to ask for updated waiting list positions, either: we keep going down...

OP posts:
Secondarywoes · 09/06/2024 14:56

@pearlsthatwerent no more appeals, I only had a case for CCC. That's interesting that you heard of a couple of successes. Good luck with your next appeal, you never know! Sorry @shockeditellyou I missed your question, we're on WL for CCC and IVC.

DizzyDandilion · 10/06/2024 18:25

Have you got a local school place at the moment @Secondarywoes ?
Apologies, you probably have said earlier in thread.

Secondarywoes · 10/06/2024 19:13

@DizzyDandilion Yes, St Bedes, but I'd prefer a closer school as we're 5 miles away.

DizzyDandilion · 10/06/2024 19:20

I understand @Secondarywoes . Also, have Town traffic to contend with.

DizzyDandilion · 10/06/2024 19:22

Being able to to walk to school been great for my children. Both involved themselves in the many enrichment activities and clubs available with ease.
