Commute to Hampton Boys ( If avoiding coach)

Hi Parents,
I would like to hear from parents whos DS is at Hamptons boys and do not use the coach. ( Thats an extra 2K). Any areas to live where the DS can take the public transport or Dad drives for 15 min ( occasions where Dad needs to drive for events and afer school sports). We got a few suggestions like

Teddington / Strawberry hill - These arears might not have a lot of life - might be more rural someone said.
Can DS commute from Kingston or Richmond using TFL. People said Kingston or richmond have a bit more life due to their town centres.

We will be relocating from Canary wharf. So its a big East to west move.

Lots of boys and girls from LEH next door commute using the bus. The buses stop practically outside the school. The train station is not conveniently located. The route 111 runs between Heathrow and Kingston town centre and the R70 runs between Hampton and Richmond town centre going through Twickenham. Teddington, Strawberry Hill and other places will require bus changes but all still doable. All of the above are nice areas and have become more vibrant and diverse over the last 10-20 years, more London-like

CJFJ1 · 26/10/2023 19:56

Yes, the 111 bus route runs directly from the town centre in Kingston to a bus stop right outside Hampton School (depending on the time of day, the bus journey is about 25 minutes long).

Sb123455 · 26/10/2023 20:07

Really depends if you’re renting/buying and how much you want to spend/if you need to commute yourself? It’s the same conundrum for many as Teddington not great for transport into town and it’s all expensive!
If you’re doing drops and pick ups every day, 15 mins isn’t going to buy you very far as the traffic around there is awful?

mrDoubt · 26/10/2023 20:30

Hi
Thanks for the feed back. I will be renting. Since I am working from home, 15 min drive each way is something I can afford to do every day
Google maps shows 11-15 min from Teddington to Hampton boys.
Whats the bus journey time from Teddington to Hampton = Is it 111 or 285

This shows 25 min as you stated @Sb123455
Might be a good option to consider. But in heavy traffic, things can get longer right?

Anywhere you can get with busses: 111, R70 but also 285 and few more that are stopping next to Sainsbury's St Clares. It is a short 10 min walk to school

111 is going to Kingston but by Hammpton Court and not Teddington. 285 goes to Teddington. Or take R68 in Teddington and change to R70 in Hampton Hill....

Twickenham, Strawberry Hill or Richmond is easier as R70 is there

mrDoubt · 26/10/2023 21:59

THank you Everyone ! I will explore these routes

I don't have a DS at the school but live right by it. Please avoid driving if possible, the area is absolutely horrendous for students being dropped and picked up by private car. The bus links to the school are really excellent. The R70, as pp have said, links Hampton to Richmond so easy commute if you live in Richmond or Twickenham or even slightly into London on the District Line as you just pick up the bus from Richmond station. The 111 links Kingston to Heathrow airport so links Kingston Hampton wick Teddington and in other direction Hounslow and the airport towns. You also have the R68 Hampton Court through to Kew - bus stop a 10 min walk from the school.

mrDoubt · 26/10/2023 22:50

Thank you @hamptonite !!!

The bus journey on R70 is a good 44 min. And then the walk from home to the Richmond bus station. So am looking at 50 min -60 min commute.
Hence renting near Teddington is the best option in some sense.

On route 111, whats the name of the stop at Teddington ?

ok @JustWingItLifeEyelinerEverything mentioned route 111 does not stop at Teddington. So am looking at Bus 285.

285 to Hanworth Road bus stop and then 10 mins walk

KJ2019 · 26/10/2023 22:57

It wouldn’t be a 15 min drive at school times. The roads around the school get blocked with cars and school coaches as there are 3 schools next to each other

wanttokickoffbutcant · 26/10/2023 23:47

I live in Teddington and have never before heard it described as rural! I am a ten/fifteen minute walk to Kingston!

The traffic going up to Hampton Court in the morning can be brutal, and some evenings if travelling later after sport etc. 285 can be bad going through Hampton Hill.

BeyondTeddington · 26/10/2023 23:54

Haha I’ve never heard of Teddington being described as rural - we are in zone 6 not in the middle of nowhere. If you are working from home and don’t want to battle the traffic in the morning by car or bus, Hampton Hill is within walking distance of the school and is a very nice place to live. It’s not as busy as the Canary Wharf area, but that’s part of its appeal.

wanttokickoffbutcant · 26/10/2023 23:55

You can check the journey on the TFL website to see how long the journey might be at various time and from various stops.

urbanesque · 27/10/2023 05:59

I'm amused by your description of Teddington as rural too. It's not, and it has plenty of "life". 😁 Suggest you visit!

If you need fast trains to Waterloo, Twickenham is better than Teddington, but more crowded. Teddington is better if you prefer a slightly slower train with a seat.

I live in Hampton Hill which is walkable to Hampton Boys. The Waterloo trains from the local station (Fulwell) are less frequent than from Teddington or Twickenham, but we don't need to use them very often, so it suits us. We can also easily get to Teddington (15 min walk, 5 min bus), Twickenham (20 min walk, 10 min bus), and Kingston (45 min walk across lovely Bushy Park, or 20 min bus). Buses take longer than that at peak times, but there are bus lanes. The local council encourages active travel, so there's a 20mph speed limit and lots of encouragement for cycling.

wideawakeinthemiddleofthenightagain · 27/10/2023 06:58

I would think seriously about the impact the school run will have on your working day. It is quite a restriction. It won't be 15 mins - and obviously you have to drive home too, After school is worse IME as they might be let out late, forget something & go back for it or get chatting to friends.
I suggest you visit these areas a couple of times and then actually do these journeys yourself on a school day to see what they're like. One of the public bus routes we thought would be an option for our DC isn't as, by the time they would get on, the bus is usually full.

JustWingItLifeEyelinerEverything · 27/10/2023 07:09

@hamptonite The 111 links Kingston to Heathrow airport so links Kingston Hampton wick Teddington

111 goes from Hampton to Hampton Court and then Kingston. It does't go through Teddington. 285 goes through Teddington or R70 and swap to R68 at Hampton Hill

JustWingItLifeEyelinerEverything · 27/10/2023 07:12

There are trains that go to Twickenham from Fulwell? Yes, they go through Teddington but ...Twickenham?

Edited

Yes. If I commute into Waterloo I get the 7.42 from Fulwell, via Twickenham/Richmond. See screenshot. Many people leave the train at Twickenham to connect to a faster service (10 mins quicker) but I prefer to stay put and have a seat all the way.

JustWingItLifeEyelinerEverything · 27/10/2023 07:49

I see screenshot but it doesn't state Twickenham. The so called Kingston loop that Fulwell is on goes through Teddington Kingston Richmond Clapham junction. What is the new route via Twickenham?

JustWingItLifeEyelinerEverything · 27/10/2023 07:57

And btw if it goes also through Twickenham now it is great news as it never did and trains were awfully slow to Waterloo through that Kingston loop. Twickenham have a speedy service

peekaboo1 · 27/10/2023 08:06

There have always been a couple of services that go through Twickenham and Richmond in the morning, rather than the usual Wimbledon route. It's been that way since I was commuting 20+years ago. Apart from those very few morning trains, all others run the usual route.

Meredusoleil · 27/10/2023 08:08

I live in Hampton and caught the train the day before yesterday to Waterloo.

Normally, I have to take an all stops one to Shepperton for the return, but as it was during peak hours, I noticed there were extra trains that went via Richmond and Twickenham instead of round the Kingston loop.

There is only one of these trains an hour unfortunately and only during peak hours, but it would have meant 34 mins instead of 41 mins journey time for me.
