Commute to Hampton Boys ( If avoiding coach)

mrDoubt · 26/10/2023 19:05

Hi Parents,
I would like to hear from parents whos DS is at Hamptons boys and do not use the coach. ( Thats an extra 2K). Any areas to live where the DS can take the public transport or Dad drives for 15 min ( occasions where Dad needs to drive for events and afer school sports). We got a few suggestions like

Teddington / Strawberry hill - These arears might not have a lot of life - might be more rural someone said.
Can DS commute from Kingston or Richmond using TFL. People said Kingston or richmond have a bit more life due to their town centres.

We will be relocating from Canary wharf. So its a big East to west move.

I see screenshot but it doesn't state Twickenham. The so called Kingston loop that Fulwell is on goes through Teddington Kingston Richmond Clapham junction. What is the new route via Twickenham?

It's the trains via Richmond that also stop at Twickenham. Otherwise, they go round the Kingston loop ordinarily.

Rocknrollstar · 27/10/2023 08:11

You aren’t going to want to do that drive everyday for the next 7 years and your DC needs to develop independence. Thinking of the wear and tare on you and your car I’d put him on the coach

There have always been a couple of services that go through Twickenham and Richmond in the morning, rather than the usual Wimbledon route. It's been that way since I was commuting 20+years ago. Apart from those very few morning trains, all others run the usual route.

Yes, the return journey via Twickenham runs during the afternoon peak, and often on rugby days. It also runs if there are engineering works on the Teddington/Kingston/Wimbledon route.

If there are timetable restrictions e.g. due to overtime bans, the morning service gets cut.

peekaboo1 · 27/10/2023 08:20

Ah I clearly never finished work early enough for the return via Richmond so never knew those exist too! The Kingston loop has always been so annoying as it extends the journey time. Plus then having to catch the bus from Hampton station to home, it made the daily journey so long.

OP do bear in mind the buses around the area get very busy. There are 3 secondary schools in a row on the main road. If you can rent within walking distance (Hampton Hill or even Hampton itself) you can be within easy reach of the other towns within 10-15 mins on a bus/car/train. And Hampton Hill high st is quite cute and some decent shops and cafes

Fwiw, the Fulwell/Teddington/Kingston line is on the proposed Crossrail 2 route. The development is currently paused, but may be revived at some point: https://crossrail2.co.uk/route/route-map/.

We love living in Hampton Hill. We think of Bushy Park as our back garden, especially on Summer evenings when the "visitors" have left,🙂 and we're regulars at Hampton Open Air Pool.

ah that may be it. I have never travelled during the morning rush hours and that is why never went that way. I wish they did it more across the day.
cannot wait for Crossrail 2....

JustWingItLifeEyelinerEverything · 27/10/2023 08:44

Apart from mentioned proximity to the Bushy Park, the best thing about Hampton or Hampton Hill is that there is a free parking and not only for residents. You can go on High Streets of both villages and as long as you find parking it is free. Maybe only one behind Tesco, Hampton Hill is paid
The other good thing in Hampton, Hampton Hill and Twickenham is proximity to M3/ Country Way. Teddington is more on the side.

There is one more bus that we have not metioned that is in a walking distance from Hampton Boys. 490 at Apex corner. It goes towards Richmond but in a different way than R70

hamptonite · 27/10/2023 08:53

JustWingItLifeEyelinerEverything · 27/10/2023 07:09

@hamptonite The 111 links Kingston to Heathrow airport so links Kingston Hampton wick Teddington

111 goes from Hampton to Hampton Court and then Kingston. It does't go through Teddington. 285 goes through Teddington or R70 and swap to R68 at Hampton Hill

Sorry my error, didn't mean to write Teddington!

Suffice to say the bus links to Hampton School - as well as the adjoining two secondaries - are excellent.

urbanesque · 27/10/2023 09:07

@mrDoubt , from Twickenham your son could get the R70 bus as others have said. Alternatively, they could get the 290 bus to Sainsburys in Uxbridge Rd, from where its a 15 min walk to Hampton school: https://tfl.gov.uk/bus/route/290/?direction=inbound

I live in Teddington and have never before heard it described as rural! I am a ten/fifteen minute walk to Kingston!

The traffic going up to Hampton Court in the morning can be brutal, and some evenings if travelling later after sport etc. 285 can be bad going through Hampton Hill.

Thats very comforting to hear. Maybe the friend was comparing it to Canary wharf . Thats positive !

I don't think there are many rural places within inside M25. Maybe here and there but not much. I would love it to be more rural lol

If you can afford it, the houses between Thames river and the high street in Twickenham would be your ideal bet. Beautiful, close to quick railway and motorway.

Did you son take 10+ with the deferred entry, as I don't think the 11+ and interviews are completed at HB?

peekaboo1 · 27/10/2023 09:43

I lived a short walk from the girls school next door to Hampton while attending there and it made such a big difference being able to walk. More independent, less worry about getting home after clubs and after school things, and more time to study rather than sitting on transport. Our place became a place for a school friends to come and hang out when commutes went wrong or parents got delayed.
If you have the ability to chose a walking distance place, would recommend you consider that.

Is he into anything else @mrDoubt ? There are excellent local clubs for rugby, cricket, hockey, volleyball, drama, and many other things.

Twickenham or Teddington ? hmm. yes, will drive down and check. depends on house availability,. we also have a younger DD who needs primary school place ( reception). we will have to do In year admissiion if we are moving in July 2024 after DS completes his year 6. Any recommendations for good primary schools will also be useful . I heard that all schools are heavily over subscribed.

So school availability / choices at Hampton hill / Teddinton / Twickenham.

@mrDoubt state or private for primary?

All the state primaries are good/outstanding from an Ofsted perspective, and all have children who are high performers. They used to be very oversubscribed but there's been a drop in the birthrate, so they're now much more accessible. People move in and out of the borough all the time so in-year places do come up all the time.

Hampton Hill families use Carlisle Infants & Hampton Hill Juniors, or Stanley (infants & juniors).

Teddington families use Stanley, St Mary's & St Peter's, Collis, or Hampton Wick infants.

Twickenham families use Trafalgar, Archdeacon Cambridge's, Twickenham Primary Academy, St Mary's.

urbanesque · 27/10/2023 10:18

p.s. if you are catholic, there are other options too.

Not all primary and infant schools are outstanding. Carlisle feeder to HHJS is Good and then Buckingham is Good , St Richard's is Inadequate

And btw if it goes also through Twickenham now it is great news as it never did and trains were awfully slow to Waterloo through that Kingston loop. Twickenham have a speedy service

The 8.12am from Fulwell goes via Twickenham and Richmong and gets in to Waterloo at 8.45am. There are a couple of trains every morning and every evening that go via Twickenham & Richmond. Richmond isn't on the Kingston loop.
