Commute to Hampton Boys ( If avoiding coach)

Hi Parents,
I would like to hear from parents whos DS is at Hamptons boys and do not use the coach. ( Thats an extra 2K). Any areas to live where the DS can take the public transport or Dad drives for 15 min ( occasions where Dad needs to drive for events and afer school sports). We got a few suggestions like

Teddington / Strawberry hill - These arears might not have a lot of life - might be more rural someone said.
Can DS commute from Kingston or Richmond using TFL. People said Kingston or richmond have a bit more life due to their town centres.

We will be relocating from Canary wharf. So its a big East to west move.

I was trying to explain the location of St Richard's to urbanesque but I gave up. If she calls that Feltham then let it be 🙈

I know right! It's literally next to the border of Hampton, in Hanworth. Which is part of Feltham to be fair.

Ofsted says it is in Feltham (see screenshot), and also says that it is Good. You originally mentioned it without saying where it was, hence the confusion with St Richard's in Ham. Thank you for clarifying the location, but I'm not sure why you're repeating it. 🥱

Must just tell everyone that I went to LEH in the 60s on the 285. Amazing how bus numbers don’t change!

mrDoubt · 27/10/2023 15:13

I was asking about the school bus from richmond. Those times seem very reasonable inspite of horrendous traffic. So a bit baffled. Am i missing something

Eg - If i took the school bus, website states 25 min
If i took a TFL bus or drove to school, maybe 45 min

That's probably because the car will get stuck in traffic, and the TfL bus will be using bus lanes but stopping every few mins so that lots of people can get on and off.

You really don’t want your kid at st ruchsrd’s. It’s not a great catchment- people need to get educated about catchments and ignoring ofsted. Ofsted cost £170 million a year and they are a govt con. They mean nothing.

Don't worry - St. Richards isn't on the op's radar, because they asked for primaries in Hampton Hill, Teddington and Twickenham, not Hampton or Hanworth. So not sure why it came up.

Because clearly you not local and have no idea where it is. It is on the verge of Hampton and people from Hampton send their kids there.
Unlike Hampton, Hampton Hill is very small. There are no schools, multiple primaries there. There is only Junior school there. Infant feeder to this school, Carlisle is in Hampton. Hampton Boys is in Hampton and not Hampton Hill. There is more likelihood to find a property and school in Hampton if talking about the schools and property market.

I wasn't recommending St Richards but listing it. About the catchments....hm, Hampton doesn't have a bad catchments for secondary school at all. They are in Turing catchment, Thamesmead, St Pauls, Bishop Grove, still in Teddington school catchment, St Richard Reynolds.
I would even say that because of proximity to Sunbury they have more choice than those in south Twickenham which is beyond Orlean Park catchment

@JustWingItLifeEyelinerEverything , I live in Hampton Hill, and didn't know where St Richard's was because I don't live near it and had no reason to look at a neighbouring borough's Primary Admissions Brochure when researching schools for my children. As I said, families in Hampton Hill (which the OP asked about) tend to use Carlisle/HHJS and Stanley. The OP did not ask about primaries serving Hampton. As far as I can tell, you only mentioned St Richards because you were aiming to contradict my statement that all the primaries are good/outstanding (meaning all the primaries serving the three areas the OP asked about). You got the required area wrong, and the Ofsted grade, so I don't know why you're so gleefully rubbing in my St Richard's error. 🙄

Richmond is on the Kingston Loop. I lived in Teddington for 20 years then moved to Richmond once the kids had finished school so I had better transport options for town. The loop line train leaves Waterloo and goes to either Kingston or Richmond stopping at all stops then comes back the opposite way. Then there are Shepperton trains that can run to Shepperton either via Richmond or Kingston. Then from Richmond we also have the fast trains that run from Windsor and Eton, and Reading. Twickenham gets those too. And a few other all stopping options. For my sins, I've always had a job where I need to be in town so me and the trains are v familiar with each other!

There is also talk of a fast train to Heathrow being built - this will come before Crossrail 2 is ever looked at again. Crossrail 2 was off the menu mainly because Richmond council pushed back on it as it would mean losing the district line at Richmond which was universally unpopular.

This morning, with no traffic, the drive to the school from Richmond is 19 mins but I cannot believe it would be 25 mins on a school day on the school bus unless they were leaving early.

If you really don't need to be in town at all, I would rent as near the school as you can because traffic around there is dreadful in the morning. But state primary schools are sought after and you'd also need to live close to one to get in. Teddington is good for that as there are lots of different good ones so you should be ok (though do think about secondary options too).

JustWingItLifeEyelinerEverything · 28/10/2023 08:39

@urbanesque
I responded to lolo. At the moment HHJS is the only Outstanding and may remain it or change to Good as Hampton Junior did within 1-2 weeks.
Apart from that as I mentioned and surely you know, Hampton Hill is small and the likelihood to find a suitable property is low as people are happily settled and Snellers etc make a lot of effort to encourage people of Hampton Hill to sell. It is more likely to find a house in larger Hampton, which is closer to the school and avoid over 1 mile walk to Hampton Hill.

I think you mean Bishop Wand here?

Crikeyalmighty · 28/10/2023 09:26

If you are fannying about£2k for the coach I'm not sure you can afford to be doing this anyway or renting in That area and I mean this kindly as I love that area. Teddington isn't remotely rural, nor Hampton Hill.

JustWingItLifeEyelinerEverything · 28/10/2023 10:07

@Meredusoleil yes, you are correct. My mistake. I also forgot to list Hampton High which is next to Hampton Boys

My DD is now at LEH. After we got the offer, we just bought a house with 5 min walk to the school.

TartBlueberry · 28/10/2023 17:38

@MumGPT how lovely! Must be great living so near to school

KJ2019 · 29/10/2023 00:23

Hampton Hill Juniors have just had ofsted so I would expect them to go down to Good rather than Outstanding

mrDoubt · 25/11/2023 21:13

Curious question - How is the area West Molesey to live in ? Any thoughts?

The liquidity of good houses to rent is very less in Teddinton / Hampton hill. So diversifying my search slightly. Coach time is 20 min from West molesey.

@mrDoubt , west Molesey is a more mixed area as it's not near a train station to London. I hope your ds got on ok this morning.

Anyone’s son do Hampton this morning? How did they find it?

mrDoubt · 25/11/2023 22:02

My son did the 11 plus this morning. He was not able to complete the reasoning paper. Left a few questions Otherwise he said it was ok. Def harder than few other indepedent schools. What about yours?

OP posts:
Summerma · 25/11/2023 22:03

Yes, my DS sat this morning. He said (and I heard a few kids say at collection) that one of the papers was harder than the others, won’t say much else as suspect there are reserve days. Relieved it’s done. Well done to your DS!

mrDoubt · 25/11/2023 22:04

Thanks @tennissquare . We have a car. But rental prices are crazy now. West molesey seemed affordable. I had not heard of this area till i saw the Hampton coach map :) . Thanks for your input.
