Commute to Hampton Boys ( If avoiding coach)

Hi Parents,
I would like to hear from parents whos DS is at Hamptons boys and do not use the coach. ( Thats an extra 2K). Any areas to live where the DS can take the public transport or Dad drives for 15 min ( occasions where Dad needs to drive for events and afer school sports). We got a few suggestions like

Teddington / Strawberry hill - These arears might not have a lot of life - might be more rural someone said.
Can DS commute from Kingston or Richmond using TFL. People said Kingston or richmond have a bit more life due to their town centres.

We will be relocating from Canary wharf. So its a big East to west move.

The commuter traffic between West Moseley and Hampton can be very bad because it's a through-route to and from the A316/M3. Hampton Court Bridge is a bottle-neck, so accidents can bring the road to a standstill. However, if he were to cycle, he may be able to cut through Bushy Park.

Thats very useful information. I did see it on the map ( bridge). At present for the first year , we dont plan to send him on cycle till we get familiar with the neighbourhood and traffic.

Thank you @urbanesque

If you do move to Hampton Hill, a good tip is to choose one of the roads that are exempt from the Burtons Rd traffic scheme, which was introduced to stop rat-running through residential streets. If you have an exemption you can avoid the rush-hour queues more easily: https://www.richmond.gov.uk/burtons_road_traffic_reduction_scheme

@urbanesque the exemption applies only to people who live in Burton Road. And if OP considers moving close and convenient I would simply move to Hampton or Hampton Hill. Walk to school

Not true @JustWingItLifeEyelinerEverything the exemption applies to several streets. The link I shared has all the information.

@mrDoubt my DD gets the LEH/Hampton coach from East Molesey. It’s a lovely area!

mrDoubt · 26/11/2023 15:57

Thank you @Bewler . Curious question. is the coach fees the same irrespective of distance ? Say one lives in Wimbledon or Kingston or Molesey ?
Their website has coach fees as standard . I believe it should be charged based on distance in theory. BUt always hard

@mrDoubt so sorry, I don’t know. We only ever saw the price from our stop! 😕

Sb123455 · 26/11/2023 17:05

Yeah same price wherever you come from. We’re just up from Hampton court bridge and pay the same as those coming from much further away!

mrDoubt · 26/11/2023 17:55

:( hmm DEF not fair pricing esp if you are at Hampton court. !

From Hampton Court Green there is a public bus to Hampton School - the 111. It would be free for your son. https://tfl.gov.uk/bus/route/111/

Whitton has a great high street, with independent cafes, butchers, bakers, greengrocers etc. Trains into London are good, though crowded. Houses are bigger over there, and a bit cheaper than Twickenham. You may get more flightpath noise, but that bothers some people more than others.

RedFluffyPanda · 28/02/2024 22:44

yes, Whitton is relatively OK

Hi All,

Need some urgent advice
We are not finding any good quality houses to rent in the Hampton / Hampton fill area. so looking at teddington and Sunbury

( 3 days I can work from home, so can drive, 2 days we will need to use public transport). DD will go to Hampton infants. so have 2 drops in the morning

  1. If i had options between Teddington and Sunbury ( lower Subnburyi guess), which would be a better choice for commute to school ( Boys and Infant nursery_
  2. I would also like to hear from Parents who live in Teddington and whose DS goes to Hampton boys, a) Drive b) bus c) Take the 8.15 train from Teddington to Hampton and walk

3)What are peoples take on living in Sunbury - I see we get more space for the same price. Driving is 10 min but public transport takes a long time

Thanks for your time.

Teddington is a much nicer area and much nearer/faster than Sunbury. Commute will be better.

I assume you have a secured place at Hampton Infants regardless of where you live - are they under subscribed.

Driving at rush hour is not 10 mins - more like 30 plus from Sunbury.

JustWingItLifeEyelinerEverything · 13/06/2024 08:29

Ideal would be to live anywhere on the line of 111 or R70 bus as these are stopping in front of the school. These busses are nowhere near Sunbury and Teddington.

111 is Hampton Court, and after it passes Hampton goes to Feltham and Hounslow

R70 goes from Richmond through Twickenham to Hampton where it does a loop

If I were you I would look at properties in Twickenham and Hampton Court/ Molsey close to to the bus station.

Teddington location is not convenient because he would need to go via R68 and then change to R70. The traffic is awful and the busses are packed. Travelling via train is not convenient as the Feltham and Hampton train station are far from Hampton Boys.

To Sunbury the trip is complicated:
Either train and again, train station is not close, or going for 15 min via Dean Road and path over the Longford river to Sainsbury's St Clares. There is a bus that goes there that goes to Sunbury. Alternatively do the trip as my son does to St Paul's school: 111 bus to the train station then change there for 216. That takes around 45 min. But on the contrary to the trip to Teddington there is no much traffic on the way.

You have to analyse where is the place you want to rent in terms of distance to the bus. If it is a longer walk in Sunbury or Teddington then there is no point because the route is complicated enough.

Potentially from Teddington he can go on the bike but with the amount of traffic, trust me it is not safe.

Consider options with the expensive bus run by the school if you can afford it. These are going from distances far away

No, commute from Teddington is not easy in the morning hours with all the traffic. There is no direct bus. He needs to take R68 and change to R70 that on the way back from school does a huge loop going towards Feltham ( Bear Road) and then returning back towards Hampton Hill

I have been living on the street parallel to Hanworth Road ( Hampton Boys) for almost the last 20 years

I drive through Hampton and then along the river to Sunbury- no much traffic 15 min. To Teddington is more challening despite it is closer. For years I took a bike via Bushy Park as I was fed up with traffic

Moominmammacat · 13/06/2024 08:46

Why do private schools have coaches and state schools buses?

JustWingItLifeEyelinerEverything · 13/06/2024 08:50

You wouldn't like the price of those coaches anyway. Few hundred£ per term.
They are bringing kids from distances far away e.g. Wimbledon

Moominmammacat · 13/06/2024 09:20

I know! Thousands a year. But buses travel long distances too (only for the masses though).

JustWingItLifeEyelinerEverything · 13/06/2024 09:37

Between me and you I secretly despise these school coaches. Every morning the create havoc on Hanworth Road as they stop next to each other and it is impossible to take over them because of the traffic from other side. All street is often block until they move. I think the plan was to make the bays for them in the wide pavement but the council doesn't seem to like the idea.
