Commute to Hampton Boys ( If avoiding coach)

mrDoubt · 26/10/2023 19:05

Hi Parents,
I would like to hear from parents whos DS is at Hamptons boys and do not use the coach. ( Thats an extra 2K). Any areas to live where the DS can take the public transport or Dad drives for 15 min ( occasions where Dad needs to drive for events and afer school sports). We got a few suggestions like

Teddington / Strawberry hill - These arears might not have a lot of life - might be more rural someone said.
Can DS commute from Kingston or Richmond using TFL. People said Kingston or richmond have a bit more life due to their town centres.

We will be relocating from Canary wharf. So its a big East to west move.

Thank you for all your messages.

In one of the properties, I am viewing, there is a direct 285 bus from Teddinton to Hampton Boys.
Do Buses have Bus lanes to cut through traffic ?

After reading, still pondering over the same query - if no good properties in Hampton, whats the next best. I dont mind staying far and my son taking the coach, but DD has to be dropped at Hampton infant. So Coach is ruled out for us

Yes, there is but check how long it goes in traffic hours. The closest stop is called Hanworth Road but is on Uxbridge Road. 15 min walk to the school but doable. 285 used to go through Hanworth Road but the buggers changed the route around 10 years ago.
Equally, the same bus is accessible from the other end via the Longford River bridge which I mentioned before. Similar distance, more busses there to choose from

Depends where. not on Hampton Hill High Street if you asking about R70/R68, and mostly not in Teddington. Almost zero on Uxbridge Road if you asking about 285

if not Hampton then Hampton HIll, Twickenham, Hampton Court or Molsey close to Hampton Court.

This is good for direct busses
If not then Teddington, Hampton Wick

There are places between Hampton and Sunbury like Kempton Park, Feltham

But if I were you I would take anything in Hampton and move to a better place when the place pops up. It is no point to spend too much time in traffic if you can easily move to another property as you are renting

mrDoubt · 13/06/2024 11:13

Thank you @JustWingItLifeEyelinerEverything

Yes but all letting agents want minumum 1 year let going to 2 years
agian, personally we would not want to move again in 1 year, but if neccesity dictates it, yes

Will loook at Twikenham again, def, the traffic on the motor way is fats moving than the inner roads

Look at Hanworth streets close to Hampton. Not any further. It is still relatively safe and very close to the Hampton Boys school.

Good luck!

FleetwoodMacAttack · 13/06/2024 17:37

OP has said nothing in Hampton or Hampton Hill to rent. They would be best (and closest to both schools) so little point suggesting those.

I still maintain from checking Google maps at 8am this morning, Sunbury looks tricky. Train is really not at option, issue with public bus is can he get on it/is it full? Hence school bus being preferred for many.

Meredusoleil · 13/06/2024 19:13

I think the 216 bus goes through both Lower Sunbury and Hampton Village. Which is fine to walk to Hampton Infants, but a bit of a walk to Hampton Boys. Not sure exactly where in Sunbury it stops, but think its near St. Ignacios School/Church maybe?

I would suggest moving to Lower Sunbury as opposed to Teddington as you will get more house for your money. Just be warned that traffic at Sunbury Cross roundabout can be awful during rush hour, so best to drive round along the river and up Percy Road instead imho.

mrDoubt · 13/06/2024 19:28

Thank you all
@Meredusoleil hi. I did not know there was a diff way from sunbury by avoiding the roundabout. Also depends on which part of sunbury i get the house. Everyone i spoke to hate the sunbury rush hour traffic jam !!
this year surpringly there is a shortage of good houses and steep rents ! Double whammy.
not sure if this is normal in the summer season.

poeple who like in teddington - is there any shortcuts ( walking , cycling via the park ) to save time. This is for the Ds. The dd will need to use thenbus / train if nothing is available. Also staying in hampton hill is marginally better ( 35 min walk to hampton infant or 20 min bus ride ). Relatively better but not a full game changer !

Still, Hampton Hill is much much closer to Hampton Infants than e.g. Sunbury. Also, from Hampton Hill your son can walk to Hampton Boys. There is a Carlisle Infant school where you can consider moving your child for convenience and it is a feeder to Hampton Hill Jrs. Both schools in Hampton Hill and Hampton are equally good

p.s. if you are catholic, there are other options too.

Hi

Did you mean St James Catholics School ?
What are peoples views on this school ?

Hampton Infant andNursery or St James Catholic school ? We might be finalising a house half way between these 2 schools. Any thoughts on these 2 schools ?

Hampton Infant school is a feeder to Hampton Juniors ( both are federation)
Carlisle Infant school is a feeder to Hampton Hill Juniors ( both are federation)

Either of them are OK. Hampton Infants is not better than Carlisle Infants and vice versa. Neither are the Junior schools.
How do I know? I know many many parents and my child attended one of them. All these schools were graded as Good and Junior schools were downgraded from Outstanding to Good.

St James Catholics School is an excellent school ...if you are a Catholic and can prove it. I know somebody who transferred her son there from private and interestingly she says that it is much much better.

Hampton Infants is now graded Outstanding.

Have you had a chance to look round both options - might help make your mind up as you tend to get a feeling for which ones right for your child.

JustWingItLifeEyelinerEverything · 25/06/2024 14:32

That must be new grading. However it feeds to the Junior school downgraded last year to Good. Unless she thinks about changing schools later

Meredusoleil · 25/06/2024 16:39

Hampton Infants has been rated outstanding for many years now. Unless they've had a recent Ofsted, the last visit was ages ago!

Hampton Juniors was not downgraded. They were rated good and then aiming for outstanding, but at the latest Ofsted got good with some outstanding features. So maintained the good rating.

Carlisle was rated good last I had heard. But Hampton Hill Juniors was rated outstanding. They may have been downgraded to good since though.

redrobin75 · 25/06/2024 16:47

Hampton Hill Junior School was graded Good in Oct 2023.

@mrDoubt , good luck with the house search and primary school search and for your ds at Hampton School in Sept.

lolo99 · 25/06/2024 17:01

I wouldn't get hung up on Ofsted grades, go and get a feel for the school. Most teachers know Ofsted do not really give an honest picture of any school. It's an outdated and inaccurate system. It won't mean your child is happier/ better taught in an Ofsted grade outstanding vs a Good.

urbanesque · 25/06/2024 17:23

Ofsted has had a new framework since Sept 2019 that is very different to the previous framework, so it's better to describe schools as "regraded" rather than "downgraded" or "upgraded". Schools haven't necessarily changed - the inspection system has.

JustWingItLifeEyelinerEverything · 25/06/2024 17:47

@Meredusoleil Hampton Juniors was Satisfactory in 2010 since then there were Good and are Good now. Hampton Hill Juniors were Outstanding and now downgraded to Good. The head, deputy head is leaving and head of pastoral already left. Nobody knows what will happen to the school with such changes.

I am very sceptical about teachers opinions because every cook praises his own broth.

So you just thought you'd spread the news to flag the uncertainty, and make prospective parents anxious? That probably says more about you than the school.

it is not attitude. It is common sense. Anybody who works for any organisation sticks to its value but if only something goes wrong and they are departing.... they say a completely different story.

not sure what you are talking about. The Ofsted report and Parent satisfaction surveys are official and available online
The school newsletters are available online, the governor's letters are sent to all parents. Please do not create conspiracy theories where all is transparent

and btw I said that Hampton Infant and Juniors and Hampton Hill and Carlisle all have been good schools for years. I cannot speak about the future- I don't know it

JustWingItLifeEyelinerEverything · 13/06/2024 08:50

You wouldn't like the price of those coaches anyway. Few hundred£ per term.
They are bringing kids from distances far away e.g. Wimbledon

2000 per year
