2022 GCSE Re-marks

Just a thread to discuss any 2022 GCSE re-mark successes (or not).

We will be requesting a remark for one RE paper (ethics). DS is marks away from a grade 7. DS received a high 8 for Re paper 1, grade 6 for paper 2 and a grade 4 for paper 3 (the one we are requesting a remark for).

Will also probably request a remark for English Language but won't know until we see the papers. DS is three marks away from a 7 on this.

I will update on the outcome of these when we hear back.

Good luck to everyone requesting re-marks. 🤞🤞🤞

We have just had one back that has gone up 10 marks, across two papers, and up a grade. Nearly didn’t have it remarked because she was 4 marks from grade boundary, which felt too far away. But teacher thought it was under-marked and was obviously right!

dandlmum, can I ask what subject and board this was? Waiting to hear back from review of DS's Paper 2 English Language which is AQA. Debating whether to have Paper 1 remarked too. DS needs 3 marks to achieve a 7 and is 8 marks away from the grade boundary below. Tricky.

It was AQA Geography. We had two of the 3 papers remarked. I know what you mean re boundary below. There was another subject where dd really seemed to have underperformed and we would have liked to ask for a remark. But only 7 marks above the boundary below for that one and felt
too risky, so just left it. . Hope yours turns out well- generally one paper at a time seems the least risky way to do it.

There are some real corkers on here. It makes you wonder who else has an unmarked paper, but because parents haven’t requested scripts back or fine for re-mark it’s gone unitised and the grade incorrect.

We know of someone who went up 16 marks on one paper which involved 8 different questions being regarded as they were all within the wrong marking band - sometimes out by 2 marking bands. It does make you lose some faith in the whole system.

Agree @WombatChocolate - that story of @NBP's is appalling.

How many of us would have said, well, never mind, lots of 9s and one 7 is fine (it is of course - but very much not in this case)? It makes you really wonder.

It is the case that there was a real shortage of markers this year - I saw an appeal from (I think) AQA for English GCSE markers in about April which was shocking. Maybe if they paid more they might get people wanting to do it eh.

Well done to your DD @NBP on her even better results!

Aworldofmyown · 26/09/2022 18:56

Has anyone had a remarkable for Combined Science? DS was predicted alot higher and was really surprised t get 4-4 on the higher paper. Its a confusing subject to break down on the boundaries though 😕
We had Eng Lang remarked and entered up a grade.

Manyoaks · 26/09/2022 19:00

I am so shocked there are so many errors on the marking. I wonder just how many more go unnoticed without proactive teachers or parents

Notcontent · 27/09/2022 01:28

We requested a review of DD’s AQA English Literature papers. We were unsure whether to go for it (had no guidance from the school) but the breakdown of the marks seemed to show some quite inconsistent results and DD had expected to do better - well, we just heard back and she gained 14 marks! Out of that, a full 8 marks on just one 30 mark essay. Very odd and concerning. I can only assume that either the original marker was sloppy or maybe DD made valid
points that didn’t quite fit within the marking scheme and was therefore awarded no marks for them by the original marker.

Can you help - ds got 6 in media - one mark off 7,

school day it’s £36 per paper for remark (or similar) so it’s be £75 approx. Is there a checking step before this which is free as they’ve not offered it? Only offered the paid revirw

he doesn’t need the 7 but would like it

not sure if it’s worth £75

One mark off then I would definitely try. 🤞

I think deadline for requesting reviews is tomorrow so that's probably your only option now. It is awful that so many extra marks have been found for people that have means to pay for reviews.

I don’t think the marks are being “found” but rather that some papers have clearly been incorrectly marked. And that’s not good. But there should be some other system in place so that cost is not a barrier.

Slowlydoesit · 27/09/2022 08:41

Think the deadline for requesting reviews across all boards is 29th September (Thursday)?

Notcontent that is what I meant.

Sorry yes deadline is Thursday. It's been a long week already.

fitflop · 27/09/2022 17:13

We requested both AQA English language papers back as DD got a 4 instead of predicted 6.

The last question on paper 2 she was only given 10 marks so asked for a review.

It came back with an extra 10 marks just on this last question so moved her up to a grade 5.

The question is whether to she should re-sit to try to get her 6?
Im still concerned that the papers were marked by someone who was inexperienced and that in the review even if they felt she could have been given extra marks it was still within the threshold and not deemed unreasonable.

Not sure what to advise my DD.
Getting a 6 doesn’t impact her current 6th sixth but I’m thinking if she decides to go to Uni a 6 would be better…..

Learneratlife · 27/09/2022 17:14

So DDs school has requested a review of moderation for the GCSE Design and Technology coursework element. The marks were moderated down by 6% which meant that lots of students missed their target/expected grades.

Any teachers on here who can indicate whether the school is likely to be successful. I think it is costing the school quite a lot of money to do, which I believe they will get back if the grades go up.

Thank you.

I believe that a 5 is fine for Uni. I probably wouldn't bother with a re-sit.

MrsHamlet · 27/09/2022 17:25

@Learneratlife I've been a moderator. In my experience, if I was reducing marks to that extent I would have already run it up the line and had it approved.
That's not to say that it can't and shouldn't be challenged but whole centre adjustments are generally not the work of just one person.

Thank you Mrs Hamlet. It is a state school, so quite a chunk of money to lose if they aren't successful. 🤞🤞

Mykittensaremyfriends · 27/09/2022 20:32

@Learneratlife can I ask which exam board?

If a cohort has been marked down on moderation it generally has already been checked and checked again. Usually it indictaes that a teacher hasn't applied an AO correctly

@Learneratlife can I ask which exam board?

It's AQA Mykittensaremyfriends.Think that the school has taken some time to decide whether to appeal given cost implications. It's a state school and not the sort to inflate grades.

Learneratlife · 27/09/2022 20:44

SeasonFinale, that's interesting. Wonder why they are appealing? It's an Ofsted Outstanding school and I would be surprised if it didn't adhere to marking requirements.

Or that they have interpreted the task incorrectly, or that there has been plagiarism identified.

@Learneratlife thanks. Similarly marked down on coursework but different exam board

It's the whole cohort though rather than an individual. Being marked down for misinterpretation or plagiarism would be why an individual would be marked down.

Those things can also apply at cohort level though.
