2022 GCSE Re-marks

Slowlydoesit · 09/09/2022 08:33

Just a thread to discuss any 2022 GCSE re-mark successes (or not).

We will be requesting a remark for one RE paper (ethics). DS is marks away from a grade 7. DS received a high 8 for Re paper 1, grade 6 for paper 2 and a grade 4 for paper 3 (the one we are requesting a remark for).

Will also probably request a remark for English Language but won't know until we see the papers. DS is three marks away from a 7 on this.

I will update on the outcome of these when we hear back.

Good luck to everyone requesting re-marks. 🤞🤞🤞

AQA are taking a long time, the school put in for my DS's paper 1 for both English Lit and Language. I suspect from the thread on GCSE results there may have been a large number of applications for reviews for these two subjects with AQA.

DFOD · 21/09/2022 14:49

My DD review is for AQA physics - and Edexcel Drama - has anyone any idea / experience of timelines for these boards / subjects?

dandlmum · 21/09/2022 15:35

AQA seem to be taking about 2 weeks. We got one back yesterday which was sent in on the 6th (mark stayed the same). Someone higher up said 2 weeks for their AQA one as well.

Thanks that’s good to know and to manage expectations.

mushroom3 · 21/09/2022 17:13

@dandlmum what subject was that for please?

DFOD · 21/09/2022 17:49

Wow just got the Edexcel drama back within 24hrs. Stayed the same. Which is a relief as was right in the middle of the grade boundary - so risked it going down.

Waiting on AQA physics.

AQA English Language papers reviewed, sent Aug 31 and received back Sept 19. My son got an 8, was 2 marks off a 9. He gained 3 marks on the review in paper 1, none on paper 2, so went up to a 9.

That’s great news - congratulations.

My DD is after 1 mark (0.5%) to nudge up a grade in physics.

If it’s not there it’s no biggie.

AQA physics we sent 6 Sept and got the response on 15 September - 1 marks of the next grade however both papers stayed exactly the same mark, so no change.

Ahh thanks for that info.

I also think that STEM subjects are probably easier to mark and their is less subjectivity.

Just going through the motions - leaving no stone unturned.

AQA English Lang and Lit paper 1s reviewed. English Lit stayed the same but English Language went up 12 marks!
Moved up from an 8 (1 mark off a 9) to a solid 9. DS is delighted.

SingingGoldfinch · 23/09/2022 08:26

@mushroom3 - 12 marks! That's a huge increase! Thank goodness you went for a review! When did you send yours off? We're waiting on an AQA English Lit review - sent off on 12th Sept.

mushroom3 · 23/09/2022 12:16

@SingingGoldfinch I'm sorry, I don't know when the review was requested as the school decided to do it. There was on the initial marking, a large discrepancy between the marks of paper 1 and 2.

With English Lit, the school requested and paid for the review of paper 1 (which didn't go up). Is it worth getting a review of a paper ( paper 2) which scored a 9 already, can marks go up within a 9 or would any mark within a 9 be seen as within tolerance level as they are in the same grade?

MrsHamlet · 23/09/2022 17:40

Its about reasonable or unreasonable marks. I'd suggest someone looks at it before asking for it to be reviewed.

mushroom3 · 23/09/2022 17:44

Thanks @MrsHamlet

MrsHamlet · 23/09/2022 17:48

No problems @mushroom3 - no point in paying if it doesn't look like it'll move

WombatChocolate · 23/09/2022 17:48

Yes, marks can go up within a L9.

Each Q within a mark paper has BANDS of marking - not to be confused with the overall grades. A 16 mark essay for example might have 5 bands, with the top band being 13-16 marks. If an answer is found to be within the wrong band, the mark can change. This could result in a mark change within any final Level for the whole paper including L9.

If an answer is found to be within the correct band, but even if the reviewer considers it has been marked at the bottom of the band, when they would have placed it at the top of the band, it won’t change - it is within tolerance.

For A Level essay subjects, bands can be quite wide on essays worth lots of marks. Tolerance is therefore broader.

Got my son's Spanish writing back today (aqa) and he's gone up a grade. Was only one mark off but not yet been told how much it went up by. He's delighted.

That looks like the paper was blank. Even if she answered the "wrong" question there should have been a mark for what she did.

Have you seen the paper?

NBP · 23/09/2022 20:40

Not yet. We have asked for service 2 review of marking plus the script

This happened to friend's child when the exam board lost the paper (paper 3). They were given zero for the paper, even though the school could prove it was sent. Luckily they word process their answers and the file that was deleted after it was sent could be retrieved by the school and re-sent.

I reckon the exam board has lost your DD's paper.

diian · 23/09/2022 20:48

This was AQA English Lit too.
