Does anyone know what happens if students are late to an exam due to unexpected traffic issues. DS1 got school bus this morning at usual time but M6 was completely closed as a lorry overturned and his bus route is on the diversion from the motorway so he was delayed by an hour. I informed the school who said there were a few of them stuck and they would hold the start as long as possible which I think was up to 9:30. According to Life 360 his bus arrived at 9:31 so they won't have made it to the exam hall by 9:30 so I think the latecomers may have been put in a separate room but not sure how the exam board will take account of this. Annoyingly DS2 got a different bus (there are 3 from near us) and his arrived at school at 9:20.

I did think of jumping in the car to get him there quicker by taking a different route but I don't think it would have worked as I would just have been stuck in the same traffic but much further behind so not much help really.

LouisCatorze · 17/06/2022 10:25

Isn't it up to half an hour late they're allowed in to sit exams, after that the 'window of opportunity' has passed. BUT I would imagine that would count as extenuating circumstances @Mumski45 and your DS will probably be assessed on the other papers (assuming he sat them) only.

Sure the EO will have a plan. Presumably he wasn't the only one to be late?

LouisCatorze · 17/06/2022 10:27

I take back my comment and am now feeling really mean. Sorry Chris Packham's step-daughter if you read this. I'm feeling Blush

TeenPlusCat · 17/06/2022 10:28

I think that exams have to start within 1 hour of the published exam board time (because pupils aren't allowed to leave before an hour).

So I would hope that they would be able to start any time up to 10am.

My DD's resits don't even officially start until 9:30 at college (which has a normal start lesson time of 9:45 due to long distances students cover - agricultural college).

LouisCatorze · 17/06/2022 10:30

AQA info that might give some answers.

LouisCatorze · 17/06/2022 10:31

It looks as if they should be fine to sit it IF none of those already in school and sitting it from the correct start time haven't got up and left (otherwise presumably room for exchange of exam paper info and potential for cheating).

Allotment123 · 17/06/2022 11:20

My daughter said Spanish was good and she wrote loads but she said she also answered 1 question. Given the are 2x16 markers and then a 32 marker, I can't understand what she is thinking. Because she had anxiety and doesn't want high expectations does she deliberately self sabatage or is she mis remembering, or is she just winding me up. Given she has actually managed to sit this exam I should just count my blessings... Anyone else have this issue?

DFOD · 17/06/2022 11:34

Feedback from Spanish “good” here as well especially as she wanted to drop it before the mocks as it’s a struggle for her. Proud of her for pushing through on it. She’s off out with her mates now for the rest of the day and evening - hope she lets her hair down and has some fun - just chemistry on Mon and Physics on Thursday and we are doooooonnnnnnnneeeeeee

Mumski45 · 17/06/2022 11:39

Thanks you your replies. School have now confirmed that as he was less than an hour late he got the full time and no reporting to exam board is necessary. Such a relief, I just hope he wasn't too stressed to concentrate.

LouisCatorze · 17/06/2022 11:40

@Mumski45 that's such a relief but horrible to be delayed like that. So much extra and not-needed stress.

QueenMabby · 17/06/2022 11:53

Also loving the pet photos.

DS said the Spanish translation was "shit" but the rest ok. But then he said he would probably only get half marks on the translation bit which considering (a) it's his worst subject and (b) the grade boundaries, it may mean it wasn't as bad as he thought.

We're just relieved it's over.

@Rollergirl11 - hope you're doing ok after the accident.

Silkierabbit · 17/06/2022 12:20

Love all the pet photos. Dd has no exams today but 5 next week then its over. She goes in with bus so hopefully ok next week but we will see.

I think dd said it depends what time school starts exam how late can be and get full time 9am she said its up to 10am, 9.30am and 10am also up to 10am though best not to test these. And not 100% that is right.

zighead · 17/06/2022 12:37

Gosh it must be so stressful not getting to an exam in time. Glad they were allowed the full time to sit it.
DS thought Spanish was good but it’s his least favourite subject so he is not really bothered tbf. Only four to go…yaaaay!!!
Have a good weekend all 😊

AgeingDoc · 17/06/2022 13:00

@Mumski45 try not to worry.
My DS, and a fair few of the rest of his cohort were late for chemistry paper 1 because, slightly ironically, a chemical tanker over turned just ahead of their bus. They had to take a diversion down tiny country lanes and were late. I don't know what time they got there, but on arrival, school gave them all a drink and something to eat so that they had chance to compose themselves before they started. It must have been more than 30 mins after the start of the exam but the others were still in so no chance of cheating and they were all segregated. They started late and were allowed the full time. I'm sure it will be the same for your DC - its an easily verifiable and out of your control reason for the lateness.
We had a bit of drama yesterday too actually. Virtually the whole town blacked out by a power cut but fortunately the school has a back up generator.

MrsPnut · 17/06/2022 13:10

DD's school don't start any of the exams until half past anyway but they are expected to be in the exam hall for quarter past. It is a very rural school with about 90% of the kids coming in by bus, 7 miles cross country for us but kids come from a lot further away than that. We've been driving DD in for morning exams just to avoid the panic that you are going to be late.

AgeingDoc · 17/06/2022 13:10

Sorry, hadn't read the update before posting - glad all is ok.

Dixiechickonhols · 17/06/2022 13:50

That’s good he got full time I bet they were panicking.

Dixiechickonhols · 17/06/2022 13:53

DD was happy with Spanish writing the questions seemed fair from what she mentioned one about town v country. 3 to go but 2 are her least favourite.

salsamummy · 17/06/2022 14:02

Have been absent which has taken my mind off this.

Training was great in London. Heard from DS last Thursday when I was in a hotel and very little communication since. "No News is Good News"
My friend's son at Bryanston and she said they had finished their exams. Just two more for DS then he has Duke of Edinburgh and a few fun things the week after like Thorpe Park. We pick on speech day 2nd July.

Mumski45 · 17/06/2022 14:56

👋@Dixiechickonhols hope your DD is doing OK. Seems like only yesterday when they were starting off in year 7.

They can go in up to 10am. I’m an EO and it happens often.

Rollergirl11 · 17/06/2022 16:17

Thanks everyone for well wishes ref the accident. I was pretty shaken yesterday not gonna lie. The moment after he came off his bike my heart was in my throat imagining the worst! Thankfully it was just scratches. And my Mum has kindly offered me the loan of her car until ours is fixed given the hire/courtesy car shortage. So it could be worse!

DD said Spanish was okay this morning. Could have gone better but not the worst were her words. She was dog tired this morning as she had a bad nights sleep. She’s currently zonked out sunbathing in the garden. Harry Styles tix are a go and DH even has one more so she can take a friend! So think it’s fair to say that there will be no revision done now until Sunday. But that’s fine as only Chemistry on Monday and Physics on Thursday left to go…

MirandaWest · 17/06/2022 16:32

DD went into town with friends after Spanish. One of them is happy to have clothes and bags left at her house so DD left with a change of clothes, sun cream, insect repellant and whatever else a 16 year old girl needs.

Am presuming Spanish was fine - hopefully it was.

Chemistry, History and Physics to go now.

I know (11 plus seems a v long time ago!) Yes she’s good thank you. Can’t fault her revision/organisation I’ve had it very easy. She’s going to the school sixth form. Hope yours are well.

MrsScrubbingbrush · 17/06/2022 17:02

Glad you got a car sorted out @Rollergirl11 especially with the upcoming rail strikes.

Luckily both DDs walk to school (about a 40 minute walk)

Last minute push here with DD2 going through Chemistry with a tutor friend & DD1 going into school for a Latin revision lesson. Turned out it was just her & a friend!

Not much revision tomorrow as DD1 has a Guides family day (she's a Young Leader) & DD2 is having her booster jab followed by a little retail therapy.
