Hi, my DS is in year 5 and we're struggling with not being able to see schools in person. We're having a think about where to apply and at the moment KCL is a favourite geographically but we haven't seen it so don't have a feel for the vibe. We went to see Hampton and KGS before the first lockdown without DS and liked them both. The Emanuel tours booked so quickly when they were released a few weeks ago, I think they are releasing more slots soon. Just wondering if anyone can give us a feeling of the vibe of these schools. Does anyone know what is happening with the headteacher at Kings? They seem to have an acting head at the moment.

Hi! Yes, we got the email this afternoon confirming that it is still going ahead, in person. Perhaps check your junk mail? It came from Karen Saul.

Thisonesfortheroad · 11/01/2022 17:46

Just wondering how your DS’s felt the interviews at Hampton went? Mine said he was sat in a room where another interview was being held in earshot? He found that a little disconcerting!

Mumchumof2 · 11/01/2022 18:42

DS gave the standard “good”... we get the same response for anything and everything 😆. They did go off in pairs and swapped interviewers, will ask about whether he was distracted 🤷‍♀️ We were surprised that we didn’t get any of those unusual Q’s... like if you had one superpower, or asked about favourite authors/books 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Thisonesfortheroad · 11/01/2022 18:57

Oh! You guys are savvier than we - I didn’t realise that superpower questions were a thing till DS got asked that at one of the others and was a bit thrown! When I asked him what he said in reply he told me: I said I’d want invisibility so that I could hideaway when I’m shy and don’t want to answer anymore questions 🙈

Mumchumof2 · 11/01/2022 19:45

@Thisonesfortheroad 😆😆😆😆 LOVE that!! We also had no clue, DS is our eldest child and first time going through this so very much learning on the job, DS had another interview just before Xmas and was asked that same Q.... DS said he would have stretchy arms to reach things, and then added to help people too- like his parents when they ask for help getting shopping out the car but he wants to carry on playing football in the garden! Lmao! they were probably at the same school 💙

Gettingcloser21 · 11/01/2022 20:54

Is anyone’s DS doing the St Paul’s interviews or know how many called back vs offers?

Or the Hampton co-curricular scholarship assessments?

13milebeach · 12/01/2022 13:34

DS said that he got a short comprehension where DS couldn't understand why the mother in the comprehension gave her son a 'puffin' to eat - he kept thinking the author must have got it wrong and must have meant to write muffin instead!!! (we now recognise the book and author and, strange though it seems, it was a puffin)

Sweetnhappy1 · 12/01/2022 17:24

@Thisonesfortheroad love that answer!

How's everyone getting on? We're waiting to hear from KGS on Friday and King's on Monday re: interviews.

Thisonesfortheroad · 12/01/2022 17:40

@Mumchumof2 Yes, this was before Xmas and I think his first one… honestly, I can look back with humour on it now, but at the time I had to take a moment.

@Gettingcloser21 afraid we didn’t apply for those. Hope you get the news you want.

Gettingcloser21 · 12/01/2022 17:55

Thank you @Thisonesfortheroad. DS has his scholarship assessment at Hampton next week and he’s been asked back for interview at SPS but we are waiting for the confirmed date.

Hope you all get good news re interviews/assessments in the coming days.

11Plus2022 · 13/01/2022 07:29

Also love that answer @thisonesfortheroad.

It’s been a long wait for KCS, nearly over though. We’re also waiting to hear on an interview for one other, and DS has a scholarship assessment next week. He’ll be very, very glad when the written papers are finally over.

Oldmonk · 15/01/2022 08:20

KGS results for written exam came through yesterday for interviews next week.

Now awaiting KCS. Really long wait.

Sweetnhappy1 · 15/01/2022 09:51

@Oldmonk we're in the same situation as you. We received the KGS interview invitation yesterday and biting my nails waiting for KCS on Monday. After that, we're done. Good luck everyone!

Mumchumof2 · 15/01/2022 10:25

@Oldmonk @Sweetnhappy1 DS invite for interview came through last night too! One last week and some very much deserved chill time! What a few months! Goodluck to your DS’s 🤞

Avidgardner · 15/01/2022 10:34

Hi all - may I join the thread please? DS was fortunate enough to be called back for SPS 13+ and KGS academic scholarship interviews coming up next week. At a bit of a loss on what (if anything) we should be doing ahead of these as he is pretty fed up and tired of the process at this point!

LadyGAgain · 15/01/2022 10:45

I know nothing about KCS but the new head has a fantastic reputation at her current school. It's excellent and whilst she was expected to stay longer, the opportunity to lead KCS was too good to pass up. She brings a modern outlook and perspective. There's been some "issues" at KCS and her focus on pastoral care and creating "whole" people not just academic robots is refreshing and something to be welcomed. (And no I'm not her!!)

LadyGAgain · 15/01/2022 10:45

Good luck to all your children in their exams and results.

Pyrfwondering · 15/01/2022 10:53

@Avidgardner for interview prep, encourage reading, be aware of what's happening in the world and for your DS to think about what he would do if he was PM or President or in a decision-making role (pros & cons). Sometimes scholarship interviews go for quite abstract questions... like how to describe colours to a blind person.

Hope you all get some relaxation this weekend... easy to say, tough to do in Waiting Season. Good luck, everyone!

Can I ask How your son find the difficulty for the English and VR paper?
Sweetnhappy1 · 17/01/2022 12:37

He said the maths and VR were ok but the English was really hard and feels that he may have messed it up.

Sweetnhappy1 · 17/01/2022 12:37

What about yours?
