Hi, my DS is in year 5 and we're struggling with not being able to see schools in person. We're having a think about where to apply and at the moment KCL is a favourite geographically but we haven't seen it so don't have a feel for the vibe. We went to see Hampton and KGS before the first lockdown without DS and liked them both. The Emanuel tours booked so quickly when they were released a few weeks ago, I think they are releasing more slots soon. Just wondering if anyone can give us a feeling of the vibe of these schools. Does anyone know what is happening with the headteacher at Kings? They seem to have an acting head at the moment.

@Sweetnhappy1

He said the maths and VR were ok but the English was really hard and feels that he may have messed it up.
Exactly the same :)) my son found the English is quite hard , math and vr are easy though.

KCS newsletter to parents end of last term said there were 577 boys registered for about 60 places at 11+. Usually they interview around 120 and make around 90-100 offers. Most of these boys have multiple offers across state and private schools. Good luck everyone!

Sashamia · 17/01/2022 13:16

Should have read "interview around 140" not 120. Heard from Head of Lower School at an admission event.

Just got the email, DS not through to interview stage for KCS

11Plus2022 · 17/01/2022 14:28

Really sorry to hear that @Sweetnhappy1. We have also now received an email - DS has been invited to interview. Really proud of him.

Sweetnhappy1 · 17/01/2022 14:39

@11Plus2022 huge congratulations to your DS and best of luck to him for the interview

Thisonesfortheroad · 17/01/2022 17:54

We got a no too Sad.

Can’t believe it was under 600 applicants, felt like every man and his dog on the Friday!

Thisonesfortheroad · 17/01/2022 17:55

Well done to your boy @11Plus2022!

Gettingcloser21 · 17/01/2022 17:55

We got a no too. Seems it was a tough one.

Gettingcloser21 · 17/01/2022 17:56

Congratulations @11Plus2022.

Your DS must have performed very well on the day.

Gettingcloser21 · 17/01/2022 18:15

@Sweetnhappy1, we had similar feedback. DS did the Saturday morning session. He felt confident with the Maths and VR but didn’t quite understand the English text and found it very hard.

travelturtle · 17/01/2022 18:31

Hi everyone. I’ve been following this thread for a while but this is my first post. I wondered if anyone had heard from Latymer Upper yet? They said they’d notify about interviews before 21 Feb but not sure if that means any time this week?

travelturtle · 17/01/2022 18:32

That should of course say 21 Jan!!! It’s been a long month…

Gettingcloser21 · 17/01/2022 18:34

Hi @travelturtle. No, nothing from Latymer yet. I assumed it would be Friday tbh.

Sweetnhappy1 · 17/01/2022 18:44

I do think DS had a bad day. If people are looking back in future years, his average CAT was 136. Just goes to show, CAT doesn't really matter, it's performance on the day. Fingers crossed for the other choices.

Gettingcloser21 · 17/01/2022 19:18

Same, @Sweetnhappy1. CAT of 137, secured a Hampton 10+, made it to St Paul’s interview stage but no interview at KCS. Oh well, it wasn’t meant to be.

Fingers crossed for a successful outcome with other schools for your DS.

Mominafix · 17/01/2022 19:28

Hi I think the Cat scores can only give an idea of the child’s aptitude but like you said how they do on that particular day is hard to say.

That said I am sure your DS will find a school for for him.

My DS cleared the written for Kings but let’s see how the interview goes.

@11Plus2022 congratulations for your boys achievement. If you don’t mind me asking, which school are you more inclined towards Hampton/ kings and why?

Thanks

11Plus2022 · 17/01/2022 20:53

Wow, it does sound like the KCS process was very tough, and it came down to just which of all the very able boys who sat the exam performed better on the day - I feel very fortunate that DS was one of them.

@Mominafix, we actually didn’t apply to Hamptons as for us it’s not logistically feasible. If he is lucky enough to get an offer, our choice will be between KCS and RGS Guildford. RGS is the easier commute by some margin, but we really liked KCS and thought it would suit DS, so we’d have a difficult decision to make. I’m deliberately not thinking about it until the 11th though, when we’ll know whether he has the offer or not.

11Plus2022 · 17/01/2022 20:54

And congratulations to your DS too @Mominafix.

@Gettingcloser21 Wow, your son did incredibly well to get the Hampton 10+ offer and At Paul's interview, that makes the KCS outcome seem even stranger. As you say, if it isn't meant to be it isn't meant to be, their loss really. We have our last interview on Saturday then we're all done until the outcome on Feb 11th.

Good luck everyone, it's all nearly over!

11Plus2022 · 19/01/2022 08:46

@Sweetnhappy1, the KCS process does seem to have produced some anomalies. The very able top maths student at DS’s prep school also didn’t get through to interview, though like @Gettingcloser21’s DS is through to interview stage at St Pauls. I think a lot of weight must have been placed on the English paper.

We loved Hamptons too though. Two family friends both rejected KCS offers in favour of other schools a few years ago - one for Hamptons and one for St Pauls. They are both currently thriving in their first year at Oxford.

musicathome76 · 19/01/2022 09:15

Third time (and thankfully last time!) going through 11+ with my DC.
I have one at Wilson’s and one at RGS, Guildford. Third son going through with pre-ISEB test and grammar school assessments.
We have used atom to prep and coming from state primary school. Hope this will be OK and get some offers.

Gettingcloser21 · 19/01/2022 19:26

@Sweetnhappy1 did your DS not sit Latymer? Good luck for Saturday’s interview.
