Hi, my DS is in year 5 and we're struggling with not being able to see schools in person. We're having a think about where to apply and at the moment KCL is a favourite geographically but we haven't seen it so don't have a feel for the vibe. We went to see Hampton and KGS before the first lockdown without DS and liked them both. The Emanuel tours booked so quickly when they were released a few weeks ago, I think they are releasing more slots soon. Just wondering if anyone can give us a feeling of the vibe of these schools. Does anyone know what is happening with the headteacher at Kings? They seem to have an acting head at the moment.

DS didn’t sit Hampton. We really liked it, but logistically it just doesn’t work from where we live.

It does seem odd not to be required to show workings out for maths. My DS can be careless; showing his workings at least means credit may be given for method!

DS sits KCS on Friday, which is the last this year. He is really looking forward to the break before the final revision for the last, early January exam.

Any equivalent (in terms of difficulty) of the Hampton math paper I can find? How is it compared to the sample paper of Merchant Taylor Norwood and City of London Girls, both I found quite difficult?

cricketjoys85 · 30/11/2021 15:07

@WCC1985 , years ago we used Manchester grammar papers from their website. The Hampton paper has the last few questions for the maths scholar contenders.

WCC1985 · 30/11/2021 15:28

Thanks. I just looked at the Manchester Grammar 2019 sample math paper. Many questions are real difficult and it is not really not easy to complete all the questions unless you are very familiar with the question type. Wonder how one can tackle without extensive tutoring. What marks would you think would be needed on such papers to get pass Hampton?

cricketjoys85 · 30/11/2021 16:00

@, I used the Manchester grammar papers as a type of example to show my ds just before he took his entrance exams. For day to day revision use the normal exam books/papers. Many of the ds at Hampton 11plus come from the state sector and have normal preparation at home to help them with exam timing etc but they are naturally bright all rounders and could succeed in the different type of exams. Many in my ds's class had offers from Tiffin, KCS, KGS, RGS etc so could adapt their skills to each school's paper and not get overwhelmed. Some of these boys got maths scholarships so a near perfect score in the exam.

Did any else’s DS sit KCS yesterday or today? How did they find it?

Sunshine6363 · 04/12/2021 18:28

My son did it and said he found the VR and English quite difficult!

11Plus2022 · 04/12/2021 18:38

My DS thought the maths was hardest. And he’s normally pretty strong at maths . Oh well. DS reckoned that there were about 200 in his hall, and that was only surnames in one half on the alphabet. If that was the same for all sittings about 1200 boys sat the tests for 11+ and 13+. Makes the odds of even getting through to interview not great!

Gettingcloser21 · 04/12/2021 19:17

My DS sat it today. He said the Maths was good and VR was okay. He thought the English was pretty difficult. I’ve heard very mixed views about the paper today. Seems it really depends on the child. Some found Maths tough, others found English tough.

suchnonsense · 04/12/2021 19:20

Did anyone's son sit Whitgift 11+ today? I've had very little feedback from DS other than "it was fine"!

11Plus2022 · 06/12/2021 18:29

Interestingly, it appears KCS set different papers for the Friday and Saturday sessions. DS discovered at school today that those who wrote on Saturday had different papers to him, in English and Maths at least.

Gettingcloser21 · 06/12/2021 19:08

That’s not surprising. I would expect the papers to be different, to ensure there was no leak of information between Friday and Saturday. Did your son sit his on Friday or Saturday?

HermioneHere · 06/12/2021 19:50

Did anyone do Emanuel 10 or 11+?

Any feedback on that exam or numbers sitting this year for both?

11Plus2022 · 06/12/2021 20:17

@Gettingcloser21, he sat on Friday. It was a long afternoon (they finished at 6:30pm) which I think was pretty tough on the boys.

DS has some private school 11+ exams coming up in January, we've been going since the grammar school tests in September. Definitely a marathon not a sprint and so difficult to keep the motivation, for both me and him. Also because I'm not sure what more we can do.
Any suggestions for good stretch books/papers to use for English and maths. ?

Pyrfwondering · 12/12/2021 10:07

@user5756757987, give Walsh books a try, if you haven't tried them. Bond 11+ Stretch books were pretty good too. Good luck!

Mumchumof2 · 12/12/2021 10:47

@user5756757987 we are in the same position. It’s quite a long period of time to keep up the momentum so we are having a little break, I think DS needs a break to reset- by now there isn’t much else to learn, it should all be in there somewhere 🤞. DS has worked hard and I think they are owed a Christmas... will go over the material we have in the new year. Until then keep up the reading 🤗

11plusoveryet · 12/12/2021 13:55

@Mumchumof2 that’s exactly what we are doing. We are giving DS a well deserved break before he sits Latymer in Jan. We’ve encouraged reading until then too.

user5756757987 · 12/12/2021 21:06

Thanks for the recommendation @Pyrfwondering

@11plusoveryet and @Mumchumof2 - yes, I also feel like all the material has been covered and not much more to be done. Good to know others are also taking it easy, it's impossible to keep up the momentum for that long. I'm planning for DS to do 1 maths question a day (but even that feels ambitious right now) until end of term.

Gettingcloser21 · 13/12/2021 18:37

St Paul’s stage 1 results were out today. Did anyone else sit the pre-test? DS has been invited to stage 2 on
4 Jan. It’d be great if anyone has any insight of the type of exam/any helpful pointers as they don’t publish papers.

Mumchumof2 · 13/12/2021 19:37

Oh DS also sat the st Paul’s but we haven’t heard back today. I’m guessing the boys that got through were messaged today and all others will be told tomorrow Confused
