We are having similar issues re. Summer A level work. The problem is DD doesn't even know if she can take her chosen subjects, the blocking hasn't been confirmed yet and 3 of her chosen subjects are in one block, she's also been given work for her reserved choices, which she in no way wants to do at A level (and is unlikely to be successful with).
Also having similar issues of there being little choice of 6th forms locally and 2 of her A level choices are only offered at her school.
We do have a leaver's jumper and a prom though and get to pick results up in person (though I'd rather not have that).

UncomfortableSilence · 22/05/2021 08:50

It's so unfair on the kids how all schools are taking a different approach.

As for results day I can't think of the reasoning behind that? The kids are all in school together anyway it's really no different, we even had our kids in for results, in a slightly different way, last year.

I really feel for you and him.

ihearttc · 22/05/2021 08:51

Unfortunately there is no way I can get him there. I’m a TA so I’m in school myself by 8.15 and I’ve also got another DS who is 10 who I need to get to school. DH works in London and we are on the Norfolk/Suffolk border.

ihearttc · 22/05/2021 08:54

@UncomfortableSilence

I honestly don’t get the reasoning behind it either. I wondered if it was some kind of National Guidance but clearly not if other schools are managing it.
They have worked so incredibly hard and now years of hard work is just going to be on a bloody email.

NotDonna · 22/05/2021 22:35

Awww that’ll be such an anti-climax and all done by Fri is so soon! Mine would have cried if they’d received bridging work. That’s just too much & too soon. I’m guessing he’s going to put it to one side for a few weeks at least & have some downtime.

Ours have also completed assessments this week. Have 3 weeks off and then in for a week of A level/next stages foundation stuff plus some general well-being things. It’s quite vague and not terribly exciting. They are doing a leavers brunch with hoodies on the last day of that week, which will be lovely and a proper to end to yr11. They never organise the proms but a bunch of mums have sorted it for yr11 and the students themselves for Yr13. Very lucky to have managed these!
School haven’t mentioned results day other than the dates, but I doubt mine are too fussed about that.

Hellohah · 23/05/2021 09:19

@UncomfortableSilence we haven't heard anything about results day. But ours are having a prom, they are doing it at the school in July. Their reasoning being if more lockdowns happen, the Year 11s are in a bubble so it can still go ahead (plus we live in a more deprived area so costs are being kept to a minimum which is sensible) so I'm imagining a results day is on the cards.
Although at the moment, I'm not looking forward to results day haha!

UncomfortableSilence · 23/05/2021 13:17

Hello, I think your school is doing the most sensible thing in terms of Prom and can't understand why others aren't following, where ours is booked it simply won't go ahead if 21/6 doesn't happen it's so risky.

ihearttc · 23/05/2021 14:20

@Hellohah

I’d be more than happy with that, at least they are getting something. All they want is a chance to dress up and hang out with their mates.

MoiraQueen · 23/05/2021 14:34

Our school doesn't have a space that can hold all yr11, so a prom onsite wouldn't work.

Lowther · 24/05/2021 22:29

Last week of year 11! Which is just as well. DD is running low. Physics tomorrow, not her favourite subject. History on Thursday which is a subject that she wants to study for A level but the assessments have dragged on for so long she has totally lost her 'mojo'-not bothered what grade she gets now! Needs to book leavers hoodies by midweek and hopefully has prom end of June at school. Needs to go in for results day.
Looking forward to end of assessments, hope to go out to cinema and restaurant on Thursday -it's been too long.
Hope you and all DC are well and looking forward to some form of break!

collywobble · 26/05/2021 21:14

We've just had a text from school that the whole of year 11 is closing due to the high number of covid cases so nolast day farewells or the planned trip to Nandos for my Ds just an abrupt end to a dreadful year. It's going to be a long summer for them all. Hopefully summer jobs will be available to give them some much needed life experience after isolating at home for such a long time.

Oh no what a shame! And a worry that cases are rising again :(

DD finished yesterday - she just has a leavers ceremony on Friday and then she is done. You can sense the relief - she is so much happier and relaxed already. I hope this Indian variant buggers off so they can properly enjoy the summer!

ihearttc · 27/05/2021 16:12

DS’s last day is tomorrow. I’ve been upset all week (I don’t deal with change very well) but today has really got to me. He said that their old form tutor who they had from Y7-9 Skyped them all from Australia in form time today and spoke to them all individually about how proud he was of them. In my mind DS is still that little Y7 who came home and told me how cool his form tutor was. God knows what I’m going to be like tomorrow.

PettsWoodParadise · 27/05/2021 17:40

@ihearttc I totally sympathise. It is DD’s last day tmw, she is in for half a day. All the badges I would never let her put on her blazer for fear of ruining it have been carefully removed from her rucksack and attached to the blazer and it now weighs a ton.

She leaves at midday so the morning is really just about an assembly on the field and signing shirts.

Feeling very emotional.

Lowther · 27/05/2021 21:54

@ihearttc hoping all goes well tomorrow.
Tomorrow is DD last day. Final assessment today, then a 'friend' decided to call her by racial slur so DD is understandably upset. What a way to spend your penultimate day. School have handled it well but DD in tears. Have been out for a meal as planned but both emotionally drained. Back home, a nice cup of tea and sleep. Just hope she goes in tomorrow and enjoys her last day. She has had wonderful comments and emails from her teachers and I know she has had great support from some of her friends. Just can't understand why some have to be so nasty. They are all stressed I know but the comments were just horrid.
Looking forward to better day.
Hope you all have have calm and enjoy the last days of year 11.

SB1971 · 28/05/2021 13:05

Last day for my DD today. They had shirt signing yesterday and today post their last assessment have an assembly and then inflatables, bbq and photo booth. They are not doing a prom though so this will be it for her as there is no 6th form and she will be going to college in September. Feeling pretty emotional, me not her -she is just excited about partying tonight..

TeenMinusTests · 29/05/2021 08:22

It is so weird getting to the end of GCSEs and only being on thread 2, with all our DCs having had such different experiences.

We actually still have a week to go, as school let DD defer one assessment. Can't start prepping until she has recovered from yesterday's though.

No clarity on prom, presumably awaiting Boris' decision.
Getting fitted for dress over half term anyway.

indy69 · 29/05/2021 18:50

Four more days and we are done! Coming week is the last with a leavers assembly scheduled on Thursday! No prom though. Wonder what is going to happen for results day. It is such a shite way of ending such a an important year. Half the cohort is moving on to other sixth forms as this one has very high expectations so a real anti climax. And a long summer ahead.

indy69 · 30/05/2021 20:42

And no results day either 🙁

Thethingswedoforlove · 31/05/2021 09:59

What do you mean by no results day @indy69?

indy69 · 31/05/2021 10:39

@thethingswedoforlove we will get the results by email. No going to school and collecting etc

OP posts:
Toobuktim · 31/05/2021 18:31

So DS will have a prom, in the school hall, but still a prom.
Results day will only be emails at 8am on the 12th......this isn’t unusual for me as I’m Scottish and we only received our results by post anyway.
He’s been finished over a week now and has started online learning provided by the school and bridging work for 6th form.
He had an exam for every subject that was worth 50% of his grade, the rest made up by mocks and school work and estimated grades.
The school year just seems to have fizzled out, he’s been trying to get a summer job, but there is very little out there.

ihearttc · 06/06/2021 10:07

How is everyone feeling about the first day of not going to school? I know they were off last week but it was half term (I’ve got a younger DS as well).

DS1 is doing some spreadsheet work for the company DH works for. He is starting some of his bridging work for A levels, going to the gym and playing football with his mates. He has applied for 20 jobs and heard nothing. He found an ideal one in McDonald’s but they won’t accept applications until after July 1st due to school leaving age?

UncomfortableSilence · 06/06/2021 16:59

DD is bored already apparently HmmEven though she's barely been at home.

She's going to make a plan for her bridging work soon, there's a lot of it and has also applied for a few jobs, she heard back from Next that she got through the first round so now to see if she gets any further.

We're going shopping and for some lunch tomorrow as that's my day off and she has plans for most of the rest of the week.

She also offered to pick her sister up a few days a week as the last term of school is manic for me so it means I can stay late. Her sister is Y6 so we're now building up to her leaving too!

She did say she has been feeling quite anxious and not sleeping well so hoping that settles for her.

ihearttc · 06/06/2021 17:19

I think DS is feeling rather strange as well. Half term has been really busy (I deliberately planned lots of stuff) but I think it’s going to feel really strange tomorrow. Good idea about picking up siblings…I also work in a school so DS2 normally walks up to my school (it’s a split site) as he is Y5 and we go home from there but he’d love his brother to get him one day!
