Good morning Mums,

My DD will start her GCSE journey this September. MN always has such good advice that I thought we could have a new thread to support each other. My DD has 4 options apart from English, Science AQA and Maths Edexcel. She has Art and History - Edexcel, and Psychology and Economics - AQA. It wpuld be lovely to know what your DC are doing and we could share resources here. I look forward to meeting you all on this thread. We have 4 weeks to go to start of term and a ton of homework to finish. My DD is feeling too lazy to do anything at the moment, but I guess they have earned the break. I will start reminding her next week about the work. Thanks

No homework set here, though I am doing some maths and SPaG with DD2 as she struggles. She's gone for Geography, RE, Food & Drama.

DD1 did GCSEs under the old system, so although I've done this before the amount of exams is way more so it will be different. Also DD2 only has 1 option in common with DD1 so I have a lot of new stuff to learn. Smile

DS1 is now about to start Year 10 but his school do 3 year GCSE so he picked his options at the end of Year 8. Apart from English Lang/Lit, Maths and triple science he is also doing Geography, Spanish, GCSE PE and a Btec Media course (which was GCSE Media Studies until the last day of term when they decided to change it to a BTEC!).

No homework set here...he has been out having fun with his friends and playing football with DS2 (who is nearly 9). We go on holiday next week as well.

Here's my tip:

  • Look out in your local charity shops for revision guides. I now have almost a full set, but now is a good time as this year's y11s clear out their rooms. Make sure you get the right board and the 9-1 guides.

hi
My Ds is also about to start Y10 he's doing Maths, 2 English, Chinese, 3 sciences, drama, Rs and an EPQ. He's doing iGcSEs apart from drama and Chinese .

He was meant to read "Lord of the Flies" and some physics set but nothing started far to busy playing sport.

In the last leg of waiting for DD's gcse results, which are all up in the air as she was ill throughout the whole exam period and actually missed 2 full subjects. Just hoping she's got enough for sixth form

My DS is going into Y10 in September. He's doing 2 Maths, 2 English, 3 Science, Geography, Business & PE. I have revision guides for a lot of these as DD did virtually the same GCSEs last year.

The only homework has been an optional Maths booklet which he's already completed and i've marked. I would have liked to know what Eng Lit texts he was going to be studying as this will be his weakest subject.

So we've been on holiday and he's in tennis camp this week. After that i run out of ideas with 4+ weeks to fill!

My DS starts year 10 in September. He's doing Maths, English, double science, PE, Spanish, Computing Science, History and compulsory Welsh GCSEs.

I'm clueless as I was brought up in Scotland so o grades and Highers as were !

No homework here. He's mainly been down the beach surfing and now off on holiday!

Teen that is a great tip. I bought some of the guides from year 11 students at about half the price. Sadly I can’t find anything for AQA economics as the board actually says they have no published texts, Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

He then wants to spend some time going over some science

I will join, DS is starting his GCSE's in September, doing English, Maths, Further Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History, Geography and then Sports Studies (which isn't a GCSE).

We've been told to read the books for English... An Inspector Calls and Macbeth. Also doing either A Christmas Carol or Jekyll and Hyde. He's half way through A Christmas Carol, and has started making some notes, done a bit of background on Dickens.

Currently most worried about History, as in the end of Year 9 mocks he was told he's on for a 3, which is obviously not good enough.

We've already signed up for the free version of Seneca, which could prove useful and created folders for each subject, so he can build his revision as he goes.

I am impressed that your dc know what English lit texts they are doing as ds states that Lord of the Flies is just book to read and what we do depends on which teacher we get and what they feel like.

Not totally convinced that he's right. reading this book would be a start but he has done bits of maths and Chinese over the last week.

Does everyone know what texts their DC are doing for English?

DS who’s going into Y11 has Macbeth and An Inspector calls etc but DD has Romeo and Juliet instead of Macbeth? Bit odd as they’re both top set. DD is just a year younger

same school as well :)

We were told definitely An Inspector Calls and Macbeth, but either A Christmas Carol or Jekyll and Hyde depends on the teacher. They're both so short that I'm not bothered about reading them both.

I'm hoping Macbeth, and then anything else except LotF which I find an incredibly disturbing book and I think it really won't suit DD2 at all.

I'd like An Inspector Calls as it's a play and DD is doing Drama so we could cover 2 things in one go.

Just re-read DS's Options booklet and it says that the English Lit board (and presumably the texts) would be decided on after this year's GCSE results!

DD is doing An Inspector Calls, Romeo and Juliet and Dr Jenkyl and Mr Hyde. They also have a poetry anthology.

Can I join, DD1 for me, she's doing Maths, Double Science, Eng Lit/Lang, RE ( compulsory) Italian, History, Buisness and Child Development.

English texts are Macbeth, An Inspector Calls and A Christmas Carol, she's been given a reading list and work to do on that list but no other homework except for organising all folders ready to start.

We've also been sent some suggestions for revision books to buy for RE, English and Science so far.

I have a DD starting year 10 to do maths, 2 x english, separate sciences, Spanish, Latin, art and RE (compulsory).
I don’t think she has homework but her some of her files and books definitely need a sort out and tidy up.
I know she is doing Romeo and Juliet and Pride and Prejudice. Not sure about the others.

My advice for those of you monitoring Eng Lit texts would be to watch out for National Theatre and RSC screenings of Macbeth, Romeo & Juliet and An Inspector Calls. There was a flurry of them in 2017 & 18 when the plays were screened live at cinemas. They were great for adding a different perspective. Even regional productions of things like Jekyll & Hyde helped especially if they read them earlier in year 9 & 10 and had forgotten them a few months later.
