Hello All,

Welcome to thread 6 - results...

Last thread here:

Gcses 2019 support thread 5 http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/secondary/3610608-gcses-2019-support-thread-5

It's been a fantastically supportive set of threads to date with a diverse set of expectations and challenges (for both parents and children).

I expect this thread may be the most emotive for us all (crikey how did the time fly!!)

Good luck everyone Thanks

Has anyone got any experience in getting papers remarked ? DD was 1 Mark of tne next grade up and has been advised to get a remark , she is terrified her grade might go down !
She doesn’t need the next grade but it would be a massive confidence boost to her if she got it as it is in English and she struggles with dyslexia.
Not sure what to do .

tararabumdeay · 22/08/2019 19:01

I couldn't be more proud and chuffed for my students who came to college having to retake English Lang, some through the routes of independent living and functional skills, others who had three or more attempts at the whilst at college because of its compulsory status.

Well 15 more young people (amongst others), who were perhaps disadvantaged because of different disabilities, will get their letters tomorrow saying they've got another important qualification to their credit.

I fought for the concessions they're entitled to and some SLT commented that there were more kids with concessions than without (not true).

The one thing these particular group of successful students have in common is they kept trying, gave it their best and quietly (sometimes) believed in themselves.

'Well done folks! You have flown higher.'

MillicentMartha · 22/08/2019 19:11

There seems to be a bit of confusion around the double science grading. You just get a grade for all the 6 papers of 2 numbers. It’s worth 2 GCSEs. It’s not ‘one grade is paper 1, the other paper 2.’
Because it’s worth 2 GCSEs the grading is given as 2 numbers which are graded more finely than the other GCSEs. Top grade is 9-9, next 9-8, then 8-8, 8-7, 7-7, 7-6, 6-6, 6-5, 5-5, 5-4, 4-4, 4-3, 3-3, 3-2, 2-2, 2-1, 1-1, U. The higher number is always first, you can’t get 6-7, it would be 7-6. You can’t get 6-4 or 9-7, the numbers are always the same or consecutive. Some print outs may have 66 instead of 6-6 etc. It’s ‘six six’ not ‘sixty-six.’

It’s like the BTecs, where you can get MMM or DDM etc if you are doing an extended diploma which is worth 3 A levels.

MillicentMartha · 22/08/2019 19:14

Pinkpeanut, if she’s one mark off the higher grade it’s pretty unlikely (but not impossible) that it would go down. It might stay the same but I’d be tempted to remark.

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 22/08/2019 19:39

pinkpeanut we are having two of ds's re-marked because he is within 1 or 2 marks of the upper grade. If they're that close even a re-mark that actually brings them down a bit won't take them into the grade below they currently have, iyswim. I'd go for it.

bizzey · 22/08/2019 19:41

Well i am feeling better now that he is home and we have had a chat.
I was worried that he would not get into 6th form with the 4 in English.
But i think his better maths and science grades have evened it out .

Lots of issues with the AQA English.
It was the first thing he said to me .
Lots of his friends way below expected.
??Maybe a school thing?
We looked up the grades and boundries ..
3 marks off the next grade for Art and 2 for buisness studies.
We are leaving them ad they are .
He's done now and can nust focus on 3 subjects he wants/likes instead of a whole load he hated!

threesenoughthanks · 22/08/2019 19:48

Is anyone thinking of going for a remark in Art? Dd got a 6 which she was a little disappointed with as it's an A level choice. She was 2 marks off a 7 EDEXL board. She can still do it at her sixth form but as others have said it's a confidence thing. She got 7's and 8's in everything else so very chuffed.

Bellystuffer · 22/08/2019 19:59

Had a knackering day, DD got one A*, 5 A's, 3 B's and 3 C's so she's happy and we spent the entire afternoon registering at college 😴. I'm so pleased for her but have mixed feelings too, feel deflated after the stress of getting through the exams (she needed a huge lot of hand holding due to MH and tbh I feel like I went through the whole thing too). Anyone else just feel done in now?

SolitudeAtAltitude · 22/08/2019 20:01

Yes bellystuffer, I ended up in the pub at 5 with some friends who felt the same!

Arewedone · 22/08/2019 20:06

Adrenaline slump here too I’m home alone until Sunday now and mentally frazzled. Crashed on the sofa in front of meh tv with a glass of wine! Can’t believe we are through the other side!

GingerbreadTeen · 22/08/2019 20:12

MillicentMartha or anyone else!
My DS got a 4-3 for double science and we have counted that 4 towards the four grade 4s he needed for his course. Is that correct?

blondestresshead · 22/08/2019 20:12

gleegeek that sounds very familiar!
Your DD has done extremely well! But it's difficult to convince a 16 year old Hmm

pointythings · 22/08/2019 20:13

We've just been out for dinner and are now crashing out at home. I'm back at work tomorrow but at least we have the long weekend with some go.od weather in prospect. DD2 is shattered but happy

dollybird · 22/08/2019 20:13

Really chuffed with DD's results. She got 8,8,7,7,6,6,4,4,4. She got 2's in her mock exams for English Language and History, and has managed to turn that around to a 4 and a 6, so she's very happy (she was assessed and given 25% extra time). She got an 8 for maths which she's doing at a-level, she's also doing psychology and sociology, so I suppose my only concern is if two fours in English might disadvantage her. The 7's are for science.

LynetteScavo · 22/08/2019 20:15

I'm struggling to find the grade boundaries for WJEC English Language. Can anybody help?

I'm in England and have a numeric grade ( Is Wales still grading in letters?) Any help/link would be appreciated ConfusedSmile

threesenoughthanks · 22/08/2019 20:18

Yep Dd has crashed now that the adrenaline has worn off. Definitely more stressful than my own exams.

Bellystuffer · 22/08/2019 20:20

Glad it's not just me, yep this has definitely been far more stressful than I ever found my own exams

Bellystuffer · 22/08/2019 20:21

Lynette, Wales is still grading in letters including English language so I'm not sure how the boundaries work with you having a number grade.

Piggywaspushed · 22/08/2019 20:22

I have those grade boundaries (they are Eduqas in England)

I can't copy and paste. Which grades are you interested in lynette?

LosingHerMissMarbles · 22/08/2019 20:24

Lynette In the drop down for the exam board in the WJEC grade boundaries site you need to choose Eduquas not WJEC. That gives you the syllabuses that provide numerical grades.

xyzandabc · 22/08/2019 20:27

@LynetteScavo
For wjec reformed linear qualifications (i.e numerical graded GCSEs). Search for Eduqas grade boundaries June 2019. They are the same board but differently branded. Check that the subject specification has the same number as the spec your daughter took just to be doubly sure as we don't do this qualification I'm only 95% sure!

Powergower · 22/08/2019 20:29

Ds got 7 x 8 and 1 x 7. His school have submitted 4 remarks where he is 1 mark away from a level 9. This is unsettling as it's so close being 1 mark away but I'd advise him not to go for a remark. He went to get his results alone and had signed the remark form for school before he got back. School ate convinced he will go up the one mark bit wear I'd he goes down and loses his 8? And how long does it take?

I thinkhe was disappointed with the 7 and possibly a lack of 9s but I'm delighted and by evening he had decided he was really pleased. I really hate the new marking system where a grade A 7 is seen as a disappointment for some kids. It's bloody amazing especially given that the gcses are so difficult now!

Anyone else's schools preparing for remarks? Or any experience of them?

DS did really well and we're very proud. 3x8, 4x7 and 3x6. Got 8s and 7s in the subjects he wants to do for A level. A weird anomaly for one history component grade which brought his overall grade down (got a 4 when all the other component grades were an 8) but he seems to be over that now. Might ask school to look at it but we'll see.
This is my DS who has come through cancer, chemo and is still dealing with late effects. He's annoyed that he missed out on a couple of 9s which delights me as he's obviously focused on his future, which thanks to our wonderful NHS he now has. It's been a good day!

Wasrelaxing · 22/08/2019 20:35

bottom line is my DS can’t do the A levels he wants at the school he wanted to go to.

We didn’t apply anywhere else.

He wanted to study Law, politics & sociology.
He got a 6, 6 5’s and a 4 in maths.
They suggest he does applied level in business, criminology & science. The others applied options are music, dance & drama.

So now we are applying to the other options but as it’s late entry who knows what will happen.

We are looking at apprenticeships but I don’t appear to see anything where he gets to do a qualification along side it.

I’ve tried not going to uni, the government apprentice site, and lots of other search engines.

What do we do now?
