Hello All,

Welcome to thread 6 - results...

Last thread here:

Gcses 2019 support thread 5 http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/secondary/3610608-gcses-2019-support-thread-5

It's been a fantastically supportive set of threads to date with a diverse set of expectations and challenges (for both parents and children).

I expect this thread may be the most emotive for us all (crikey how did the time fly!!)

Good luck everyone Thanks

Popper you can’t wait till Monday!!!!

tactum · 22/08/2019 16:15

We're well chuffed overall - all A*,As and Bs. Exceeded expectations in maths and science.

BUT we have a massive anomaly in her language. Missed a 7 by 2 marks. But looking at the split across her papers she got an 8 in 3 of them and a 2 in Reading. How is that even possible??!! She thought it went brilliantly and she judged all her other results really well. Have requested remark immediately. I just don't get it. Fortunately, 6th Form have let her do it even tho they really want a 7. I think there must be some kind of clerical error - that's what I'm hoping for anyway. Anyone heard of anything similar?

Foslady · 22/08/2019 16:20

So many congratulations to everyone. All happy in this house - a couple of papers are going in for remarking - 2 marks off for both so I said ok and paid up!

slingthegin · 22/08/2019 16:30

Congratulations to all on some great results on here.

It's been a tough day as not great results here for DS (feel like I'm in a MN and peer minority).

Only 2 at level 4 (not the ones that matter) and the rest 3s and 2s.

DS disappointed in not getting 4s in English and Maths as he assumed he was secure in those.

He had a level 3 vocational course lined up as feels final exams are not for him (Hmm) but think he'll be looking at level 2 with resits. Will be seeing the college tomorrow to talk through his options.

Bobbybobbins · 22/08/2019 16:34

Well done to everyone's DCs! 👏

My biggest happiness this year is a boy in my form group. His mother is an alcoholic, dad in and out of jail and brother permanently excluded in year 8. He got 5-6 in everything despite a very rocky time at school. Lots of tears 😭

blondestresshead · 22/08/2019 16:37

Thank you Bimkom that's very interesting.

DD is not thinking of applying to Oxford, but we were very interested to see the 9 and 8 are considered on a par. There seems to be a lot of hype about the level 9 - maybe because it is a new way of marking?

I'm happy with DD anyway - she has met or exceeded her targets, so she needs to stop comparing herself to others!

DeRigueurMortis · 22/08/2019 16:37

Sling really sorry to hear that.

Hopefully you'll get some alternative options from the collage that will allow him to fulfil his ambitions via an alternative pathway Thanks

‘9’ seems like it should be more achievable than ‘A**’ somehow, when that isn’t the case at all. Probably something to do with the way you look at A to E lined up v 1-9 and picking the middle as a Pass. That’s the way my brain looks at it, anyway Grin

whiteroseredrose · 22/08/2019 16:50

DD has done brilliantly. She was B average in Y9 but really started to work at the beginning of Y10. She's come out with seven grade 9s and two grade 8s.

I've got to put it on here or I'll burst. Other than DGPs I'm not allowed to tell anyone!!

gleegeek · 22/08/2019 17:06

Well done to all happy with their marks. Commiserations to those disappointed, but there will be another route round to get where they want to be.
Dd's results were much better than I was expecting, 1x9, 5x8, 5x7 and 1x6 and she was initially pleased and relieved. However, she has since discovered that her friend got 6x9 and 5x8, is on the school's twitter page etc so we have had many tearsSad and feeling like her results aren't good enough! It's so hard, there's so much pressure on them...

JuniperOakPark · 22/08/2019 17:08

Congratulations to everyone, children and parents/carers. For me this support thread going through GCSEs has been a lifesaver.

I have name changed several times throughout but my child was the one that kept throwing up before the exams. He had revised and put the effort in, just nervous. He was aiming for a minimum of 7s across the board.

Well he did amazingly

5 x 9s which include his A level choice subjects
3 x 8s
1 x 7 in English Lit

He is incredibly pleased and we are relieved it is all finally over and beyond proud of him.

emilyjeff · 22/08/2019 17:10

My DS has done ok, he got all 4's and 5's.

He seems happy enough with that but I feel a little frustrated. He is a very intelligent lad but kind of lost his motivation for school over the last year or so. He did pretty much no revision and wasn't bothered by the exams whatsoever, I think he knew he could get through with minimum effort tbh.

He already has a place at AFC Harrogate for March 2020 so the results don't really matter I just feel disappointed that he didnt reach his potential

AGirlHasNoCake · 22/08/2019 17:18

some controversy over english:

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/06/28/examiners-lefthorrified-byflaws-englishgcse-marking/

webjunkie · 22/08/2019 17:18

Can anyone help me understand these results? My son (year 10) got his English Literature results today but only a grade not a mark. How do you all know the mark?

Arewedone · 22/08/2019 17:18

@ArthurtheCatsHumanSlave similar here, 2 marks away from a 9 in Religious Studies so thinking to go for a re-mark, school have emphasised to all parents that grades could go down but I think we will take the gamble looking at the grade boundaries.
Juniper- big congrats, do remember your posts. You must be elated!
@whiteroseredrose it’s allowed here :) We are all proud of our Dc’s achievements it’s been such a slog !

DeRigueurMortis · 22/08/2019 17:23

That's interesting agirl

On that basis anyone with lower than expected AQA English Language marks might want to consider a re-mark - especially as the examples in the article show a massive uplift from the initial marking and that then done by a senior examiner (26 to 40 marks in one example - that's skipping well over a few grade boundaries).

OP posts:
JuniperOakPark · 22/08/2019 17:30

@Arewedone aw thanks, we are over the moon. My son has been working at this since year 10. He is a grafter and showed that with hard work and a lot of past paper question practise you can increase your grade.

@webjunkie some exam boards don't put the UMS (what their mark was) on the exam results paper, so Ds doesn't know what he got for AQA English Lit and I am desperate to know where he landed on that one. Your school will be able to tell you.

webjunkie · 22/08/2019 17:35

@juniperoakpark thank you! That makes some sense. The result was a bit of a shock tbh so we have asked for the actual mark and paper through the school. I just couldn’t understand why I couldn’t see it on the paperwork 😄

JuniperOakPark · 22/08/2019 17:40

@webjunkie it is totally confusing. Which is why these support threads are so important Grin we can ask the questions!

Darbs76 · 22/08/2019 17:41

Just found out DS was one mark away from a 9 (the only GCSE he did as year 10 stil). Going to request a remark. He’s done amazingly well but of course is now disappointed. Hate these 9’s

fortyfifty · 22/08/2019 17:49

Hi - that is an interesting article about the english language marking. I came on to ask whether we should pay for a remark for DD for her English english GCSE. She got a 6. Her English lit grade is a 9.

Her other GCSE grades are 8s and 9s except for her modern foreign language where she got a 6 and that really was a subject she struggled with.

Based on her mock, classroom performance and past papers and questions given by teachers, she was predicted an 8 in English language GCSE. There were no English teachers available to speak to at school this morning and her English teacher left this summer.

justfortoday4367 · 22/08/2019 18:01

It’s interesting around the English AQA my daughter was predicted 4 lit & 5 for language - she got a 6-6 we are chuffed for her. But a lot of her friends who where predicted higher marks all got anything from 5-7 - some of them predicted 9’s.

Hoooo · 22/08/2019 18:17

One of my sons friends was predicted a 9 in lit and got a 3?????

Apocalyptichorsewoman · 22/08/2019 18:33

Ds2 did better in English than predicted- he was expecting 5 and 6, and got 6 and 7 🤷

Am really pleased for him though- he got
6,7,7,8,9,9,9,9,9. Bless him 😁 We are going out for steak tonight...

DeRigueurMortis · 22/08/2019 18:58

Congratulations Apo! Enjoy your steak.

We'd offered to take DS out for dinner but about 2 hours after we got back he just crashed out fast asleep on the sofa and hasn't moved since.

I'm pretty sure he didn't get much sleep last night and has been running on adrenaline only - bless.

So we have decided to let him be and go out celebrating tomorrow night!

In the meantime we're relegated to the snug so we don't wake him up!
