Hello All,

Welcome to thread 6 - results...

Last thread here:

Gcses 2019 support thread 5 http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/secondary/3610608-gcses-2019-support-thread-5

It's been a fantastically supportive set of threads to date with a diverse set of expectations and challenges (for both parents and children).

I expect this thread may be the most emotive for us all (crikey how did the time fly!!)

Good luck everyone Thanks

Sounds like there's a spectrum of ways DC receive their results here. DS has to go in to school but only from 10am; other local schools get emails from 8am or can go in earlier from 8.30am. He's very nervous today. Trying to think of something to do to distract him.....and me!
Needs at least 7s in the subjects he wants to do for A level (8 in maths to do FM but has decided not to do that anyway). Only 24 hours to go.....

ThelmaDinkley · 21/08/2019 10:09

Hello all, was on the thread before but under diff username. Very very anxious here and dd is getting a brace fitted this afternoon which she is not looking forward too either. She’s got two offers for sixth form and can’t decide which one to choose! Good luck to all tomorrow

onaroll · 21/08/2019 10:14

Thanks for making new thread.
Results day - so near but so far.
I really, really hope everyone gets what makes them happy.

But if they don’t - it’s not the end of the world.

My Ds ‘bombed’ GCSE results in the eyes of his school and was told he didn’t have the grades for the 6th form.
(He got a wealth a GCSE passes but none with top grade, he didn’t bomb in our eyes).
He was made to feel a failure by the school - I wasn’t with him as he wanted to be with his friends. Another parent became involved and told them they were being too harsh.
My Ds ‘burnt his bridges’ ; reacted by telling them to stick their 6th form and he would find somewhere that would value him more and not label him as a failure than they did for his further education. ( I admit his language was far more colourful).

What they did that day was give him a personal fight. He made it his mission to prove them wrong.
He has - he went on to acheive top grades with his further education. He is now half way through his Degree Apprenticeship and is sought after to go and give motivational talks to school age kids to tell his story.

He now feels his not so brilliant GCSE results were the making of him.

I will be going with Dd tomorrow but staying in car to wait and see if I get called in....

Again, fingers crossed for everybody tomorrow.

ThelmaDinkley · 21/08/2019 10:28

Onaroll - well done to your son and shame on the school. Awful way to treat kids. I’ve told dd results aren’t the be all and end all but she’s in a state especially about art as it’s been moderated and she knows grades can go up or down.

gleegeek · 21/08/2019 10:49

DeRigueurMortis thanks for the new thread. Do we need to try to fill the other one up so we don't lose anyone??
Dd was up in the night with a panic attackSad Can't wait for tomorrow to be over with. She has gone off to a theme park today to scare herself witless in another way!
Results from 10am tomorrow, college enrolment next week so no rush for is.
Am Angry about the PP waiting for a possible phonecall from school - that's all kinds of wrong... hopefully you won't hear anything 🤞

Frith2013 · 21/08/2019 10:50

Son2 still asleep. He’s averaging 12 hours a day here as he’s grown 3 inches since May!

He doesn’t want to get his results so I’ll be driving in tomorrow to get them (12 miles away).

He’s not been in a mainstream school since year 4. Autism, anxiety, mild learning difficulties.

He needs 4 at level 3 to do the college course he wants. It would be great if he could get maths and English, to save retaking them at college.

My predictions are:
RE - U
History - 2 or 3
Science - 2 or 3
Eng Lang - 4 would be nice!
Maths - hopefully a 4
Eng Lit - an unknown quantity as he’s not good at it but put hours of revision in
BTEc Catering - pass or merit
BTEC Sports - pass

Blastandtroph · 21/08/2019 11:00

New here.

Thanks to onaroll for her post. Good on your DS.

Mildly dreading tomorrow as think it'll reinforce what we expect (minimal passes) and I can't help feeling some guilt about that.

Hopefully college (and we'll know tomorrow if it'll be a level 2 or 3 BTEC) will be the new start DS needs.

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 21/08/2019 11:18

Well done onaroll to your ds. Ds's school are of the same ilk and managed to make him feel like a failure before he'd even sat the bloody exams Angry. He is thrilled to have two other 6th form offers and to not even be bothering about staying on at a place that doesn't value him.

Having said that...nerves abound here. I feel sick every time I think about tomorrow morning. I'm dropping him off at 8.30am and waiting in the car. I would prefer he opened the results out of school, for the reasons above, but he says he wants to talk to a couple of the teachers he liked, which is fair enough.

I am absolutely dreading it. Can't feel optimistic, even though I want to for his sake. At least it will be over this time tomorrow.

MrsKittyFane1 · 21/08/2019 11:41

What is everyone doing today to keep their DC or themselves busy? Time is dragging! Work for most P obviously but what about others??? 😣

MrsKittyFane1 · 21/08/2019 11:41

Nerves are kicking in here.

Hoooo · 21/08/2019 11:41

Ds1 got 3 6th form offers.
Then no.3 decided that he couldn't do what they said he could (history and geography A level)
No.2 then lost its bus contract so no way to get there (no public transport)
So it's 🤞 for no.1 choice whoch needs the highest grades.
I'm a wreck 😫🙄

Hoooo · 21/08/2019 11:43

Ds is still in bed watching a film.

I didn't sleep last night so feel awful.

Ds is going to speedway tonight with dh.

Hoooo · 21/08/2019 11:44

Ds2 has a nasty insect bite so I'm keeping my eye on that, may take him to pharmacy later.

Been to see mum and check she's ok.

I could do with going for a walk or going out, but I'm just so tired.

MrsKittyFane1 · 21/08/2019 11:53

Monty : If it is not good the school will contact us the day before (TODAY!!)

I'm surprised they can even hint at results re. 6th form place before tomorrow! In fact I know they can't!!
Having said that, I hope the phone stays quiet for you today!

MrsKittyFane1 · 21/08/2019 11:54

I need to concentrate on NOT passing my nerves onto DC... it's bloody difficult! I feel sick 😅

Saucery · 21/08/2019 12:00

I am more excited about these results than I was about my own! Not through any ‘living vicariously’ reason, just because I didn’t sit the exams so I don’t know exactly how they’ve gone.
DS wants to ninja in, sign up for 6th form, ninja out again. No leaping photos for him Grin

MrsKittyFane1 · 21/08/2019 12:04

I am more excited about these results than I was about my own!

Me too. Excited and NERVOUS!! 😅

Parsley65 · 21/08/2019 12:06

Dd is on the last day of NCS today. She has really enjoyed it and I think the new friends/experiences/routine have been very good for her.
She is very nervous about tomorrow. I've been telling her since Christmas (after not putting in the effort for mocks) that it'll all be fine - if she puts in the work. Luckily she did, so I really, really hope it goes to plan 😬

eatthatfrog · 21/08/2019 12:08

good luck to everyone and hope they achieve what they want to proceed.

very anxious here as dd was ill so no idea what here grades will look like tomorrow hoping she does well and can proceed school will give medical exemption from all 7s but she wants to have done well as she wa too ill to sit 2 complete subjects.

It has been a long summer but really looks like she has started to turn the corner and really really don't want anything to push her back. She is spending the night with friend and we are meet at school at 9am to collect results.
fingers crossed

FAQs · 21/08/2019 12:09

@onaroll love your sons attitude! He will go far, half the battle of success is attitude.

Someone can have all 9s and a poor attitude.

pointythings · 21/08/2019 12:11

DD2 has dark blue hair and is intending to go in fully outrageous. She's predicted 6 and up for everything but after last week's harsh A level boundaries we will see. We go in at 9.30 and school is 5 minutes away.

marmiteloversunite · 21/08/2019 12:42

@MrsKittyFane1 I am keeping myself busy with a smear test this afternoon! Having a lovely week! Confused

DeRigueurMortis · 21/08/2019 12:54

Well DS has finally admitted he's really nervous.

Results wise we are really looking for an 8 in Maths and Physics, 7 in Computer Science and a 5 in English, to do the A Levels he wants at his choice of school.

Tbh were most worried about the English.

It's his worst subject and he didn't think the exams went well.

I couldn't sleep last night (hence the late night thread creation) - I kept imagining every scenario from devastating failure to great success.

I'm far more nervous for DS than I was for myself!!!

I'm surprised some schools are calling people today if they haven't achieved their grades. I thought there was a very strict embargo on results until tomorrow.

Presumably the schools get a heads up so they know who they need to speak to/make judgement calls on etc re: A Level choices.

Well anyway it's only one more sleep...

OP posts:
DeRigueurMortis · 21/08/2019 12:55

Sorry just to add - DS's school also did photos of the A Level results that they posted on the website.

DS has said he's taking in his ski balaclava just in case anyone tries to photograph him!

Checking in to the new thread and panicking at the talk of grades being lower because A Levels were.

Slowest. Day. Ever!
