Hello All,

Welcome to thread 6 - results...

Last thread here:

Gcses 2019 support thread 5 http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/secondary/3610608-gcses-2019-support-thread-5

It's been a fantastically supportive set of threads to date with a diverse set of expectations and challenges (for both parents and children).

I expect this thread may be the most emotive for us all (crikey how did the time fly!!)

Good luck everyone Thanks

Sometimes it’s those kids that have fought against extraordinary circumstances or difficulties and or with few opportunities to achieve what might be considered average results that should be acknowledged too for they have had to perhaps work harder to gain those results. That is not to say that those that have worked hard and achieved excellent results shouldn’t be congratulated too :) !! Smile

Well done to all of your children.

What a day we've had. A mixed bag of 4s and 5s but a 3 in English, which was 4 marks off a 4. We've asked for a re-mark so fingers crossed.

Obviously a levels are out but he wasn't that keen anyway and being realistic isn't academic. We went straight to his college as they had asked for 5 4s Inc English and maths. It was all a bit vague but we think it should be OK.

LynetteScavo · 22/08/2019 21:18

Thank you everyone -I've now found those raw marks @Piggywaspushed - I've emailed school to ask for mark equiv and grade boundaries.

They're going to hate me bothering them, but I'm cross with the grade, and I don't actually have a person to be cross with. The teacher left at Christmas for a perfectly reasonable reason - DS did his best, but should have done much better. My only hope is he was one mark off and I can ask for a remark. I've spent the afternoon online searching for English tutors.

MrsKittyFane1 · 22/08/2019 21:20

It’s interesting around the English AQA my daughter was predicted 4 lit & 5 for language - she got a 6-6 we are chuffed for her. But a lot of her friends who where predicted higher marks all got anything from 5-7 - some of them predicted 9’s.

Lots of issues with the AQA English. It was the first thing he said to me Lots of his friends way below expected. ??Maybe a school thing?

Something has happened here... not just your school! We'll have to watch this space!

mumma24 · 22/08/2019 21:23

My son was very disappointed with his results and I cried. He got level 3’s in English, maths and all 3 sciences A pass in business BTEC and a merit in BTEC sport

Maydayredalert · 22/08/2019 21:26

Interesting that aqa english is mentioned! That's the one we have asked for a remark.

mumma24 · 22/08/2019 21:30

Regarding the AQA English. How you do find out their marks? Wondering if my son was close to a grade 4. He was sure he would pass that one.

webjunkie · 22/08/2019 21:31

@mumma24 I’m so sorry. Have you managed to speak to anyone at the school?

onaroll · 22/08/2019 21:31

@Wasrelaxing
Apprenticeship wise - I don’t know where in country you are but both TfL & national grid have got great apprenticeship opportunities for kids your Ds age - with qualifications.

Maydayredalert · 22/08/2019 21:33

@Mumma24 I sent him back into school to speak to the exams officer to find out his grade. English is one of his best subjects so it just didn't seem right. Fortunately his English teacher was in the office and said if it was within 5 marks it was worth applying for a remark.

HeadbandsandFlowers · 22/08/2019 21:37

I think my message might have got lost.
Has anyone else had results that are much lower than the mock results?
DD got mainly 6’s and we are so pleased for her but she got strong 7’s / 8’s in her mock exams and 8/9 as her predicted grades.

justfortoday4367 · 22/08/2019 21:52

DD has done much better than mocks and predicted grades except Geography which she is a grade below but still can take it at A Level. Though her teacher said she could see how nervous was she was before the exams.

Historygeek05 · 22/08/2019 22:00

We have also had issues with AQA English. DD and others in her class were predicted 9s and regularly achieved them in class tests and mocks. Grades today were a mixture of 6s, 7s and 8s. Still good grades obviously but agree something doesn’t seem right.

Hahaha26 · 22/08/2019 22:08

Same issue here with aqa English language. Predicted 8/9 and ended up with a 6 which was highest across the whole year group. This has always been her best subject since primary and always done well. All other subjects as predicted 7s/8s.

It makes no difference to her next step, however friends have slipped to a 4 and that has made a massive difference to next steps.

cantkeepawayforever · 22/08/2019 22:12

Conversely, DD has done rather better than might have been expected in English language (9). Her friends, including one planning to do English A-level, have much lower than expected results.

bizzey · 22/08/2019 22:25

Re AQA English grades.
A lovely poster put the grade boundries up on page 11 or maybe earlier between 6-7 am
Rubbish at linking sorry you will have to s
scroll back .
They look like there are o ly 10 marks per grade which is tight .

MillicentMartha · 22/08/2019 22:30

@GingerbreadTeen I think officially 4-3 is just under a four, it’s like getting two GCSEs between a 3 and a 4, but his college might be happy with 4-3 as it’s so close to a pass.

mumma24 · 22/08/2019 22:36

No haven’t spoken to anyone. I feel so sad for him. He struggled at school and he shouldn’t feel like this.

Foslady · 22/08/2019 22:37

Interesting what everyone is saying about AQA English, dd’s School appears to have had similar.......

lightlypoached · 22/08/2019 22:40

@lissie123 yes. Everything you said.

tactum · 22/08/2019 23:00

Re AQA English we are opposite - DD predicted 6/7 got 8/9.
Anyone able to shed any light on my post from p17 about DDs language - got a 6 with 3 8s and a 2 in reading wtaf?! How can that be possible - you can listen, speak, write but not read it?!

Ligresa · 22/08/2019 23:06

Well, dd has finally had a meltdown. She's just found out that her friend, who rubbished RS and classics has done much better than her - a 9 in RS and a 8 in classics - these are the results that dd wanted. She can't get beyond the 6 in classics! And now thinks she will be the worst performer in her A level group. Tbh I am a bit disappointed with her classics and rs results, she was doing brilliantly in class and felt the exams went really brilliantly.

Sigh.

cascade31 · 22/08/2019 23:07

just came to this thread, another AQA english grades well below what was predicted and achieved in her Mocks.
Consistently receiving 7 and above in her mocks for the last 2 years but today results 5 and 6.
Lots of her friends also received way below what they had been predicted.

AlaskanOilBaron · 23/08/2019 05:59

Hi all. My son was predicted an A* for English but got a 6 and 7, not sure if it was aqa though.

He’s so strong in English that I’m not worried about it, he’s going to do an English a-Level and I think his school will support him.

I think he skipped Hard Times and is paying the price.
