Hello All,

Welcome to thread 6 - results...

Last thread here:

Gcses 2019 support thread 5 http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/secondary/3610608-gcses-2019-support-thread-5

It's been a fantastically supportive set of threads to date with a diverse set of expectations and challenges (for both parents and children).

I expect this thread may be the most emotive for us all (crikey how did the time fly!!)

Good luck everyone Thanks

Well we're back....

Some fantastic results here and a lot of very (rightly) proud parents.

Sorry to those whose children who feel disappointed.

As for us and the dreaded English...he got 6's in both language and literature - something we thought was impossible!!!

8/9's in his other 8 GCSE's.

So 6th form of choice here we come.

Honestly it was surreal.

We picked up the results and he said he couldn't look and felt sick so gave them to me. Quick glance and I told him he had nothing to worry about. He then looked at them and the biggest grin broke on his face.

Thank goodness we have 2 years to recover until we have to do that again!

Berlin The 8 in lit should be more than acceptable for Law - shows the language grade is likely a blip!

Darbs76 · 22/08/2019 11:44

Wow some amazing results. Well done everyone.

My son did one exam a year early, RE. He got an 8, which is amazing. He’s disappointed as he wanted a 9. I hate those blooming 9’s, so much pressure on kids. I think in the long run it will make him hungry for next year. I’m going to try and make him see he’s done amazingly - an A star is not to be sniffed at!

TabbyStar · 22/08/2019 11:46

DD's boyfriend hasn't got what he needs for college, not has my best friend's DD, it's so hard navigating a range of situations amongst friends.

MoobaaMoobaa · 22/08/2019 11:47

AtiaoftheJulii I think it depends on the board. All the AQA exams had an A4 sheet with the scale of marks So for example

Maths Tier H has a breakdown of

max grade

  1. 240 -206 .
  2. 171
  3. 136
6.105
  1. 74
  2. 43
  3. 27

other exam boards have sent nothing, so we only have a mark on the list of grades.

With AQA ones we can see were DS has just missed a higher mark and were he's just scraped into a mark.

keiratwiceknightly · 22/08/2019 11:50

Great results here though another slightly odd English Lang result. She got a 6 against an 8 in lit, and I'm an English teacher so know she should have done better. This thread might suggest the bad press about aqa eng Lang marking this year had some truth behind it.

Well done to all.

DeRigueurMortis · 22/08/2019 11:50

Same here Tabby - very mixed bag re: his friends.

One has done really well, most of the others have done enough to get through to sixth form but not done done as well as they hoped, but a couple have resits to do.

congratulations to all - we've been back to school as DD wanted to speak to teachers.

Her A-level choices are secure and her teachers said they were looking forward to teaching her. English is one of her choices and her teacher said there was a bigger than expected variance between her two lit papers and DD could consider a remark but reassured her that she doesn't need it to progress.
She's one mark of next grade for another subject so school are reviewing the papers anyway.

Upshot of that is she is happier than she was on first opening the envelope...

Then.... appears to have been school wide fuck up on one subject - no-one got higher than a 6 - even pupils who'd been working at a 9... many many pupils got a 3 when that hadn't been flagged up as an issue. Not sure there is anything that can be done for the pupils but imagine the school will be having an internal review.

doublechocadooberry · 22/08/2019 11:51

Atia - DS said his envelope includes an A4 page of the marks he achieved for each exam paper. It also includes one page for one subject asking if he would like that paper remarked. We will go over it later and compare with the boundaries.

MoobaaMoobaa · 22/08/2019 11:51

AtiaoftheJulii sorry just seen you have nothing for AQA. Maybe it's the school then?

Bimkom · 22/08/2019 11:53

When we got ours on line it was the same as AtiaoftheJulii - markes for other boards but not for AQA. DS emailed his biology teacher who is head of science and asked if he could be cheeky and have the actual marks (obviously not for remarks), and the teacher said he had to ask the exams officer. So DS emailed the exams officer, who sent him a complete breakdown by paper and subject for AQA. In his case it was sheer nosyness, just wanting to know how close he was to the grade boundaries, but I suspect it is the same. Email/speak to the exams officer and they can send you a full breakdown.

Parsley65 · 22/08/2019 11:53

Lovely to see all the good results! Well done to you all.
I'm so happy they're over.
My Dd was surprised and delighted this morning with a sprinkling of 6's and 7's - even an 8 in maths!
A couple of years ago she had some serious MH problems and was barely attending lessons. She's had fab support from CAMHS and is has been on anti depressants for 12 months. I'm very proud of her 🎉

bizzey · 22/08/2019 11:57

Wow amazi ng results here..well done everyone !

I shall now lower the tone a bit 😂😂

Basicly all over the place..
Combind science higher 7/6 (though i have to say it took me ages to work out what "76" meant !!!)

Maths 6
History 5
The rest 4's.(eng x2 and RS)

very confused now re A levels.

squeakyboy · 22/08/2019 11:58

@Michaelahpurple Thanks! I have been dreading the comparison between them that people naturally go to with twins but thankfully they both were very supportive of each other and are happy with their results so it's very much thankfully a non issue! Smile

Ligresa · 22/08/2019 12:06

Which subject was that myrtle? Glad your dd is feeling a bit better.

callmeadoctor · 22/08/2019 12:08

3x8
4x7
3x6
Best bit is that the 8 are subjects for college, so fab fab So happy x

DeRigueurMortis · 22/08/2019 12:10

Myrtle golly that's worrying.

Sounds like there's been a major cock up somewhere with the teaching syllabus?

Bizzy that's a very respectable set of results!! These new number grades make it seem like passes are to be sniffed at. Just getting 9 GCSE's is an achievement in itself!

DeRigueurMortis · 22/08/2019 12:11

Parsley - that's brilliant, you must be thrilled!

As and Bs here (6/7) though she missed out on an A in English by one point. I’m so bloody proud of her and I’m glad it’s now all over

AGirlHasNoCake · 22/08/2019 12:18

Well mixed bag here.

DfD failed everything except math. Not good.

DS did really well - passed everything - 3 Bs, 4 As, 3 A*s and an A^

ANd then a Level 4 in ENglish language Hmm . Now this is a major issue as he has been level 9 for 2 years, and his literature mark was a 7. So how he managed a4 is beyond me. We have requested a review. School said there were 15 kids with anomalies in their scores between expected vs achieved, and with big differences between Lit and Lang grades.

DS is devastated, as he hopes to study linguistics at Uni.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 22/08/2019 12:21

We knew DS2 would do well today (he's bright and very driven) - but we didn't expect his clean sweep of grade 9s (11 subjects).
School have said it's the best set of results they've ever had. Photos demanded for the local paper etc.
Not too shabby for a state school with no 6th form.
He's not entirely happy because he sat an FSMQ additional maths paper at the same time and 'only' got a B. Grin

ClarasZoo · 22/08/2019 12:24

does anyone know if AQA give the marks on the certificates? so if you got a grade 9, say, you could see if you just got a 9 or got 100%, say!

frugalkitty · 22/08/2019 12:24

Agirl similar here, DS was expecting an 8 for English Lang, maybe a 7 as spelling is N issue, but he got a 5 which was a shock. It's a pass and he isn't continuing on with English but it stands out as something very odd happened.

DeRigueurMortis · 22/08/2019 12:25

Agirl sorry to hear that.

It does sound very odd - it's a massive discrepancy. A review sounds really sensible.
