Hello All,

Welcome to thread 6 - results...

Last thread here:

Gcses 2019 support thread 5 http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/secondary/3610608-gcses-2019-support-thread-5

It's been a fantastically supportive set of threads to date with a diverse set of expectations and challenges (for both parents and children).

I expect this thread may be the most emotive for us all (crikey how did the time fly!!)

Good luck everyone Thanks

@ArthurtheCatsHumanSlave

That sounds very much like me with my A-Levels years ago - I got into Oxford, was supposed to get 4 As and got 4 Bs. 35 years later it still hurts although obviously I have a better perspective on it now.

I would just say - everyone around her will be telling her how brilliantly she's done (which she has) but from my experience that doesn't help. I always remember my mother was the only one to empathise and allow me to feel what I felt. I never got on that well with my mother but that really stands out.

I know how desperately you will want to make her feel better, but from one who knows, empathy and time are the only things that really make it better.

Sebw · 22/08/2019 11:00

Hi. Are you supposed to get your marks and grades as we only got one sheet with grades

Michaelahpurple · 22/08/2019 11:00

Squeak - must be hard navigating results with twins. Fingers crossed for the eng lit

Bimkom · 22/08/2019 11:02

Oh Arthur those wretched nines, they have put so much pressure on everybody. Those are a really good set of results. Can you tell her that even Oxford is treating 8s and 9s the same (at least currently) and only seem to care how many 8/9s they have. I am pretty sure they are doing that for all the league tables as well - so in terms of her school, she has contributed 7 entries to the top grade, so the teachers should be really happy with that and not feel let down at all!

eggsandwich · 22/08/2019 11:03

So proud of my dd she’s done so well.

9 in English literature and film studies
8 in English language
7 in Maths, Geography, Computer science
76 in science
6 in French

She’s now signed up for sixth form, thank god its over.
Hope everyone gets what they want and need.

Bimkom · 22/08/2019 11:06

Congratulations Orangecake123's little sister. Shame she is comparing herself to the others in her school. We are about to encounter this, one advantage I guess to a comp is that there is a much wider range.
Congratulations also TabbyStar - especially given the very difficult circumstances!

Saucery · 22/08/2019 11:07

I’m sorry, Frith I hope today isn’t too stressful for him. It’s hard when results are everywhere, but there’s many many routes to where you want to be and I hope your DS finds one.

Well done to everyone who got what they wanted or needed today. Every single one of our dc are absolute ⭐️ with all they have to juggle in this day and age.

Bimkom · 22/08/2019 11:09

Oh myrtleWilson - were the results she was disappointed in, in her A Level subjects?

KittyMcKitty · 22/08/2019 11:10

Thank you for your kind words Bimkom although looking at everyone’s results on here his definitely appear poor. Hopefully it’ll be a wake up call for him. I’m wondering if A levels are the right option but I guess in the absence of another plan they will do.

slalomsuki · 22/08/2019 11:11

Well done everybody

We have a range of 8/7/6's here and without exception each one is 1-3 marks off the next grade boundary. I'm now in a quandary as to whether to ask for the papers to be reviewed and remarked.

Bimkom · 22/08/2019 11:13

I was trying to congratulate everyone, but there are no so many fabulous results, I think I am going to miss someone if I keep trying, so congratulations all (twins sound doubly tricky, especially if they are competitive).
We haven't heard from a few of those who have been on our journey the whole year though. I hope that doesn't mean their results are disappointing.

SolitudeAtAltitude · 22/08/2019 11:13

Am sitting in the car waiting....

fabtasticmrpox · 22/08/2019 11:14

Some amazing results here well done everyone, but gosh the stress I'm sure it wasn't like this for me with my o levels.

Dd has done amazingly well, I waited outside and then got a tearful phone call to come in. I found her crying with the headmaster - happy tears thankfully.

Bimkom · 22/08/2019 11:19

KittyMcKitty - I think it is important to stress that the parents on this thread are a very select group of parents. Lets face it, most parents don't stress about this the way we have, that is why we ended up finding each other, because one couldn't admit to doing this in RL. Think about those figures in the Times yesterday from last year for the numbers who got lots of nines (it was a tiny percentage), and think about how many of the equivalent we have seen on this thread. If this was in any way a representative sample, you would need tens of thousands of parents on this thread.

berlinbabylon · 22/08/2019 11:20

DS is finally back from school. 4 x 8, 3 x 7, and a 5 for English lang. He was predicted a 7. Not sure whether to go for the remark or let it go. He got an 8 for English lit. Anyway, decent set of grades for someone who did very little work!

frugalkitty · 22/08/2019 11:20

DS did ok but not as well as he should have but that's what comes of not doing any real revision. He's fine for his a levels at college which is the main thing but I can't help feeling disappointed for him maybe it might be a kick up the lazy bum though He's got a good set of results though and he seems ok with them so that's good enough for me. Although I have realised that in two years I'll be doing the double, A levels for him and GCSEs for DD!

Congratulations to those who've done well. Fingers crossed for all that are still waiting x

Ligresa · 22/08/2019 11:21

Bloody hell arthur those are stellar results aren't they?

MoobaaMoobaa · 22/08/2019 11:21

Hello, was on the threads during exams.

DS has been worrying since the exams, although he in top sets, he's struggled with his MH these past 3 years, and totally falls apart in exams, teachers are always frustrated with his test and exam results.
His mock results showed he scrape maybe 2-3 GCSEs

He managed to pass all 9 GCSES. mainly 5s, 4 in English language(we were worried he'd have to resit). He's surprised and pleased and will be able to take the college course he's chosen.

Only problem now is his he's finding his friends and class mates have mainly got 7s,8s,9s. He's was starting to think he's useless again.

But I had already said to him 'comparison is the thief of joy' and not to take it to heart if others had higher grades.

I then reminded him of first thing this morning when he truly believed he'd failed nearly all of them and was dreading resits.
it's over now and he's on the course he wants, and that is all that should matter to him.

Fancyaruck · 22/08/2019 11:23

Just got back from my school, got to see many happy students and proud parents - some of who looked like they'd had less sleep than me (up at 4!). School as a whole did well, my two subjects were particularly good. So pleased - taught some lovely kids in this cohort.

For those considering remarks, as a teacher I'd only advise a remark if the current grade prevents your DC from moving on to whatever they want to do next - remarks are nowhere near as considered as they used to be.

Hoooo · 22/08/2019 11:25

Hi everyone!
My phone ran out of charge!

Ds did brilliantly;
2 x8s
1 x 7
2 x 6s
4 x 5s

8s are in his a level choices so very very pleased:)

Good luck all xxxx

doublechocadooberry · 22/08/2019 11:26

Well done some amazing results - Congratulations to your DC. Thinking of those who didn't get what they needed.

From memory, was a rushed and noisy phone-call.
7 x 1
6 x 3
5 x 3
4 x 1 (missed a paper due to ill health so chuffed to bits with a 4)
3 x 2 (expected)
Feel like the proudest mum in the world as the last 18 months have been really, really tough for him health-wise.

DS is really pleased and relieved he has achieved enough for the next move.

Ligresa · 22/08/2019 11:26

And kitty too! Those are truly excellent results. Very similar to my dd who worked really hard to get them.

I don't understand mumsnet sometimes. Sorry, i understand we all have different opinions on what is good or not but we really need to keep things in perspective and so do our dds.

Yes dd is disappointed with a 6 in classics but I can extrapolate ABC for her A levels which will get her where she wants to go.

berlinbabylon · 22/08/2019 11:35

I'd only advise a remark if the current grade prevents your DC from moving on to whatever they want to do next

DS was considering law A level and the college "recommends" a 6 in English lang. But as he got 8s in English lit, history and geography (and Spanish) they may over look the 5 as an aberration.

Very happy with 7s for Maths and science as he is more of a humanities boy.

AtiaoftheJulii · 22/08/2019 11:35

Dd did well, not as well as she'd hoped but there are extenuating circumstances!

Anyway, wanted to ask about mark breakdowns - we got the overall marks for edexcel and OCR, but no paper by paper breakdowns, and got no information at all about AQA subjects (which was 6 of her GCSEs). With my older kids we've had every detail of every paper - was wondering whether it was different due to the new GCSEs, or just school being a bit crap?

They've included a sheet to request marking reviews, but this is clearly impossible to decide if we don't have any info about marks to compare to grade boundaries!

AtiaoftheJulii · 22/08/2019 11:37

(To add, I'm not thinking of remarks, I think she needs to accept and move on, she is fine for next year, it's just a bit odd.)
