As the Tiffin results day looms, a second 2019 SW London grammars and indies thread

A new thread to avoid the doomsday scenario of running out of posts as envelopes are opened on Friday, waiting lists move (or don’t) and e-mails are opened on 1 March.

I think I didn't explain myself properly - take a school that gives out lots of meaningful scholarships and you know first hand that a few of them are going to be declined - do the school just roll the money over for the next year?

Jimjam68 · 28/02/2019 10:06

I would assume they over offer scholarships each year as they do with non scholarship places and expect to roughly end up with the right amount.

1ndig0 · 28/02/2019 10:34

I think the scholarships are more a marketing tool really. For instance, I think there are 12 schools in the London Girls’ Consortium and you can apply to as many as you like via the same exam paper. So a school that requires a lower pass mark for entry, will be very aware if a candidate has a score that would mean they would get a place at say, G&L. They offer the scholarship as an extra incentive to choose their school over the one with the more academic reputation, whereas the so-called “top” schools don’t need to offer academic scholarships at all. They only offer bursaries.

1ndig0 · 28/02/2019 10:36

Also, I guess if nobody takes up the scholarships, the schools wouldn’t care. It just means they have more full-fee paying pupils.

ananas2019 · 28/02/2019 10:41

It really depends because SPGS also offers academic scholarship.

ananas2019 · 28/02/2019 10:42

Also SHHS which is pretty selective and academic.

Glaciferous · 28/02/2019 10:45

It doesn't offer academic scholarships for the MIV, though, only music scholarships at 11+.

Glaciferous · 28/02/2019 10:45

Sorry, that was re SPGS.

1ndig0 · 28/02/2019 10:46

In the G&L info I have it says they offer 1 music scholarship - that’s it. Confused

PHS seem to offer quite a few though. I’m not aware of any at LU, though lots are there on bursary / part-bursary awards.

ananas2019 · 28/02/2019 10:52

Oh and WHS also offers academic scholarship. I believe lately have become even more selective or hard to get in than SPGS.

ChristopherTracy · 28/02/2019 12:24

Yes these are academic scholarships designed to tempt pupils away from the grammars.

Jimjam68 · 28/02/2019 12:43

I’m not sure 5% off fees goes a long way to tempt people away from grammars tbh. It’s more about the “honour” and recognition of great performance in the 11+, at some schools, including WHS,anyway.

FlumePlume · 28/02/2019 13:09

I know SPGS doesn’t do academic scholarships and WHS does up to a maximum of 20% (and usually lower). I think the less sought after schools are more generous - I know of at least one 50% scholarship offer from, and quite a few 20% ones, from Sutton High.

If you take the Putney, Barnes, Wimbledon, Fulham, Hammersmith and surrounding areas as is the zone that’s mainly been discussed on this thread, there are so many “top” girls options at 11 plus - SPGS, G&L, PHS, WHS, NHEHS, Surbiton, FHS - but what is there for boys? KCS is perhaps slightly more of a realistic option now that it’s increased its 11 plus intake, but apart from that, it’s just LU, KGS, Ibstock or Kew House which are co-ed anyway. St Paul’s Boys only accept about 10 at 11 plus. Otherwise, you have to go miles out on a coach to somewhere like Hampton or Reeds. Seems crazy to me.

1ndig0 · 28/02/2019 15:24

Just turned down the places at SPGS and PHS. So that’s that then, no turning back. Confused

Kawasaki · 28/02/2019 15:53

What a lost for SPGS 1ndig0 😩
Could I ask who will be joining SPGS with us this Sept.?

1ndig0 · 28/02/2019 16:10

It was a hard one to turn down Kawasaki, it really was. Some people may think we’re mad and let’s hope it doesn’t turn out to be true!

JugglingMadly · 28/02/2019 17:06

Well done @1ndig0 - decision made!

Still debating here ..... but determined to close out tomorrow.

littlemisslucky2 · 28/02/2019 17:26

Posted forms off today and paid deposit. Feels sad rejecting the other offer (Surbiton) but definitely made the right decision.

KaliforniaDreamz · 28/02/2019 17:57

we've acepted the SHS offer - decision made easy by fact IT WAS ONLY OFFER HAHA

now need to sell kidney

1ndig0 · 28/02/2019 18:13

One offer is all you need Kalifornia Grin.
Congrats!

JugglingMadly · 28/02/2019 18:24

Well done @littlemisslucky2 and @KaliforniaDreamz - more decisions made!
I will be so relieved when it's over.
Turning down seems to be almost as hard as accepting ......

Jimjam68 · 28/02/2019 18:34

We have also confirmed we are accepting WHS and have let the other offers go. We decided holding out for Tiffin when in our hearts we won’t send DD there was just prolonging the agony, and DD is very happy and relieved that we will no longer be quizzing her about WHS vs Tiffin and her not wanting to let us down in some way. Too much pressure on young shoulders. Has anyone on this thread had an offer from WHS off the waitlist yet? I have a friend desperately hoping. I know someone up thread said it’s moving but wondered if anyone knew how much movement?

Geogra · 28/02/2019 18:35

Congratulations to everyone on their offers/acceptances. Lots of children with only waiting list/no offers at our school and I hope the lists really do start moving tomorrow. Several schools have gone to lists already but quite a few that have not.

Geogra · 28/02/2019 18:37

Wimbledon have made offers from the waiting list this week
