Loving your lawn, Sost and feeling the pain of such an exorbitant cost for travel!

Hoping all the sixth-form starters enjoy it and that paths become clear for those disappointed about their options. 16-year olds do not need this sort of stress, do they??!!

Oratory1 · 29/08/2018 19:08

Agree Alevel, it will depend very much on the subject she wants to do and type of Uni. Looking at a sample of university websites should make it clearer

Stickerrocks · 29/08/2018 19:17

university.which.co.uk/advice/a-level-choices/what-a-levels-do-you-need-to-study-psychology

I hope this link works. I think the golden rule is to take the subjects that you truly enjoy and will get the highest grades in, which may be FM in your DD'S case, especially if she may want to take maths. However, the psychology, biology, maths combo does sound like a good. Psychology isn't a pre-requisite for a degree in it, so she could even swap that one out.

In an update to my 17.15 post, we've now established that she forgot to enrol for the EPQ. Hopefully this is something she can do later.

Ok, thanks for all your help. Looks like we'll have to do some more research into specific unis. The tutor who enrolled her said maths/fm definitely count as 2, but I guess he would Hmm

Oratory1 · 29/08/2018 19:57

It definitely counts as two a levels but for some courses/unis it’s considered too narrow a selection with just one other subject hence the needs for 4 if you do further maths. Sorry I can’t remember which this applies too but hopefully you can find out. It may just be a small number of courses.

Witchend · 29/08/2018 20:10

AlevelConfusion
Dd1 started with 4 but dropped down to 3 including further maths. Obviously it depends on what she wants to do at uni, (dd1 wants to do maths) but she checked very thoroughly and it wasn't a problem at any of the unis she was asking. Her friend is off to Oxford with 3 A-levels including further maths to read maths.

LooseAtTheSeams · 29/08/2018 21:28

Lovely lawn Sostenueto - mimes is mostly weds!
Maths and FM are separate A levels except for medicine, I believe.

HesMyLobster · 29/08/2018 21:29

Alevelconfusion we have been researching psychology degrees at different universities as my DD is hoping to do it.
Some offer psychology as a BA, these don't tend to require specific subjects.
DD however is only interested in doing it as a BSc (which will facilitate becoming a practising psychologist) these courses all seem to require 2 science A Levels or psychology plus at least one science.

HesMyLobster · 29/08/2018 21:33

Sostenuto your lawn looks fabulously lush. Ours looks more like hay still.

DD has been "office appropriate clothes" shopping.
We still need to get shoes and a bag big enough to fit a folder. I'm arguing for a sensible backpack/rucksack but she's adamant she wants a handbag style one if anybody has seen any nice big ones?

Stickerrocks · 29/08/2018 21:41

Well a week ago we were twisting our knickers about results day, but our stress can't possible compare to my students this week. On Friday I'm due to set a 4 hour mock exam for their final subject at 11am which must be in the post by 4pm. At midday approximately 90% of my class will receive an email from their Professional Body giving them the real results of the 2 other exams which they sat last month. Would anyone like to take my place, as typically there is only 75% pass rate and I have to keep them focused through the agony & ecstasy.

DD went to a local outlet centre and thought a Fiorelli leather tote at a huge discount. She also has 2 Fjallraven Kanken backpacks, one of which I managed to get at 50% off in John Lewis last week. I definitely prefer the backpack for practicality.

HesMyLobster I always find TKMaxx have a really good bag selection, I got DD one there for Uni which could fit A4 folders but not a rucksack, it was actually really nice and is still going strong after a year so good quality as well.

Loose you are right medicine don't count maths and FM as seperate.

PeggyIsInTheNarrative · 29/08/2018 22:39

HesMyLobster I'm not sure that you do need a BSc rather than a BA in Psychology to become a practitioner psychologist. You need a degree accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS).

We had a lot of umming and ahhing about subjects for psychology. DS is keeping his options open with maths and English plus psychology. Biology would be better in theory but English is better for him. He may get 4 weeks into the A level and decide he doesn’t like psychology at all!
Stickerrocks I feel for you!

PeggyIsInTheNarrative · 30/08/2018 08:40

Psychology A level is like Law A level, not required fir a degree. Biology would leave options like Neurosciences open as well as Psychology BSc.

PeggyIsInTheNarrative · 30/08/2018 08:42

Sorry that was biology instead of psychology noy instead of English which is good for psychology degree.

brainmelt · 30/08/2018 08:55

sost you get the award to the most unbelievable Disney lawn!

LimitIsUp · 30/08/2018 12:27

Hello all - name change here (remember me as three random letters and 'aswas') sorry!

Well done Sticker on dd being accepted into developmental squad for tennis - she must be very pleased. My dd's natural reticence took over and she bottled it decided not to participate in football trials. I think that was probably a good call - she has to train with current football team two evenings each week plus a match every Saturday morning so she doesn't need to be doing more of the same but for a college team. Hopefully she will take the opportunity to expand her interests and do something different at college

Registered at Sixth form college today and it has become very real for dd and she's having a bit of a wobble about it all....bit worried and have contacted her psychologist for a pre college counselling session next week

LimitIsUp · 30/08/2018 12:28

Agree - green and verdant lawn Sost !

AlevelConfusion · 30/08/2018 13:13

Sostenueto · 30/08/2018 13:17

AlexanderHamilton · 30/08/2018 13:19
