Quite honestly she used to try hard in art but on the whole she is not really arty. She enjoys doing it when she has time as it relaxes her and she loves collage etc but she is struggling yo do the work now because if all other GCSEs and time is precious.

mmzz · 20/02/2018 22:48

Sostenueto - yes, thanks. Price is 310 and ISBN is 1510404805 if anyone reading this next year, is interested!
I've got it in my Amazon basket and I'm toying with the idea of buying a couple of the Mr Bruff English Lit revision guides too. They look good, but I made the mistake of buying the CGP ones before i'd heard of Mr Bruff and now i'm not sure if its worth having both. Of course, DS thinks they will be helpful.

I've spent a fortune on text books and revision guides this year. Luckily DS2 wants to do the same subjects, so at least they'll get double use.

sostenuto I can see it, the loss, feeling lost, is there, thanks for the programme notes Smile

Sostenueto · 21/02/2018 06:19

Be careful mmzz not to buy too many guides because DC may get overwhelmed by so much different advice. I think a couple of different ones OK but too much information can be a bad thing too IMO.

LooseAtTheSeams · 21/02/2018 07:30

That's good advice sostenueto - although it's worth having a look around as the format of the CGP books doesn't suit everyone.
Your dgd's art piece looks great to me! DS always enjoyed art and is good at drawing but doesn't like doing the gcse and hasn't got to grips with the new requirements so instead of a bit of a rest after the art exam he's going to have some busy weekends finishing off coursework!

mmzz · 21/02/2018 07:55

With hindsight, the CGP books are good for science revision, but Mr Bruff is better for English Lit and Mr Salles for English Language.

I haven't found anything that's really good for History or Geography.

MFL it's just about vocab and verb tables, isn't it?

I'm going to try to be hands off now. DS has what he needs, he's got a revision timetable and now he just needs to do it.

Thanks looseFlowers her art teacher just rates her a 6. She did fantastic pen work on envelopes will try to get pics of more of her work.
Agree mmzz Mr Salle for eng lang. Mr bruff for eng lit. Not sure what to recommend for geography as dgd reads so much around subject and not sure if she actually uses a revision guide.

Its amazing how much of a difference a teacher makes to a subject. DS used to read geography books for interest before he took the GCSE. He had a really inspirational teacher for the first two terms, and he continued to really enjoy the subject. Then the teacher left, and the replacement teacher does not connect that well with the students and Ds's grades - and interest - dropped like a stone.
Two years ago, I expected DS to want to do it for A level, but now he can't wait to get away from the subject, and Ds2 is thinking hard about whether he wants to risk getting the same teacher if he takes Geography for GCSE.

I think teachers do make all the difference - the problem is that children seem to relate in different ways to teachers too. My DD had an inspirational Chemistry teacher last year and she really made a difference...DD finds the new Chemistry teaches in a monotone style (listen and follow directions)and has found the classes boring.....yet some of DD's friends prefer this style of teaching. Oddly enough DD's Physics teacher on the surface would appear to be boring but he teaches in an interactive way which my DD prefers.

Sostenueto · 21/02/2018 12:11

Dgds geography teacher young and new last year. But dgd such a favourite with whole of geography department because she is so quiet and unassuming. I remember head of department coming up to her at yr 9 parent evening in front of everyone saying in a joking way ' you have been noticed now! ' and my dgd going scarlet! She has won geography prize every single year and at this parent evening the hod was joking again with her because she only got 99% on mock instead if 100%. He came up to me in the car and said ' your dgd a credit to your family and we will try our up most to get her to Oxbridge.' Well it was my turn to go red but I was so so proud!

Sostenueto · 21/02/2018 12:13

Physics teacher puts dgd to sleep in class she says. He is boring but she's not that keen on physics anyway. Chemistry teacher inspiring and she makes extra effort for teacher and biology teacher OK in dgds opinion.

Sostenueto · 21/02/2018 12:21

Surprising how much of the sciences are in geography.

mmzz · 21/02/2018 12:59

Geography IS a science, isn't it?

OP posts:
Sostenueto · 21/02/2018 14:06

I thought it was classed as humanities? Mind you lot of crossover with biology and chemistry. And maths for stats etc. Confused

Sostenueto · 21/02/2018 14:06

In ebacc geography and history humanities I think.

mmzz · 21/02/2018 14:36

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geography Geography is a field of science devoted to the study of the lands, the features, the inhabitants, and the phenomena of Earth.

Most universities team it with "environmental science" or Earth Science.

I think its a bit of both, but what is science? Its the systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment. You hypothesise and then test your theories. isn't that what geographers do? They don't try to read or interpret what people think or feel, or to create music or design - that's the arts faculty's job.

Well you learn something new everyday! Blush

Teenmum60 · 21/02/2018 15:51

Feeling I deserve a Halo having agreed to do my DD's job (hopefully just 2 Saturdays a month) in the run up/during her exams. I start my training on Saturday Hmm. I didnt want her to loose the job ...and they definitely need someone to do the job whilst she is doing her exams/study....fortunately its work from home.

Sostenueto · 21/02/2018 16:32

Halogiven to teenmum but perhapsGinWine better?!

LooseAtTheSeams · 21/02/2018 16:33

Well, there's so much going on after school that all the important stuff is starting to clash! DS1 had an extra computer session for tomorrow (the coding exam that isn't, so to speak) but now it clashes with an unexpected chemistry exam (a mock for the mock next month?!) and I have had to resort to emailing the school to ask which one he should go to!
But the good news is that composition 2 is definitely finished. Phew!

BlueBelle123 · 21/02/2018 16:34

Teenmum make sure you don't get your DD the sackWink. I presume she will still be the one being paid Smile.........its a very kind thing you are doing I hope your DD appreciates your efforts!

Oddsocks15 · 21/02/2018 17:34

mmzz - two years ago I would have put money on my DD doing geography at A level. No change of teacher for her but her interest level has dropped. Her geography teacher still trying to persuade DD to take it at A level but DD not having any of it and DD adores her geography teacher!!

Interview for 6th form today, DD has enough points based on predicted grades to get in and no problems with her behaviour (only at home!!)

Teenmum60 · 21/02/2018 18:06

Looks like we are off to see GP again DD really struggling with random chronic pain again - this time with her hip and she's also been getting a rash (we thought it was maybe a reaction to a chemical after Chemistry lesson last time). Rash appeared again this week with no Chemistry lesson. Probably need some proper allergy tests done.

Oddsocks15 · 21/02/2018 18:19

Teen sorry to hear that Sad hopefully Dr will get it sorted
