Sostenueto That is the opposite of what DD's school do....I requested DD dropped French and they refused even though she got an E at the end of the summer exams...they are letting parents make a choice now if the girls got an E/F in French in the mocks (which I thought was fair-because some girls like my DD had made requests and were refused).

I think allot of the grammar schools have put pressure on 1st year A level students to drop subjects (or leave) if their grades are poor at the end of year 12. Some of this seems to happen with heavily tutored children who get through GCSE's with good grades but when it comes to A level its so much harder.

I was reading a thread about how Edexcel seem to make the questions wordier to trip students up ...this was certainly the case with DD's Chemistry mock paper which was last years exam paper.

Sostenueto · 20/02/2018 10:42

It really is happening as I just turned on "the Wright stuff" on catchup and they were reading same article out of newspaper!

Sostenueto · 20/02/2018 10:45

Wordier questions does not surprise me at all. Anything that can be done to separate the top from the average, its all disgusting! These new exams will put an even bigger divide between social classes. I always said give it a couple of years and none will look at anyone below a 7SadAngry

Sostenueto · 20/02/2018 10:47

Teenmum its really unfair!

TheDonald · 20/02/2018 11:27

Just catching up on the thread. This is the RS revision guide dd bought from school. It was quite expensive despite school bulk buying because it's got all the religions in one book even though they only do two.

Dd had to do compulsory RS even though it isn't a religious school. She has decided not to do any revision for it so I've no idea why she wanted this bookConfused

It may be the same one, not sure thedonald that my dgd had issued until I pick her up tonight. I know the price in a shop is £15 and school charge £7.50.

BlueBelle123 · 20/02/2018 11:43

theDonald if she's anything like my DD she just likes new things even if it is a book that she will never read!!!Hmm

TheDonald · 20/02/2018 11:46

Grin Yes bluebelle you are probably right!

Or maybe she thinks that the more money I spend the better her results will be! If only it were that simple! And if only I had enough money!

Sostenueto · 20/02/2018 12:36

I make sure dgd uses all the books, revision guides, exam questions. Revision cards I buy her because for everyone of those bought I have had to do without something and she knows this very well.

Your welcome mmzzFlowers

Teen Nothing in the general ballot for DD & I yet, but we also have a chance through the tennis club as well. Which court/day have you got?

DoNotBringLulu · 20/02/2018 19:03

Oh yes, we have that study guide as well. I have forked out for a lot of study guides, but they are succinct and a good resource.

Sostenueto I hope that newspaper article is not correct how awful....my ds's school has DEAR (drop everything and read) every day no kindles allowed and they can read what they want. The Headteacher said it's a good idea due to increased reading skill required for the GCSEs.

My ds missed his mock German today, he was sick, has a headache and feels under the weather. They can rearrange the mock.

He came home from school yesterday, said it was depressing and sad following the sudden death of the year 11 Sad

Sostenueto · 20/02/2018 19:04

If you were an art teacher how would you rate thus multimedia piece on the new 9-1?

Honest answers please!Smile

Sostenueto · 20/02/2018 19:08

Oh my dear! Dontbringlulu that is so sad! I expect that has upset the whole year and what a tragedy and the poor parents too!Flowers

Teenmum60 · 20/02/2018 19:47

Dontbringlulu - it must be so difficult for all the children ...

I love the idea of DEAR - I was successful for about 6 months in getting DD to read the children's newspaper that used to be printed (not sure whether it is issued anymore)...but she was 11/12 years old. She still loves books but I think reading sort of went pear shaped when she went over to Kindle. One of her dads strong points is reading - he was still reading to her at bedtime when she was 13 years old (Arthur Ransome books) he's just got into Harry Potter - so DD is over the moon because he is buying all the illustrated books as they are released (she has the normal books).

Stickerrocks - We managed to get tickets for Thursday 5th - Court 1 which is great (2nd round) - we went on the first day in 2016 and were lucky to experience the electric atmosphere of the Marcus Willis match (ended up pulling DD out of school but it was worth it). I just love the atmosphere - I've only done the ballot a few times - always forget because its so near Xmas but managed to get tickets each time.

Teenmum60 · 20/02/2018 19:49

Sostenueto - I'm useless with ART but it looks good to me ....

Sostenueto · 20/02/2018 20:11

Thanks teenmum don't worry its not me! Its a piece of unfinished work my dgd binned a while back but I fished it out cos I thought it wasn't too bad with some tweaking. She used mixed materials for it.

Sostenueto · 20/02/2018 20:21

Mmzz have you found book?

Stickerrocks · 20/02/2018 21:32

Teen my best match was in the front row on centre when Heather Watson played Serena and we were opposite their chairs. Having Serena prowling inches away from me when she had a match point against her was unbelievable. We had no.2 on a wet Saturday 2 years ago, then again on a wet Wednesday with Judy Murray in front of us.

Stickerrocks · 20/02/2018 21:34

Don't I've seen the tributes - heart breaking. Your DS may be a big brave teenager facing his GCSEs, but sometimes they just need a hug & reassurance from their mum.

drummersmum · 20/02/2018 22:07

teenmum we are going mid-april... I forgot about Wimbledon ballot. I manage to forget every year. Brrrr.
lulu ouch Flowers
sostenuto my, that is so expressionist and indeed expressive. It's representing the agony of creation, surely... ? She's good and most importantly, bold.

Sostenueto · 20/02/2018 22:22

Well drummer think it was about the loss of creation or rather memory. She was trying to depict dementia suffered by someone who was creative but could no longer do it anymore.
