Red weather warning for tomorrow for wind.
What are you supposed to do when the met office/news is telling you to stay at home but your workplace expects you in?

oh crickey, it's been updated again!! It was yellow yesterday updated to Amber and now red for the central belt! How do you travel and are you able to work from home? There's already talk of limiting public transport services in the worst affected areas.

NessaSmith · 23/01/2025 11:05

So annoying, can you work from home? If so I'd send the weather warning to your boss.

I have plans tomorrow I grumpily am going to have to cancel now it's red. Sigh.

HPandthelastwish · 23/01/2025 11:10

What is your work? If it is something where you would be missed Doctor / Nurse / Carer I'd probably travel in early and hang around until safe to return home. Taking clothes / food / book and hunker down - as I don't have childcare issues.

If your work can be done from home I'd be telling them I'm not coming in due to the weather and reminding them my safety at work was their responsibility.

Fortunately my employer is not an arse and has already sent an email out telling staff to work from home if they can and if they can't to pause their work and do some online training etc instead and to not take unnecessary risks in our work or homelives. And that everyone's safety is their priority.

DeepfriedPizza · 23/01/2025 11:11

I am not in a job where home working is possible. Boss has been told, not interested.

I have plans tomorrow night too to see a band and I'll be annoyed if I miss it but I'll just miss it if required.

what's your alternative? book a day off as leave, phone in sick, hope the roads are so bad you can't get there??
I think it says a lot about a company in circumstances like this but it really does depend what you do for a job. Our office has just had an email to say Glasgow and Edinburgh will be closed tomorrow and to all work from home, which we're lucky we can do. I expect some school closures wil get announced as the day goes on, likewise small independent businesses, anyone who works outdoors on construction sites etc probably won't be tomorrow, but in some jobs such as caring and medical professions I think you have to accept that you're expected in come what may!

DeepfriedPizza · 23/01/2025 11:27

There are only 2 people who do my job. Other one is on actual holiday so I am expected to go in. They just aren't interested in listening to reason.
It is not a life saving or important field that I work in, It's a small business that sells things but they are more intersted in making money than safety.

If the schools get closed I am going to keep getting on at them.

Do you drive? A red weather warning is very serious, travelling (whether by car or otherwise) in a red weather warning is a risk to life. Would you be willing to have tomorrow off as unpaid leave? If they dig their heels in even upon your offer of unpaid leave, then call in sick.

MiddleAgedDread · 23/01/2025 12:52

That’s East Lothian schools closed and at least one Edinburgh independent that I know of. I suspect others will follow now they’ve had time to hold meetings etc.

DeepfriedPizza · 23/01/2025 13:00

Glasgow and Ayrshire schools are closed. Ours aren't...yet.

I do drive and I know it's dangerous to drive in weather warnings. The other people in my work all travel from 45 mins away and they will probably still come in. I am only 10 mins away so they will say "If wee Jimmy can make it in, so can you" me saying that wee Jimmy is a martyr won't go down well.

According to the BBC: First Minister John Swinney told parliament that Police Scotland would issue a formal "do not travel" advisory notice shortly and that the government's resilience and emergency system (SGoRR) had been activated.

So if the Police issue a formal advisory not to travel surely businesses have to take this into account for their workforce?

Possimpible · 23/01/2025 14:09

I'm pretty worried about this, DH and I work in the local hospital so we'll both be expected in (different shifts so can't even travel together). The dog will be home alone and I can't even pop home at lunch as planned. Unfortunately no childcare issues or I'd probably get the day off.

DeepfriedPizza · 23/01/2025 14:14

We're closing!

MiddleAgedDread · 23/01/2025 14:35

No Scotrail trains running at all tomorrow and most of the longer distance operators e.g. cross country and LNER aren't running north of leeds or york! I think we should have a national day off to all stay in bed!

StrongTea · 23/01/2025 14:47

All funerals and cremations in my council area are cancelled tomorrow. All schools closed.

Livein2025 · 23/01/2025 14:57

Some of the recent weather warnings have felt like overkill - the last storm didn’t hit us too badly - a bit more windier than a wet and windy Scottish winter’s day. But this one seems to be a bit of a monster so might put some new batteries in a few torches and move stuff off the window sills. I hope it doesn’t wreak too much havoc. Stay safe everyone.

sugardust90 · 23/01/2025 15:01

I'm a carer so unfortunately I don't have a choice! Obviously can't work from home 🤣 although I could be taking my last breath and my work would still expect me to come in lol. So unfortunately I'm going to have to travel I just hope it's not as bad as they're making out. Any other carers on here in the same position?!

stormacoming · 23/01/2025 15:09

My flight out of Edinburgh still hasn't been cancelled 😳

MiddleAgedDread · 23/01/2025 15:35

ooh good call on charging things @Livein2025 !! 🔦

Loonyluna16 · 23/01/2025 15:45

My partner works in construction and his boss has told them under no circumstances are they to be off tomorrow he fully expects them out and to work their full shift. I’m absolutely worried sick. 😫

Just adding that we’re central belt Scotland as well and so is site so slap bang in the middle of the red 😩

Timeandtune · 23/01/2025 15:50

All Fife schools closed.

GrouchyKiwi · 23/01/2025 15:51

@Loonyluna16 I wonder if it's worth asking the council for advice? Might be a weird idea, dunno.

PickAChew · 23/01/2025 15:53

Council or ACAS. They can't be expected to do such work in such dangerous conditions. Even if they're not up a height, stuff could be flying everywhere.

LikeABat · 23/01/2025 15:56

@Loonyluna16 Law may be different in Scotland but if an employer is negligent and someone is killed or injured at work that is a criminal offence with possible jail term.
