Hows everyone's kids getting on with their exams / studying?

DDs first Higher exam is D&M I think. She's been busy working on past papers but feels fairly confident. She is least confident about Chemistry.

Oh it's dark but it's great! My son is doing the Duffy poetry for SST. Some of them are totally naff in comparison.

motheronthedancefloor · 28/04/2024 21:19

bloody love dulce et decorum est

DD is doing Norman McCaig - again - both N5 and Higher.

Is it only my child that revises at all the odd times? Writing essays at 11pm, doing past paper questions into the small hours. I can't decide if it's counter productive to encourage him into a more normal timetable, as I suspect he's actually more engaged and fired up at the times he's self-selecting

Not just your child! My DD1 too. My DD 2 revises at “normal” hours. But my DD 1 reminds me of myself at her age. I was a night owl too. I’m old now so in bed by 10.

DownWithThisKindOfThing · 28/04/2024 22:39

I did Norman McCaig for my standard grade set text in 1989! Neither of mine have done that. Boy 1 did Carol Ann Duffy for N5 and Liz Lochead for higher and the youngest is doing Tally’s Blood

weebarra · 29/04/2024 08:00

Oh I love Dulce too! I did Edwin Morgan back in the day - remember our CSYS class going to the Mitchell library to see him read.
DS1 did Tally's blood for Nat 5, he really enjoyed it.
He's also just taken up guitar to intersperse with studying.

DC here doing highers. Geography last week seems to have gone OK and there are two exams later this week. It is such a stressful time for them.

motheronthedancefloor · 29/04/2024 10:54

I prefer Sassoon's 'suicide in the trenches' though.

DD has one exam this week - D&M Higher, then two exams next week.

We've also just heard she might have to change her S6 timetable due to subject clashes which is a concern because the options at her school are so limited, and also lots of teacher absence so we dont know what else she could study instead.

First one tomorrow, Modern Studies. DD feeling relatively confident about this one - we've been doing flash cards every evening for the last few days, so hoping it pays off. Then Drama on Friday - this is the one she's been finding harder than she thought it would be; performance section last month was fine but the written is surprisingly challenging!

Cluelessaf · 29/04/2024 22:53

Modern studies for us too tomorrow.

cushionfiend · 29/04/2024 23:39

@Cluelessaf Good luck and solidarity!

YouBelongWithMe · 30/04/2024 01:22

Good luck to all the Modern Studiers tomorrow!

My son is currently splitting his time in half between Maths and English. Will rotate Chemistry in after the English exam.

Such a hard, stressful time!

Misthios · 30/04/2024 08:07

DS has his first exam of the period today with Moddie, seems quite confident but really doesn't want to see a question on the additional member system in the section on Scottish democracy.

I am invigilating the same Moddie exam at a different school so will see the paper at the same time as he does. Good luck to all sitting it today!

cushionfiend · 30/04/2024 09:05

@Misthios interesting that you're an invigilator and get to see the paper. Hope it all goes okay!

StrictlyPrue · 30/04/2024 09:55

Also Modern Studies N5 in this house today and also hoping there is no question on the AMS! Feel like I could sit it myself today after helping with revision so much, my DD struggles so really hoping she doesn't panic. Also Drama on Friday and agree with above that it is so much harder than people expect.

Misthios · 30/04/2024 10:05

DS has a hellish week, moddie today, business tomorrow, then both maths and drama on friday.

Exactly same for us @Misthios, absolute nightmare.

Absolutely! DD has her higher drama on Friday. There’s so much to learn. People don’t understand what it involves.

cushionfiend · 30/04/2024 11:20

@StrictlyPrue @Misthios Yikes, that IS a hellish week! Sounds really exhausting and stressful, hope everyone is ok.

Thanks @cushionfiend , for a DD who really struggles it is the worst! English next Tuesday and had no time to revise for that. That will be the weekend! Roll on end of next week when she is finished.

Misthios · 30/04/2024 12:02

Yes after this week DS has English on the 7th, RMPS on the 10th and Biology is his last one on the 15th May. School exam leave runs for another 10 days - 2 weeks after that so we are taking advantage and having a week away as a family.

theferry · 30/04/2024 14:57

Thankfully DD has her exams spread out from Friday until 21 May. Much better than N5s was.

Misthios · 30/04/2024 17:22

DS quite happy with Modern Studies paper, not a mention of the additional member system anywhere.

cushionfiend · 30/04/2024 17:33

Yes, DD also felt Mods paper went well - got to use all the UN/EU stats we'd been doing in those bloody flash cards!

YouBelongWithMe · 30/04/2024 22:40

Another one over for many of your kids! Hurrah.

We're still plodding away with English and Maths. He does Maths during the day and saves English for when I'm home - we've only just finished 😭 another poem revised and essay written. Next Thurs can't come quick enough.

My son is diabetic and having his insulin pump fitted the day before his H Chemistry exam. Really not ideal but it's the only time we were offers and we figured it was worth going for. Hope it doesn't impact him too much.
