XL bully dogs and Scotland

Another blinder by our "wonderful" government. I was not aware that the ban on these awful chav beast dogs only applied in England and Wales. No legislation to ban/restrict them in Scotland.

Some dim woman who runs a "bullie rescue" says she has been "inundated". Isn't that just marvellous.

Yep, I was aware because locally we already have a significant issue with these dogs.

I was walking to meet a friend last week it was 6pm so it was dark. I was aware of a young lad with one of these dogs ahead of me so I kept my distance. However he then stopped at a grassy bit for the dog to have a wee and I couldn't reasonably do anything other than continue to walk. There was no a grass verge between the pavement and the road and no pavement on the other side to cross to.

To give him credit, the lad could see I was wary about passing and attempted to drag the large dog further onto the grass while saying to me that he's fine... The dog wasn't fine though, it was staring at me and tugging in my direction whilst this lad was holding it back.

I ended up just hurrying past but if the dog had decided to go for me (already showing potential aggression) he'd have had no chance of controlling it.

It's all good though as presume Humza doesn't live near where these dogs are the ultimate accessory for 16 year old wide boys.

CoatOfArms · 22/12/2023 08:46

I think everyone has a horror story about these animals. It's pure luck that there hasn't been a fatality in Scotland so far, it's just a matter of time. Especially if we are to be "inundated" with adult, poorly trained animals which people in England don't want.

Even better, the woman is raising money to improve these kennels - and by Christ, do they need improving! Let's hope they are made fit for purpose, far more secure, and the irresponsible and stupid owner isn't the one in charge of ensuring that any staff and visitors are kept safe ...

It’s very sad for all these dogs, it’s not their fault they’ve been bred. I’ve seen a couple of local facebooks posts for people asking somebody to take on their dogs, we are in South England. I do wonder what’s going to happen, owners won’t be able to get insurance or see vets as they are going to be banned soon, what’s going to happen if they are ill. Hopefully if they are registered vets will still see them, but nothing that I’ve read implies this.

CoatOfArms · 22/12/2023 08:59

@Mindymomo there is no requirement for registration or neutering or muzzling or the rest of it in Scotland so a lot of them will come here. I don't think many of the people who are attracted by these "bull breed" are the sorts of people who bother with insurance.

I keep seeing a Facebook page asking people in NI I think it is to adopt them.

Not sure everyone else wants them shipping over in bulk.

Superfans · 22/12/2023 09:34

These dogs are terrifying. I’m a HCP who has to do home visits (in Scotland) went into a house with one, felt very intimidated. Advised by management can’t treat patient differently as discriminatory. The SNP are more focused on foreign affairs than the safety of the Scottish population. They are waiting for a death to take action. Implement a ban now.

BigBoysDontCry · 22/12/2023 09:38

No doubt when something does happen it will be Westminster fault for banning them and causing the "English" dogs to come here and cause bother whilst the Scottish dogs being Scottish are therefore different and fine....

MintJulia · 22/12/2023 09:42

@Mindymomo Rationally, a lot of dogs will be PTS because their owners are unable or unwilling to pay for neutering/chipping and registration..

I suspect a lot of them will be dumped in the new year and the authorities will have to assume responsibility and have them destroyed. It's horrible but there is no alternative. They represent too great a danger to the general public.

PuttingDownRoots · 22/12/2023 09:43

If they truly love dogs the best thing to do will be to make sure no more puppies of the breed are born, so they don't have to live restricted lives or be put down in the future.

CoatOfArms · 22/12/2023 09:49

Agree to the neutering but these "Bullie Rescue" charities are not professional organisations with access to vets. They are one wee woman in her front room and using Facebook to speak to her "supporters". It's not about neutering, it's about fobbing these animals off as quickly as possible.

I too was horrified to discover this morning that this ban doesn't apply in Scotland. I thought I was really good at spotting the (numerous) occasions when the media says UK but means England and maybe Wales if it happens to be the same. Apparently I'm not as good as I thought!

Obviously scotgov can't possibly do anything the same as England 🙄 So maybe instead they could go down the owner licensing route, and then long term we will see whether licensing or banning is the better method.

Santiagopink · 22/12/2023 10:29

If I had the money I'd adopt all these dogs and pay to have them put down myself. Abandoning them is utter cruelty, and the stress they go through in rehoming is not fair on the dog given how loyal they are, and will make them more likely to react aggressively. The power these dogs have is immense, even the small ones. And the 5 bully owners I know of couldn't control a jack Russel let alone these tanks. Actually one of them is even called Tank.

puncheur · 22/12/2023 14:00

Have there been any deaths/injuries caused by these kind of dogs in Scotland? If not, then I’m not sure why the Scottish government would pass legislation to ban them.

CoatOfArms · 22/12/2023 14:17

Right, because Scottish XL bulldogs and Scottish XL bulldog owners are completely different from those south of the border.

Jeezo.

listen to yourself

JL690 · 22/12/2023 17:12

I am wary of most dogs but seeing one of these will terrify me. Why has the SNP not banned them in Scotland? Just to be different to England. Shower of petty, ignorant, z list politicians.

BigBoysDontCry · 22/12/2023 17:17

Because it's not a vote getter in the SNP heartlands.

After some kids on our estate were chased by one off leash, we were advised by the dog warden to club together to build a fence round the park. This is after dogs and wildlife have already been attacked and or killed.

They are an absolute menace but I guess not a problem where the MSPs live 🤷‍♀️

Challengemonica · 22/12/2023 17:45

Puncheur - God forbid that the Scottish might actually learn from what goes on elsewhere. FFS - yeah, let's wait until there's a series of fatalities before we do anything 🙄 Or perhaps you think Scottish XL bullies are different altogether superior to their English cousins?

Yep, this is the thinking that goes on in SNP land. Can't imagine why it's all gone wrong north of the border.

AuContraire · 22/12/2023 22:36

Just saw this on the news and DP told me that the ban doesn't apply here, I didn't know.

Just what this spiraling country needs: a mass influx of all the dangerous dogs that can't be controlled by their English owners.

Northernsouloldies · 23/12/2023 01:53

Typical Snp got to be different from England... Couldn't possibly upset the face painted Saltire loonies.

treadingonlego · 23/12/2023 08:19

They'll probably start adding an xl bully to the baby boxes

Northernsouloldies · 23/12/2023 19:29

What??? Something English in ab bairn box.. Never. 😁

SomeCatFromJapan · 24/12/2023 23:38

Far better to wait for someone to needlessly lose their life in a violent gruesome manner, you're quite right. Can't expect the SNP to be anything but reactive.

@Mindymomo vets will absolutely still be seeing xl bullys!! Insurance companies will also still cover them in many instances. As long as they have an exemption certificate then they will still be insurable. It's utterly ridiculous to suggest that vets won't see them!!!
