Yes the daily broadcast gave Sturgeon plenty media attention. It meant she could exploit the situation for her own political gain. She wanted Scotland to appear to be better than the rest of the UK in the management of Covid. As she is a better communicator than Boris, this worked to her advantage. But in reality she did no better. Unfortunately she fooled many people.

user567543 · 27/01/2024 15:50

There are so many better questions for Covid inquiry to focus on - are our nhs waiting lists too long because we didn’t relax rules fast enough? What did they know re care homes/Nike conference, should the second lock down have shut schools at all, just off the top of my head.

but no, it’ll be all ‘Shitler’ snigger etc etc.

IWillNoLie · 27/01/2024 17:31

I thought it had been said at the inquiry that there was no reason to shut schools in the second lockdown

Scottishskifun · 27/01/2024 17:50

Sugarfree23 · 27/01/2024 10:09

@RandomGeocache it was fairly obvious at the time that the zero covid was never going to happen and the SNP were using it as a big flag waving exercise

Look back at the Railing threads.

Most definitely! It sadly also fed into the people blame game!

I lost a few "friends" who as soon as they found out I had covid were asking what rules I had broken and I clearly wasn't doing as I was supposed to...... I was seriously unwell. When I explained DS1 got it first likely from nursery I got a barrage of why was I sending him to nursery (2nd lockdown but key workers).

I'm glad they have been exposed and all the high and mighty veil has fallen big style!

I think the scientists were saying that schools should stay open if other things closed. But Sturgeon caved to pressure from the EIS and wanted to go harder than Boris. So our kids were out of school from just before Christmas 2020 until after the easter holidays in 2021. English kids were mostly back early March.

IWillNoLie · 27/01/2024 18:18

The face covering in schools was also a Sturgeon push - even though their own report published at the time said it might actually increase infection due to cross contamination. Another EIS thing but also because they thought if they forced it on school children then there would be more compliance in the community.

Swinney’s last minute ‘parents must wear face coverings OUTSIDE at school pickup’ was my last straw - not even a pretence of evidence for that. And don’t get me started on the ridiculousness of having to wear one for the eight steps from door to table in a cafe when you could then sit for an hour with it off.

RandomGeocache · 27/01/2024 18:43

Or the rule that you didn't have to wear masks on a train in England but did in Scotland, so were supposed to put one on at Gretna to protect you from the person you'd been sitting next to for three hours from Euston.

Or the whole fuss about "vertical drinking" and when is a cafe not a cafe, and "flow before you go" - honestly, there will be PhDs written for centuries about the mismanagement of covid, and how governments around the world scared populations into compliance.

I do remember them suggesting the bottom six inches of classroom doors should be sawn off.

And also not allowed to play music in hospitality, you know, in case anyone decided to try to enjoy themselves.

GoatsareGOAT · 27/01/2024 20:12

32% still trust Sturgeon 👀 just how?!

I remember all those covid threads full of "oh you're so lucky to have Sturgeon while we've got Boris"

We had a weekend in Craig Tara in the September. The quiz included a “music round” which was just silence as music wasn’t allowed 🤣

Merrilydancing · 27/01/2024 22:07

Nicola hoodwinked a huge number of the population who were of the mind that at least she wasn’t Boris and thus stopped them actually critically thinking about what was happening.

I hope that voters remember this at the next election as they really were no better than Boris although at least his medical/scientific advisors acted with integrity and were not beholden to the government.

BBC News - Covid in Scotland: Pub ban on background music to be lifted
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-55260312

4 months of no music or TV in hospitality.

I've no idea why we as a society went along with this shit. A lot of us knew it was gobshite at the time, hence all the railing threads borne out of sheer frustration.

ArabeIIaScott · 27/01/2024 22:36

Background music?! Good lord.

ArabeIIaScott · 27/01/2024 22:36

To be honest a TV ban in pubs sounds brilliant ...

Sugarfree23 · 28/01/2024 00:02

@ArabeIIaScott There are pubs chains like Wetherspoon who provide pubs with no TV and no music.

The point is Scottish government removed choice for no scientific reason.

Twist the knife a little further on a sector which was already struggling. There are pubs closing every week.
It's a massive sector which provides employment and must pull in a shed load of tax, in both LA Rates, Vat and duty.
No thought for the publicans who still needed to heat their premises, pay their rent and rates, pay the staff.

TheBelmont · 29/01/2024 07:48

Nicola and her forgetfulness strikes again? Or do we think something more sinister?

Impossible to tell what is going on based on that article really, it will be very interesting to see what comes of this.

'SNP insiders have been frustrated by how long the investigation has been taking'

No shit! £1 million spent on Branchform and still no conclusions. Wind it up already.

TheBelmont · 29/01/2024 09:38

I expect the reason it is taking so long is the SNP have failed to maintain any records and have consistently lied and provided conflicting accounts of what has happened so it is taking a long time to unpick. A bit rich of them to complain about the time when it is due to THEIR actions that it is taking so long.

That said, I am also pissed off at how long it is taking 😂
