In a line that should win some kind of award for irony, Mike Russell says he find ego-driven politics deeply unattractive:

'Mr Russell said the SNP needed to focus on the big issues in Scotland and "not what seems to be a rather odd tantrum from somebody who was going to lose their seat and lose their nomination."
He added: "That was absolutely clear - the constituency party had lost faith in her, and I think that kind of ego-driven politics is deeply unattractive."

MP Lisa Cameron defected to Tories in 'tantrum', says SNP president

Lisa Cameron MP defected from the SNP to the Conservatives amid claims of toxicity in the party.

IWillNoLie · 13/10/2023 14:52

A fine demonstration of the toxic culture in the SNP

SirChenjins · 13/10/2023 15:00

Mr Russell doing a sterling job there of proving Dr Cameron’s claims to be wholly accurate 👍

annabelindajane · 13/10/2023 19:20

They are a piece of work the SNP - their incompetence and self regard knows no bounds . The damage they are doing to Scotland is unforgivable. Luckily some people are waking up to this

gawditswindy · 13/10/2023 19:32

She should resign though - and I'd say the same about any defecting MP. A lot of votes cast in the UK are for the representative of a party - rather than the individual in question, so she should let the voters choose. Maybe they'd vote her in again regardless of party. As they are her constituents maybe they share her views.

ArabeIIaScott · 13/10/2023 19:47

That is appalling.

'The SNP MP who defected to the Conservatives this week has been forced to move out of her home after receiving threats of being “bricked in the street”.'

Unacceptable.

SirChenjins · 13/10/2023 20:16

Absolutely unacceptable. Has Youseless condemned this yet?

ArabeIIaScott · 13/10/2023 20:39

To be fair, he is quite busy.

Someone tell Shona you don't need to isolate if you have covid, anymore?

I very much doubt Youseless types his own tweets - a resounding condemnation from the FM should be standard in these situations.

I disagree. In Westminster you are voting for an MP not a party. And the MP represents you not the party, though they align themselves to a party. Having politicians represent a party with loyalty to the party not their constituents is the biggest weakness of PR and one of the reasons the Scottish Government is such a mess.

Abhannmor · 14/10/2023 10:50

Nonsense. Most ppl never meet their MP and many couldn't name him/her. If PR has a failing it is that sometimes ' independent ' parish pump ward heelers have too much sway. Demanding special treatment for their own town to the detriment of everyone else.

IWillNoLie · 14/10/2023 13:44

It is irrelevant whether you have met your MP or not. You vote for an individual as MP, not the party.

Factually accurate but people don’t behave in that way…I’d guess most people are voting for the party and don’t have a clue who the individual is.

Lisa Cameron has defected to the Conservative Party.

I'm quite confused about this.

Is she now a rare Tory who believes in independence, or was she an SNPer who didn't.

I know there's more to politics, but it seems an odd leap.

gawditswindy · 15/10/2023 08:22

Career politicians join the party thats most likely to provide them with a job. I doubt many of them are particularly fussed about anything, from Indy down.* Same in WM.

  • Except self id. Apparently.
SirChenjins · 15/10/2023 08:43

She said she didn’t feel her religious views would have been welcome in Labour, so that left the LibDems, loony Greens or the Alba party. Perhaps she knows men can’t be women and perhaps she doesn’t want to be in a party led by a man charged with multiple sexual assaults and rape (albeit he was acquitted)

She's a former consultant clinical psychologist, hardly a career politician and she has said she is not standing at the next election.

I guess her defecting to the tories just shows that not all of the SNP are left wing as they usually claim.

ArabeIIaScott · 15/10/2023 10:00

The SNP never were especially leftwing. I suppose they identify as progressive.

SirChenjins · 15/10/2023 14:49

Yep - more of the same to give us more of the same.

mibbelucieachwell · 15/10/2023 15:58

She said she left the snp as it was toxic. Presumably she thinks the Conservative are less toxic!!!! The party that expelled the father of the house, a former chancellor of the exchequer etc. A party so terrified of the ukippers they broke away from the biggest trading bloc in the worl d and fell out needlessly with our neighbours.

Poor Humza Yousaf though. What a horrible situation for his in laws. They must be desperately worried.

I wonder if the IDF know the first minister of Scotland's MIL is in Gaza? If so, do they know where? And do they care? Will it make any difference to their actions?

SirChenjins · 15/10/2023 16:59

The FM of Scotland’s MIL is no more or less important that every other civilian caught up in this terrible war on both sides.

Edited

She could have become independent.
