Wasn't there corruption on Edinburgh city council a few years ago.

Hi there,
Just swinging by to remind everyone that contempt of court protections are triggered in Scotland immediately an arrest is made. So go easy, or indeed ca' canny, those of you who don't want a mis-trial...

I don't understand. Surely you don't have to be arrested to be in contempt of court?

KnittingNeedles · 05/04/2023 12:24

Scots Law is different from that in England and Wales.

Independentscotland · 05/04/2023 11:47

I’m not a member of the SNP but I do support an independent Scotland.

This complaint about finances has dragged on for a long time. My understanding is that the money donated was used by the SNP for general campaigning as they believe everything they do has the aim of independence. Peter Murrell will have signed off the accounts. The complaint isn’t about whether the money has been stolen but how it was used. There will be technical legal issues about this but its by no means clear cut. Interviewing Peter Murrell under caution is probably a good thing as it will either provide evidence of potential criminality or not. Don’t forget that the complaint was made by a person who very much has an axe to grind with the SNP.

This is bollocks. If you know where the money is and what it was used for @Independentscotland then you have had two years to tell the Police. Oh wait, you don’t know, that’s why there was an investigation and now an arrest.

The Police don’t get involved because someone adds up wrong. They get involved when there’s crime.

The SNP have clearly stated this. The police get involved for potential crime hence the long running investigation. They have now decided that their investigations warrant the arrest of PM and search of his house. It will be up to the CPS as to whether he is charged.

PersonaNonGarter · 05/04/2023 12:43

’The SNP has clearly stated this’

well LOL.

Not sure why you are being so sanctimonious or so sure of the SNP’s righteousness. Police Scotland received the first complaint in March 2021. The SNP have had two years to clear this up and haven’t done so. In fact, more people have resigned. I think we can say confidently that the Police have acted (eventually) because they do believe a crime has been committed.

So Salmond. So Sturgeon. So Murrell. And it is See Ya to Independence. TF.

NicolaSturGONE · 05/04/2023 12:44

oh happy day, oh happy daaaaaaaay

Lots of SNP supporters who either didn't know about the financial stuff or ignored it, will hopefully be opening their eyes now.

wellhi · 05/04/2023 12:45

Very disappointing.

I'm no huge fan of NS but I thought she was better than this.

(Assuming she is involved. Maybe she isn't but it seems likely)

NowThatsWhatICall22 · 05/04/2023 12:47

Anyone blaming Westminster/Tories/Boris for this? 😆

wellhi · 05/04/2023 12:57

Surprised at the house she lives in. Thought she would have lived in a much more salubrious house / area.

This is the one she “lives” in with Murrell…not the only one

Hardly sanctimonious? It’s up to the police to consider potential criminality via their investigation and they have now reached a point where they consider an arrest is justified. The SNP have said they used the money appropriately. It’s not clear cut and the police, CPS and ultimately the courts will determine the outcome.

MoltenLasagne · 05/04/2023 13:20

What I don't understand is how it wasn't always considered a massive conflict of interest to have the FM married to the chief exec of the SNP.

user567543 · 05/04/2023 13:21

Exactly - so many of these issues have been structural, due to fox guarding the hens kinds of situations.

thebaneofmylifeisacat · 05/04/2023 13:22

Wonder if Nicola will be pushing her dh under the bus like she did her close friend salmond.

Too much power makes people drunk careless snd greedy.

If she hadn't thrown Scottish women under the bus I might have some sympathy but not now.

Georgiepud · 05/04/2023 13:30

Oh dear there's none (SNP) so blind .......

SirChenjins · 05/04/2023 13:32

The SNP have said they used the money appropriately

Well that’s that, then. I mean, if the SNP say they used the funds appropriately who are we to question them.

The police, otoh, obviously disagree re the meaning of ‘appropriately’.

No I didn’t say that. The Snp have given their opinion and the police are investigating. It’s by no means clear cut

Perfect way to put it, especially as we’re not really supposed to be talking about the very thing that many have known about, commented about, voted against for many years.
Hopefully more eyes have been opened today.

Meantime, be on high alert for squirrels 😂🧐

NowThatsWhatICall22 · 05/04/2023 13:48

The number of people on social media saying ‘maybe this is why Mrs X resigned?

Slow handclap for all those and all the people at the back, as the penny finally drops 👏🏼

Hedjwitch · 05/04/2023 13:49

Surely its all Westminster's fault and lessons will be learned

thebaneofmylifeisacat · 05/04/2023 13:49

It's pretty clear cut if you are arrested to be fair.

Where's the money?

It's been spent here

Evidence that please

No can't

Arrest

And again, the police disagree with their opinion. So much so, in fact, the the husband of the FM has actually been arrested.

Someone really didn’t fully understand what these funds could be used for. You’d have thought they would have had a better grasp of the law - or got someone independent in who did have. Wonder why they didn’t Hmm

Yes! I'm just incredulous it was considered acceptable. When DH and I started dating we had to declare it to work (same business) despite being in completely different departments and areas. It's such a standard rule in large businesses, how was it not the same for a country and the main political party??

Some people "despise Tories."

I despise thieves.
