I just can't put into words how furious this makes me. Females are having the pis absolutely ripped out of them in Scotland.

What the fuck would a male understand about the indignity of realising you'd leaked through onto your clothes.

About the cold fear when your period is late.

About trying to unwrap a tampon quietly. Etc etc.

I suppose the only saving grace is at least they are not claiming to be a woman.

Discovereads, have you read the job description?

It’s stuff like this that gives the feminist movement a bad name and sets us back. This is beyond silly. It’s like demanding the Health Secretary be a woman because they manage all womens health in the country and you can’t oversee womens health unless you’re a woman. This person is going to be just as far removed from the on the ground execution of period outreach.

We had such a short period of time where females were allowed to speak for themselves and lead where it was a female only issueWithout males speaking over and for us and now it is being destroyed. Why can't you see how negative this new "progressiveness" is for females.

I'm shaking my head at all of the apologists here. Yes, men know something about periods, some are wonderful fathers and husbands etc etc. That does not qualify them for this role.

Aside from this being in no way a 'diversity hire' it sends a real message to Scottish women. From a Scottish Woman. We hear you, Nicola. You've reached the top, bully for you. Now you can give the little men a leg up, because obviously they need all the help they can give.

OPTICS! Read the room.

WTAF.

The job description requires 'successful track record of engaging and empowering a large range of people from a diverse range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, in particular young people who menstruate.'
And
'This will include engaging with staff, partners, communities and young people'.

So it's not exactly described as a hands off role. I am questioning why a bloke would be at all interested in the role.

That is actually a hands off description. It’s basically a fancy way of track record gathering requirements from a large target population. And it’s not going to be face to face with the target population given the scope, it’s going to be directing the project team to put out surveys and to do research.

Why wouldn’t a man be interested? It’s project management. It doesn’t really matter what the project is, same principles apply and same skills are used.

Whoops1 · 16/08/2022 00:15

‘It’s about making people aware of the availability of period products for anyone of any gender, whenever they need it.‘

im not that keen on it being a bloke, but the red shirt? Ewwww. And the words above? Really ewwwww. And just ewwww

Yes. And I’ve been a project manager so understand it quite well.

RJnomore1 · 16/08/2022 00:18

This post wasn’t recruited for by the Scottish government….

I can’t believe I’m saying this has nothing to do with Nicola sturgeon but actually, this has nothing to do with nicola sturgeon. The policy isn’t even SNP it was driven through by monica Lennon who is labour.

But it was recruited by a local partnership anyway.

Why not? Do you similarly demand that Always only have female managers overseeing only women to write TV adverts for period products?

Develop, coordinate, report, support…

I am questioning why a bloke would be at all interested in the role.

Why? I know male gynaecologists, obstetricians, male scientists who research diseases that primarily and predominantly affect women.

As others have said, it's primarily a PM role. This is why they've got someone with experience in PM, rather than women's healthcare.

But he won’t be. That’s not what the job entails.

RJnomore1 · 16/08/2022 00:24

This is getting dangerously close to personal attacks on someone. If it’s not already crossed that line with the shirt comment.

Do you feel like that about every man who is passionate about a job in women's healthcare? Hmm

I have a friend who researches early onset ovarian cancer, which involves talking to patient steering groups. I can assure you he does it because he's passionate about helping women, rather than just being a creep Hmm

venusandmars · 16/08/2022 00:26

I was the Director of a disability charity, without having that disability myself. I had an amazing team of ambassadors and spokespeople who would stand alongside and offer all the detail.
My role was to get funding, to campaign, to create an efficient organisation. IT would have been tokenism to appoint a person with the disability if they could not have done the job.

In this case, in a mysoginistic world, I think having a man speak about periods is good, not bad.

Pallisers · 16/08/2022 00:28

ah come on. The FIRST person to take on this role is a man? Seriously. He beat out every female candidate for this first-time role, a new initiative about periods in Scotland? He was simply better than every other woman who applied. If you believe that, you'll believe anything.

Maybe the fifth person appointed to the role could be a man but the first is just taking the piss.

And yes there are some jobs where lived experience might matter a fair bit. I wouldn't be appointing a white male as head of diversity in our company any time soon.

lightisnotwhite · 16/08/2022 00:28

Men are shit with periods though. Even the ones who think they are down with it equate it to something like having the runs for a week every month . Fine to joke or talk about but nothing you’d want evidence off. And a lot women have similar ideas.
My mum kept all sanitary products in a special cupboard. Mine are in a bowl by the side of the loo.
So actually although I take the point maybe it needs a man to get across that 50% of the population have periods and that they aren’t all “just part” of being a woman. They’re expensive, embarrassing, problematic and sometimes traumatic and men need to be part of the solution to make society an easier place to have a period in.

Pallisers · 16/08/2022 00:30

In this case, in a mysoginistic world, I think having a man speak about periods is good, not bad.

you might be right there. But how fucking sad is that. We should at least acknowledge the deep misogyny within that statement alone. Women's voices alone won't get us anywhere - and you can see that clearly. Maybe the way to change that is not to ask a man to be our spokesman but to elevate women's voices and change attitudes.

bridgetreilly · 16/08/2022 00:30

I think this is completely fine, honestly, and if it means that more men feel comfortable hearing about and seeing evidence of periods, that would be a bonus. This job is not about dealing with actual teenage girls. It’s compliance and project management and I can’t get upset about it.

1blossomtree · 16/08/2022 00:31

The men in my life have a perfectly good grasp of what menstruration is & how it can affect girls/women.

Pallisers · 16/08/2022 00:31

As others have said, it's primarily a PM role. This is why they've got someone with experience in PM, rather than women's healthcare.

And there were simply no candidates who were women with good PM experience? I find that VERY hard to believe.

Rainbowshit · 16/08/2022 00:32

Whyare people insuring he won't be talking to young girls. It says so right here. Why the fuck would young girls want to talk to a man about periods? What about the dignity of those young girls?

Tell me this is not real please. Scotland's first period dignity officer is a man. A MAN.

Well it might have stopped the ads with blue fluid being tested on STs decades sooner.
