Tell me this is not real please. Scotland's first period dignity officer is a man. A MAN.

I just can't put into words how furious this makes me. Females are having the pis absolutely ripped out of them in Scotland.

What the fuck would a male understand about the indignity of realising you'd leaked through onto your clothes.

About the cold fear when your period is late.

About trying to unwrap a tampon quietly. Etc etc.

I suppose the only saving grace is at least they are not claiming to be a woman.

He's clearly got very high morals

"As well as a former role as an account manager with Imperial Tobacco"

Davidsonuk · 15/08/2022 22:39

I'm a man and I find this completely cringe..
Periods are the domain of women only.

I read a lot of odd stuff happening in Scotland in recent years regarding stuff like this. Apparently breastfeeding doesn't exist up there anybody.

In Scotland, period products are now available free to all, no charge.

Jason's job is publicising the service, and liaising with schools, colleges, councils etc about where and how the supplies of free products are distributed . (Its 5 years since Dundee initiated a postal service for free period products) .

I don't find any of the above inappropriate for a man. It's got absolutely NOTHING to do with shy leaky girls having to ask a man for a tampon.

What the fuck is a "shy leaky girl" and how can a middle aged man help such a creature?

GetOffTheRoof · 15/08/2022 21:44

For fucksake.

So, how do we start the kickback against this? Just because someone has been appointed, doesn't mean they should actually continue in post.

Twitter is probably the place to begin.....

@GetOffTheRoof perfectly said! This is out and out BS and has to change 😡

saltwaterandsuncream · 15/08/2022 22:55

@Davidsonuk periods are not the domain of women only. You have missed the point here.

There was an opportunity for a woman to lead a nationwide conversation about periods so that they are not the domain of women only, rather that someone with conviction and integrity and actual life experience can champion womens causes among everyone.

InquiringMinds · 15/08/2022 23:02

Very upset about this! I would like to see how he handles a girl or women flooding in front of him uncontrollably because they have adenomyosis ot endometriosis or both! Furious hearing this news! I have both and before my three ops in my early twenties, I would get reprimanded at school by my male teacher if I had a “flood”. This is not a man’s job, utterly disgusted he has been appointed!

Waitwhat23 · 15/08/2022 23:04

This appears to be the job description for the role - www.myjobscotland.gov.uk/education/dundee-and-angus-college/jobs/period-dignity-regional-lead-officer-280621

I've seen a few posts here and on Twitter which seem to think the role is simply to supply various sites and venues with period products, implying It's essentially paper pushing ('so there's no reason a man can't do it').

The job description doesn't seem to read like that at all, in particular -

'5. Provide support to the project team in identifying, developing and facilitating events and activities that engage our communities and young people, creating opportunities for learning, networking, and accessing free products, (with a particular focus on identifying barriers to access and reducing the stigma around menstruation and period products.'

Lots of focus on engaging young people and outreach work. Given the subject matter, you'd think it would be rather more suitable for a woman, wouldn't you?

Its a public service job. Nothing wrong with it being a man.
Really don’t understand the outrage. Women complain men don’t care and don’t do shit to address their issues, and when there are men who do care and have chosen a career that helps women and girls, we see this outrage?
It’s just surreal and ridiculous.

InquiringMinds · 15/08/2022 23:13

@Waitwhat23 exactly, it is more suitable for a woman. I cannot imagine a man doing this job.

Is that you, Nicola? ⬆️

and what the actual fuck is this fresh hell from a pp on this thread:
the menopause lead in one of the other Unison Branches I know of is a bloke.

I may have possibly misread this but if periods are not the domain of women only, does this mean that they are the domain of men?

Theres no such thing as man jobs and woman jobs. To say otherwise is sex discrimination.

Surreal and ridiculous are 2 very appropriate terms ,but not in the way you meant them.

Davidsonuk · 15/08/2022 23:20

Must be wonderful to have a disproportionately higher amount of money spent on you for living in Scotland compared to English taxpayers..

All those free goodies prescriptionn, sanitary products, uni education..

What next?

bloodyunicorns · 15/08/2022 23:21

For FUCK's sake.

Laudable that Scotland plans to offer free period products.

Laughable that they have chosen a man to do this. Wtf?

Whatwouldscullydo · 15/08/2022 23:21

33 grand to mansplain periods and period issues.

Really

Yes, I can sense there is discomfort in admitting that equality between the sexes means that not only can women do what traditionally would have been jobs only for men, but that men can now do jobs that were traditionally only for women. Equality works both ways. You can’t have it if 50% of the population is barred from any job on account of their sex. So no matter how “wrong” it feels, those feelings are coming from a place of wanting to maintain inequality.

'“I was chosen as the best person for the job and for me, it’s irrespective of gender.

“Having a guy can’t be a bad thing – it grabs the headlines, but that’s not the reason I was put into post!” Jason continues.

“For me it’s about driving the discussion from a young age so boys and girls are included and there’s no hiding it away because that keeps it as a taboo topic.

“I want to be seen as a positive male role model.”'

So long as Jason's happy, eh?

That sounds like an article I read last year. The man commenting talks about how he' s going to remove the stigma from periods by having boys and girls discuss them openly in class.
What was the point of a man trying to lead a discussion like that with girls? How personal was he going to get? How did he plan to force the girls to confide their feelings?
Why were the boys to be there?jHow was he going to stop them being crude? Why do the girls need a male role model? Why not a female one who actually knows what she's talking about.
Why are men muscling in on this at all?

You've been here a while Discover. You know that's not true. The occupational exemptions of the EQA2010 make that clear - www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2010/15/notes/division/3/16/26/1.

In this particular case, those exemptions weren't invoked so a man can take up the post. It doesn't mean that women can't query why a man, with no experience whatsoever of periods, facing menstruation stigma or actually using period products, could be considered suitable for the job, above a woman who actually has experienced any of those things.

Yeah, that’s not what a project manager does. He’s not personally going to be going into classrooms and talking to girls.
