Tell me this is not real please. Scotland's first period dignity officer is a man. A MAN.

I just can't put into words how furious this makes me. Females are having the pis absolutely ripped out of them in Scotland.

What the fuck would a male understand about the indignity of realising you'd leaked through onto your clothes.

About the cold fear when your period is late.

About trying to unwrap a tampon quietly. Etc etc.

I suppose the only saving grace is at least they are not claiming to be a woman.

Look there are many many things wrong in Scotland, this genuinely isn’t one of them.

Hard disagree. I am utterly furious about this. It is very much a symbol of what is wrong with Scotland. Women's rights, dignity, safety and privacy are slowly being undermined and destroyed. Enough is enough.

Lived experience is causing bias on this very thread. We are seeing women so biased by their lived experience they think only a woman can do this job.

How about taking the blinkers off and considering why women's lived experience is affecting their responses before calling it biased.

Oh I know thats not a valid excuse as I am a woman and get periods too.

Please explain what right(s), dignity or privacy you have lost by a man doing this job?

Rapidtango · 15/08/2022 23:53

RJNomore, the main reason male surgeons/oncologists etc deal with women's health issues is patriarchy. I just had a quick Google to see how women surgeons are represented in prostate care. Very, very few.

33 grand to mansplain periods and period issues.

Really

Fools. They could have got woman and paid her less.

In Scotland, period products are now available free to all, no charge.

Jason's job is publicising the service, and liaising with schools, colleges, councils etc about where and how the supplies of free products are distributed . (Its 5 years since Dundee initiated a postal service for free period products) .

I don't find any of the above inappropriate for a man. It's got absolutely NOTHING to do with shy leaky girls having to ask a man for a tampon.

As a PP said, thank goodness for English taxpayers money. Under the SNP you cannot even identify what a woman is and this once magnificent country has utterly gone to the dogs.

How dare you try to imply in one sentence that “Scotland” is better for women and girls for having free of charge period products AND in the next breath state that you’ve no issue with a man in this role.

it’s pathetic to see the amount of bowing & scraping to misogynists and centring of entitled, odd men.

Grin yeah right. How about a straight white man applies for a job as equality and diversity officer and gets the job over and above POC, disabled applicants and anyone gay/trans or in any way diverse.

Fucking ridiculous.

Rapidtango · 15/08/2022 23:54

And, tbh, I reckon few would have an issue if a male patient requested a male doctor to discuss his prostate with. It's only women who seem to be wrong for having a preference.

Rapidtango · 15/08/2022 23:55

Split infinitives notwithstanding.

Discovereads · 15/08/2022 23:55

It’s stuff like this that gives the feminist movement a bad name and sets us back. This is beyond silly. It’s like demanding the Health Secretary be a woman because they manage all womens health in the country and you can’t oversee womens health unless you’re a woman. This person is going to be just as far removed from the on the ground execution of period outreach.

InquiringMinds · 15/08/2022 23:56

Exactly!

Rapidtango · 15/08/2022 23:57

Discovereads, nope. A health secretary has overview of the whole population. Only women menstruate.

Yep, more bias. Straight, white, men are part of diversity. You can’t have diversity without representation from all demographics, so why exclude anyone?

Grumpypants78 · 16/08/2022 00:00

I just have no words!

Davidsonuk · 16/08/2022 00:00

What about having a male for head of chest feeding in Scotland

You missed my point entirely. You don’t need to menstruate to do this job at that level.

Perhaps we need more women in prostrate care then.

Everyone is (deliberately?) ignoring the point this is a project manager post anyway. I haven’t seen a single response to my question about whether you’d obect to your female HCP having a male manager.

RJnomore1 · 16/08/2022 00:02

Apologies for the extra r up there, it’s late. I do know the difference between laid flat and male glands.

RJnomore1 · 16/08/2022 00:05

Oh - the terminology young people who menstruate is dictated by Holyrood. Now there’s something worth getting het up about.

maddy68 · 16/08/2022 00:05

Isn't the role compliance ? Eg ensuring that period products are not charged for. Why does that need to be a female?

SammyScrounge · 16/08/2022 00:06

Discovereads · 15/08/2022 23:23

Yeah, that’s not what a project manager does. He’s not personally going to be going into classrooms and talking to girls.

Yes I know. But what struck me was the incongruity of a man dealing with menstrual items at all.
And then there is the job description quoted above by waitwhat23:
i'dentifying, developing and facilitating events and activities that engage our communities and young people, creating opportunities for learning, networking, and accessing free products, (with a particular focus on identifying barriers to access and reducing the stigma around menstruation and period products.''

I agree with her that this job description sounds that the job is more than pen pushing.

Rapidtango · 16/08/2022 00:07

The job description requires 'successful track record of engaging and empowering a large range of people from a diverse range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, in particular young people who menstruate.'
And
'This will include engaging with staff, partners, communities and young people'.

So it's not exactly described as a hands off role. I am questioning why a bloke would be at all interested in the role.

Discovereads · 16/08/2022 00:09

They are indeed. Maybe this will help.

A post similar to project manager in remoteness from on the ground delivery of a government initiative would be a buyer in procurement. If a project manager must have lived experience, then so would the buyer of all the free period products. Do you really need to be able to menstruate to take orders from the tens of thousands of geographic locations and write a contract to buy and deliver these period products? Do you have to have used a tampon to be able order a million to be distributed within Scotland?

RJnomore1 · 16/08/2022 00:09

Why is a man dealing with menstrual products incongruous? My husband buys them for me and his dsughters. Should he not be?
