Tell me this is not real please. Scotland's first period dignity officer is a man. A MAN.

I just can't put into words how furious this makes me. Females are having the pis absolutely ripped out of them in Scotland.

What the fuck would a male understand about the indignity of realising you'd leaked through onto your clothes.

About the cold fear when your period is late.

About trying to unwrap a tampon quietly. Etc etc.

I suppose the only saving grace is at least they are not claiming to be a woman.

And what about personal responsibility?

If I found out a job would entail speaking /engaging with men about erection issues and wishing to break down barriers about a man's medical problem affects everyone else id not apply.

It wouldn't be right.

Whatwouldscullydo · 20/08/2022 08:59

And I most certainly would not pose for a picture with a little boy who clearly looks like he'd rather he anywhere but anywhere near me.

Why do people keep referring to a man they've never met by his first name?

It's a bizarre posting style with significant consistencies amongst those posters. Makes you wonder if it's members of the appointing group. I've never seen it in any other discussion about a "famous" person or celeb, so why here?

Really? Never seen a ‘famous person’ called by their name in any thread ever? Bollocks.
Tons of threads on Boris, Putin, Amber Heard, Johnny Depp, Katie Price, Nigel Farage, Tommy Robinson, Kellie Jay Jean/Posie Parker, Sarah Beeny, JK Rowling, Gemma Collins, Theresa May, Peter Andre, Sarah Everard, Olivia Newton John, Martin Lewis, Captain Tom, Dominic Raab😜, Angela Rayner, Jeremy Corbyn, Nicola Sturgeon, Kier Starmer, Rishi Sunak, Kelly Brook, Kelly Holmes, R Kelly, Adele, Robin Harper, Joan Cherry, Ann Sinnott, Serena Williams, William & Kate, Joanna Williams, Priti Patel, Tyrone Mings, Victoria Beckham, David Beckham, Brooklyn Beckham, Miley Cyrus, Jess Phillips. Etc.

But his job doesn’t entail speaking/engaging with women about period issues?
All his job says is to support the project team to plan activities and events where local staff would do that. And also to support the project team in terms of breaking down the stigma. He’s not going to be in an active role for any of that, he’s in a support role.

Provide support to the project team in identifying, developing and facilitating events and activities that engage our communities and young people, creating opportunities for learning, networking, and accessing free products, (with a particular focus on identifying barriers to access and reducing the stigma around menstruation and period products.”

Whatwouldscullydo · 20/08/2022 09:13

The job specifically mentions engaging with communities and " young people who menstruate" as well as mentioning outreach.

The photo shows him.talking to a clearly uncomfortable girl with some other bloke.

No it doesn’t. I’ve just cut and pasted the part of the job description that numerous posters with agendas have deliberately portrayed as saying direct engagement with communities and young people who menstruate. It doesn’t say that at all. It says “provide support to the project team….” = SUPPORT ROLE.

In addition the ‘outreach’ is how they misread
“Work in different environments (both office based and outreach), at times best suited to the community (including some evenings)”

And “community” actually refers to the community partners, not random public locations as is clear in the location section of the job description .
“Staff may be required to work at any of the Dundee and Angus College campuses. Reimbursement is available for essential travel between campuses. Please note this is a regional post working with community partners Dundee & Angus College, Perth College, Dundee City Council and Angus City Council”

should have noted these are SM comments from Twitter. Not anything anyone on MN has said.

Just wondered why you are telling us what the people you follow are saying?

Whatwouldscullydo · 20/08/2022 09:37

So a job centred around women akd girls access ro period products and identifying barriers etx is to be done without ever speaking to women and girls and a man who in his own words was discussing menopause and breaking down barriers and being a role model will achieve tbai without speaking to a single women pr girl also.

And man who will not leave an office environment including other office environments at other venues os the public face of a job despite no one dealing with the subject matter of said job even knowing he is even there because he doesn't talk to anyone relevant to finding out the barriers faced ?

Yeah that doesn't add up . 36 grand to have nothing to do with anyone..i doubt it

PeriodBro · 20/08/2022 10:00

'“Work in different environments (both office based and outreach),'

Does not mean 'outreach'. Okay, then.

It shocks me that the acronym for this role is PDO.

Shook I tell you.

Given that members of the group haven't even bothered to try and de-escalate this on places like twitter, or with the media (just said they aren't going to to comment), I highly doubt they're sending people onto MN to argue.

It baffles belief they didn't sort out a designated twitter handle for this project before doing the press release to use for comms.

bolleauxnouveau · 20/08/2022 10:43

Well it's certainly brought the project to public awareness.🤔

@Whatwouldscullydo

Starting salary is 33. DM have reported top end for maximum outrage.

When it comes to organising public engagement/outreach, and using that information to inform policy, & then feeding back to stakeholders and the community...there's a huge amount of work that needs to be done beyond speaking to the groups you're interested in.

Even more so when it's project being coordinated across multiple regions of a country. I'd expect a project of this scale to have a large team working for it, and don't think it needs to be mandatory for everyone to be female. The job spec this guy has been recruited for looks like one of this logistics type roles.

Now why on earth they've done a press release that implies he's been recruited for a job that is primarily public engagement, and not bothered to try and correct it, I have no fucking idea.

They need to clear this up.

Rainbowshit · 20/08/2022 10:47

Can't believe discovereads is still going. 😂 You do have a connection to this in some way don't you?

What will the evening work be about? Why does the job holder need a PVG? How's he going to do the outreach part and engage with young people if he never leaves the office?

We're just not buying it. At all.

And you can FRO with your accusations of sexism. Period dignity officer is a job that is crying out to be a genuine occupational requirement for a female under the equality act and it is NOT sexist to say so.

You are not in step with public opinion on this at all.

The evening work I would imagine be more support work.

PVGs also apply to certain positions of trust within organisations, even when the role does not involve direct contact with children or protected adults.

How's he going to do the outreach part and engage with young people if he never leaves the office? Hes not personally doing any outreach other than to other community partners and other period dignity officers in other regions. His position and role isn’t to actually do the outreach to service users but support the outreach done by the local staff. From the job details Position: Support

Period dignity officer is a job that is crying out to be a genuine occupational requirement for a female under the equality act and it is NOT sexist to say so.

No, it really doesn’t fall under an occupation exemption under the equality act. And it’s really telling that people need to post lies about the job details to push their opinion out that it would be an exemption for a female held job.

And you can FRO with your accusations of sexism. Yes most sexists would say that. Fact is you don’t need lived experience on whatever the project is delivering to be a project manager.

You are not in step with public opinion on this at all.. So what. Most feminists aren’t in step with public opinion. I don’t give two shits what a sexist public that’s been lied to thinks.

I’m not following any of them. A poster mistakenly thought another poster mentioning the personal attacks on Jason Grant as bullying was referring to their posts on MN. And I had agreed with that poster on the bullying. So to clear up the confusion, it seemed best to tell the offended poster who thought they’d been accused of bullying that no we are talking about SM posts. And I posted a few on them so you can see the kinds of comments that do cross the line.

He’s not doing nothing, he’s project managing. He will be gathering data from local service providers as to the demand and supply of period products and then adjusting the purchasing and delivery to match supply to demand. The local service providers will filter back to him any issues like need more of one sort of sanpro and less of another, or issues with quality of Sanpro.

On identifying barriers, he’s supporting the project team as they do that. This probably means sending a customer survey written by the team to local service providers to have women and girls fill out/do on a touch screen.

Again he was taking about being a role model for other men by supporting progress on a womens issue. Nothing wrong with that.

The press release is a fucking shit show. And as is typical of the media, they’ve mis-reported his job to make the articles money generating click-bait. Journalistic ethics sacrificed on the altar of capitalist greed.

@Discovereads How is it typical of the media? This is the press release by Grainger PR for Dundee and Angus college or am I getting that wrong? Was it paid for by taxpayers?
And as I previously quoted that press release itself states that there is surprise and intrigue at a man getting the job?
And that is where your arguments fall down. I do agree it's a shit show though.

Jason, we don’t want you anywhere near our teenage daughters, their developing bodies and your second guessing about periods. No, they really really don’t want to talk to you of all people about it!
What kind of man applies for a job. GUARANTEED to make young women feel uncomfortable?

Please do the right thing and resign as it is the stench of your sheer arrogance is likely to impact your future prospects

Sorry you are confused. The press release is a shit show…comment 1. And comment 2 is typical of the media blah blah… that’s not to say that the media did the press release (thought that was obvious really) so was referring to “the media” as the various news outlets that picked up on the press release and added their own spin on things.

This job doesn’t require being near teenage girls.
It’s not arrogant to apply for a support role.
I think you have overestimated how many women agree with you.
