Knock on the door this pm, a check up on whether we’d completed the census!
I was a bit sharp with him, saying I have until May to complete online and I asked what was the purpose of him calling at doors? He deflected by reminding me I only have two days to go for postal or something, even though I said I’d do it online. I was just a bit annoyed on behalf of elderly or anyone vulnerable who might answer the door to a census check and feel like they’ve done something wrong or they’re in trouble. This is a few days after we got a glossy paper reminder through the post.

Exactly how much money have they spent on this? Who will they send round if you fail to submit your responses as to whether you are British-other and no, that you can’t speak fluent Doric?

I think this might well be the most sensible thing Boris has ever said. I'm not sure how I got to the point where the only politicians brave enough to openly say what I feel about this are Tories, but nonetheless I agree with every word of this. Children aren't competent to make irreversible decisions regards gender treatments. Women should have single sex spaces protected. Biological males shouldn't be in women's sport. Transpeople still deserve love and respect but this is a complex issue that can't be tackled with rushed legislation. This is all just so blindingly obvious to me, and I suspect is what most people would call common sense. It's just a shame that only the Tories seem to have spotted the silent majority view on this!

Scianel · 07/04/2022 09:30

Seriously? I'd be furious at that! I feel like I'm never done having people knock at my door trying to sell me stuff as it is, in between shoving leaflets through my door. I think time for one of those no cold caller signs.

CuddlyCactus · 07/04/2022 09:37

@Y0uCann0tBeSer10us
There's a thread running on AIBU
"I agree with Boris"
For most of the posters it's the only thing they've ever agreed with that's come out of his mouth!

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 07/04/2022 10:16

@CuddlyCactus it's weird but I actually feel a sense of relief to have the most powerful man in the country speaking in this way. I've been feeling a growing sense of unease around the erosion of women's rights, the hounding and outright abuse of women who dare to speak out (Scotland have arguably put this in law now!), and politicians falling over themselves to throw our rights away in the name of 'progress'. All the while, most people have been largely oblivious to the issues because #Nodebate and the belief that things couldn't actually be that bad. In a way its good that light is being shone on these issues as the full absurdity of the situation is now obvious to more people. The prime minister coming out on the side of common sense and saying that, for instance, women should have spaces free from biological males, makes it harder for those shouting 'bigot' to dismiss the issue and carry on regardless. And if the Tories can tap into the very substantial gender critical vote it might start forcing the other parties to actually take a more balanced view too, one that actually protects women instead of throwing them under the bus.

WouldBeGood · 07/04/2022 13:18

I’m feeling that too @Y0uCann0tBeSer10us.

@Y0uCann0tBeSer10us
Well said, it's definitely good to hear the tide turning on the trans issue.
Womens spaces need protection.

I'm very GC, it's all a lot of mince to me, wear what the heck you want but it doesn't make you a man or a woman!

WouldBeGood · 07/04/2022 15:12

That sums it up nicely @Dinoteeth 🤣

mapleleavesreturn · 07/04/2022 17:05

It's a source of despair to me that the SNP and Labour couldn't comprehend these basic points and that it took Boris to say something clear and not contorted in defence of women and children.

Dinoteeth · 07/04/2022 17:12

@mapleleavesreturn, its incredible that they are all so .....I can even find the word that they are allowing a minority to walk over half the population (and many men too who don't want to be in toilets or hospital with a transman).

Labour are being so weak in both Holyrood and Westminster.

mapleleavesreturn · 07/04/2022 17:13

Ps not that despairing though on day 5 of a lovely hot sunny holiday! I've managed to burn my shoulder being out of practice with the sun and desperate to spend time in it but not too badly thankfully.

Dinoteeth · 07/04/2022 17:18

Enjoy, we were away last week blissful 😊

BinBandit · 07/04/2022 20:14

I'm treating my census like a scottish ferry. It'll be ready when I feel like it and have lots of customisations. I feel like adding painted on windows to the envelope.

mapleleavesreturn · 07/04/2022 20:18

To a lot of the census questions I was tempted to write in 'none of your business'.

Definitely enjoying it @Dinoteeth !

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 08/04/2022 14:14

Railing against finding myself agreeing with Boris and despairing that the Labour Party is so far out of step with my perfectly rational views.

WouldBeGood · 08/04/2022 14:50

Agreeing with Boris makes me feel filthy, and not in a good way.

Judging by the M74 south just now, Scotland will soon be empty! Think people are voting with their feet

Theatre is giving punters an arrival time for shows. Ours is 6.45 for 7.30 curtain up. Had to change our restaurant reservation. Obviously this is a very fortunate problem to have but it takes the shine of a long looked forward to treat night out. + Masks is not feeling like back to normal.

Chappie on RScotland this morning saying that Scottish shops had less footfall than the English shops. SG take note.

Dinoteeth · 08/04/2022 15:48

It amazes me the number of posts on Scotsnet with people relocating to Scotland.

I get the feeling labour just don't want to be in power right now, else would they write of half the electorate.

It's all well and good saying trans rights matter until it hits people's own doorstep and they realise what it really means, sharing hospital rooms with men in dresses.

I know this Dad had as much right to sleep on the kids ward as I did, but I felt weird as anything sleeping in a room with a strange man.
We were both adults looking after our kids but I really wouldn't want to be a patient in hospital with a guy in a nightie opposite me.

That's crazy! 45 minutes?! I know some people like to get there early to get a drink or whatever, but why are they still mandating it?! Hope you have a great time regardless.

And, yes, I can believe the shop thing. I had half an hour to kill the other week so popped into M&S on Princes St for a browse. It definitely wasn't busy by any means, but I couldn't wait to get out...I know masks are basically voluntary now, but when I have a bit of discretionary time, I'd rather sit in a cafe where there is no doubt that I don't need to have one on, than run the gauntlet of knowing I should be wearing one while doing something enjoyable but not at all necessary. Cheaper for me, I suppose, as I wasn't tempted to try anything on, let alone part with my cash...

WouldBeGood · 08/04/2022 16:30

DD went shopping on Oxford Street in London last Sunday and said the shops were heaving.

We went to the theatre: arrived just in the nick of time, no masks, people singing (and dancing at the end!) All totally normal

Oh, and I got another letter saying they haven't received my census. Which is unfortunate for them, as I posted it on the 20th march. It's not my responsibility to find out where it has got to... I may have removed the barcodes and all the pages apart from the ones with the answers on, but I stapled my address and declaration to the front so they have no excuse not to register it as having been completed for our address

WouldBeGood · 08/04/2022 16:59

I think they just send them to everyone 🤷🏻‍♀️

We've been given an arrival time of 8:45am for a 10am performance of a theatre show for kids. They can fuck right off if they think I'm entertaining a pre-schooler for 75 minutes in a theatre lobby at that time of the morning!

mibbelucieachwell · 09/04/2022 15:43

90 minutes before the start @QueenWatevraWaNabi Shock

The theatre I'm going to tonight has a huge reception/bar area

I was heartened to see hardly anyone wearing a mask at the swimming pool this morning.

We had the same at the Kings in Glasgow last week. We were supposed to be there at 6.30 for a 7.30 start.

We just totally ignored that and arrived about 7.10. The staff were fine about it, the only difference was they were using an exit to get people into the upper levels in the theatre so that instead of going into the foyer and up the staircase there, we went in a side door and straight up to the seats. Which was actually better as everyone was heading in the same direction and there was less crowding.
