@CuddlyCactus

Gosh I would report their racist comments to the local party. I recall you are English and am assuming you are white *@Scottishskifun* ? Imagine the reaction if they said that to a person of colourHmm
Yes English and white with a southern English accent.

Thanks will call the office this week they shouldn't allow people out if they behave this way. I know it's a low few and no doubt they would say they weren't but to me those types of comments are never acceptable!

QueenWatevraWaNabi · 04/04/2022 11:48

Scottishskifun That's disgusting. I'm dreading Indyref2 for exactly this sort of aggression. It was so hideous last time.

WouldBeGood · 04/04/2022 13:07

@Scottishskifun that’s just awful! Definitely report it.

I agree, @QueenWatevraWaNabi. it was so horrible last time. And seems like will be just as bad, if not worse

@Scottishskifun ShockAngry

Blimeyherewegoagain · 04/04/2022 13:59

@Scottishskifun they would never get away with that if you were anything other than white.
It’s just blatant racism. Definitely report it.

Railing on behalf of a friend of mine who needs surgery on her leg. A SIX year waiting list! By which time she would be in a wheelchair unable to walk. She’s going private because she has no choice.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 04/04/2022 13:59

That's vile @Scottishskifun we had a similar experience during the referendum (despite actually being Scottish, not that that should matter).

I'd almost be tempted to report it on the non-emergency police number so it's logged as a hate speech incident tbh.

ResilienceWanker · 04/04/2022 14:40

Urgh - that's horrible scottishskifun. I know they'll say its just a rogue member and doesn't reflect the views of the party - but, really, how could ANYONE think that is acceptable - especially if you're out representing a political party. I was told on a thread here ages ago that it's NOT racism, though, and it's understandable, if not justifiable, as the English have oppressed the Scots for so long... Shock Hmm . Yup - civic nationalism and all that...

Also Flowers to your friend blimey. That's a loooong wait for something that is so detrimental to quality of life.

GoldenOmber · 04/04/2022 14:50

Six YEAR waiting list? Bloody hell.

WouldBeGood · 04/04/2022 14:52

@Blimeyherewegoagain 😱 that's just terrible

OP posts:
readsalotgirl63 · 04/04/2022 15:30

I would say it is most definitely racism and should be reported

HappyPumpkin81 · 04/04/2022 17:52

@Scottishskifun I stopped following my local SNP MSP’s Facebook page as it was full of horrible comments like this, and no one was ever challenged for it.

Scottishskifun · 04/04/2022 18:55

Thanks ladies will report to their office @resiliencewanker yep I feel they will give me the line!

I really dread my DS when he reaches school age he has a English accent naturally from me and DH even though he's always lived in Scotland. I hate the thought of the vitriol seeping down to children's level.

Is it to early in the week for a vino? 😂

WouldBeGood · 04/04/2022 20:02

@Scottishskifun I really feel for you. Was thinking about this today, and how horrible it is. DS also sounds English, as his dad is, and gets hassle for it. He was upset in the last referendum although only six 🥲

Railing and then some to hear that @Scottishskifun
I’m so disgusted at what happened to you. I’m so sorry it did happen and glad you were able to call them out. Do officially report it if you feel able.

The really awful thing is, it’s not unique, but people are afraid to report Anglophobia, for fear of repercussions, so what the hell does that tell you about Scotland in 2022?

WouldBeGood · 04/04/2022 23:23

That’s true, @NowThatsWhatICall22 and if you replaced English with black it would be a no brainer to get the police involved 🤷🏻‍♀️Really horrible

I've also encountered the odd episode of anglophobia living in Scotland for the last 25 years.

The oddest moment happened during the last referendum. We were visiting our elderly neighbour in hospital (she had broken her hip and had dementia). Her son appeared and asked his mother why she didn't have her 'yes' badge on her dressing gown whilst looking pointedly at us. We left pretty soon after.

Scianel · 05/04/2022 17:30

I've not copped too much of it over the years as my accent is South African but there was one drunk guy in Paisley who clearly wasn't that clued up on geography who called me a "snobby English bitch" once.

I've mentioned before though how a so-called friend, in the run-up to the last indyref, told me that I shouldn't be eligible to vote as I "wasn't Scottish".

The referendum certainly did bring out the worst in a lot of people. I'm sorry you had to deal with that.

I stopped discussing it outside the house as it just prompted nasty comments. I've never experienced such a contentious vote until then.

Scianel · 05/04/2022 18:19

tigger1001 the mad part was that I didn't have a strong opinion particularly (then! I certainly do now) and just tended towards status quo being safer but that rather mild statement raised ire.
Really hoping there's not a round 2.

WouldBeGood · 05/04/2022 18:42

I don't think many people have an appetite for round two after the last time, Brexit and Covid, now paying for it all. I think oriole just want peace!

OP posts:
Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 05/04/2022 18:55

I think that's probably true @WouldBeGood, only about a third of Scots want another referendum in the next couple of years. It's all moot anyway of course, because no matter how much Nicola bangs on about her 'mandate' for Indyref2, Westminster will just exercise their democratic mandate to not grant another vote, and since the power lies with them, that's that!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 05/04/2022 19:43

I hate how bitterly divisive things were last time around. I can't even speak to my family about it. They're all rampant Indy supporters, which I respect, but sadly they can't respect my views. It led to some horrible conversations with them and I can't bear the thought of going through it again.

I also have a couple of people in my team who insisted on talking about it all the time - one a full on queen nic fan who doesn't have enough political knowledge to back up anything he says and another who thinks the snp are dreadful but will keep voting for them until we have independence then 'everyone will vote Labour again'. The thought of it fills me with dread!

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 06/04/2022 10:17

So the Tories are pledging that councils they run will respect single sex spaces (toilets, changing facilities) etc. as per the recent legal ruling. Is the tide finally turning on this? More people seem willing to put their head above the parapet and call out this nonsense for the misogyny that it is.

mapleleavesreturn · 06/04/2022 10:42

I'd like a bit of freedom from politicians, having to watch their spin, self aggrandisement and over simplification of complex issues. I'm sure a lot of people feel political fatigue by this point.

WouldBeGood · 06/04/2022 10:50

That’s really great news@Y0uCann0tBeSer10us. I think the tide may be turning.
