The railing never ends.

No resilience wankery, all railing welcome, along with good things or humorous asides.

Ah it's actually 5th night not 4th!

mibbelucieachwell · 30/11/2021 20:44

I agree @Scottishskifun . I was shocked to hear the extent of the damage on Monday morning on radio Scotland. I was especially shocked to hear how many phone masts were down and how many people have no water.

ElephantOfRisk · 30/11/2021 20:52

It also appears that people have no way of calling 999 as both landlines and mobile signals have gone, plus no way of charging a phone so if anyone has any battery left after 5 days they are doing well.

mibbelucieachwell · 30/11/2021 20:55

I don't remember ever being in such a poor situation in the power cuts of the 70s in the North Isles.

Scottishskifun · 30/11/2021 21:08

Yep it's been really bad it's not a power cut that lasts a day or so.
To many it feels like rural areas don't matter given how little info there has been or external support to the councils.

The power company engineers have been working day and night it's just disappointing and frustrating that such a major thing has largely been ignored and external help for getting generators, water etc incredibly slow.

ElephantOfRisk · 30/11/2021 21:10

It's the fact that it's just not been publicised well and no rally of locals to provide help and support etc

WouldBeGood · 30/11/2021 21:33

Long time without power 💐

OP posts:
Scottishskifun · 30/11/2021 21:37

All the local support has been via social media Facebook requests which is fine if you still have phone signal etc but not otherwise. There has been lots of stuff from worried family members and people in areas with power picking it up and doing some check but yep no real coordinated way to check on vulnerable etc.

Petrol pumps are out due to no electricity so people can't be doing massive miles if the surrounding stations are out and you can easily go 30-50 miles between petrol stations up here in some parts.

ElephantOfRisk · 30/11/2021 21:41

yes, i've just seen that police are carrying out increased patrols in the areas near me that still have folk with no power etc, but as people keep pointing out, it's gone on so long that there needs to be door to door welfare checks. Facebook stuff I've seen giving details of welfare stations and numbers to call for transport but if you can't see the message and can't phone anyway it's not much good.

WouldBeGood · 30/11/2021 21:43

When I lived in the wilds I had a special plug in landline telephone for power cuts, and a wood burner

OP posts:
Scottishskifun · 30/11/2021 21:49

Yes we have a wood burner many do around here but any new builds don't nor does any council housing and people have been encouraged to switch from generators to green systems.....which need electricity.

ElephantOfRisk · 30/11/2021 21:51

They've said that even systems in place to ensure that people had access to 999 services are out.

You mean an old fashioned corded phone. 😜 Is old enough to have a spinny dial that confuses any one under the age of 25?

I never thought about petrol pumps not working because running the car is an other way to charge phones.

Just awful they really are at the stage they should be finding hotel rooms for people. But that is of limited help to people with animals who need looking after. Even if it gives people time for a shower, hot food, charge phones or for one partner to stay while the other checks the animals.

Awful these people have been ignored

WouldBeGood · 01/12/2021 08:08

@Lockdownbear I am old 🤣

They are now saying Friday for some people before they get power, awful absolutely awful.

I know not that high on priority lists but what about people with tropical fish or reptiles that need heat too.
Shelters should have been set up, get the village halls running on a generator something anything don't leave people with out power for days on end.

Scottishskifun · 01/12/2021 15:19

Yep they said this last night.
There are some shelters now open but they are not overnight. It's still incredibly slow on welfare checks and many people can't leave pets etc to go stay in a hotel. They also need to pay for the hotel upfront and claim back. Power company have said "reasonable costs" but hotels up here are few and far between in rural parts and not cheap!
Some have been taking people in free of charge but likes of Braemar the hotel there is about £300+ a night......and that's presuming they have power!

That is good news 😊

Noted that FV nhs is not reducing the vaccine boosters gap. They also seem to be cancelling a lot of appointments.

A cynic might think that they are attempting to improve their service level stats...
