I'm in the car reading a few threads where folks are fed up with the misery and fighting so thought I'd start a new thread. Not for politics or covid or fighting , just general stuff 🙂

I've had a nice day, off work on hols so we took a wee drive down to Peebles and had lunch, bought a few pies from lovely butcher and now heading home.

I presumed it was "dis"guising but all the same really. Hate it being called Trick or treating here. That's not really the same thing at all.

I always insist on saying "guising" Grin - and refuse to accept "trick or treating" except in the context of asking "are you going to do a trick ie a joke or a treat a piece ?"

Re "being gated" - I think it is a real expression Wink

Yep I think your right on the word, I just associated it for the first few years with penny for the guy until my friend told me 😂 I also got in trouble for then saying so it's the same as trick or treating..... Oops!

I haven't actually ever seen penny for the guy in Scotland don't know if its a thing here? I think it's dying out in most of England but was a big part of fireworks night where I lived previously.

sartorius · 20/10/2021 13:20

I was brought up with guising but unfortunately my kids are trick or treatersBlush

KittenKong · 20/10/2021 13:22

Guising was great - you had to ‘work’ for your sweeties! I still remember my poem from the year I was a witch.

Hey ho for Halloween
Where the witches to be seen
Some in black and some in green
Hey ho for Halloween!

I consider it your duty as a parent to sort that out! Grin

Penny for the guy was really just in comics when I was wee. Though we did make a guy to put at the top of the bonfire and we all wrapped our tatties in tin foil and rolled them into the bottom of the fire to eat when burnt on the outside and raw in the centre...

Ah my mum did go to private school with boarders.

sartorius · 20/10/2021 13:31

I know, I've failed miserably @ElephantOfRisk
I'm in a trick or treat area nowConfused

Sadiequeenofscots · 20/10/2021 13:31

Can I join please?

I’ve never really looked on Scotsnet before so was happy to find this thread.

You’ve made me want lentil soup. I have a big bag of carrots so think will make a pot today. The DC devour it! It’s nicer today but still cold enough for a nice big bowl of soup.

I also have trick or treaters Blush

Sadiequeenofscots · 20/10/2021 13:33

@ssd

I think it might be an ayrshire thing calling it that, from way back. My dad Probably said it. He would have been 100 this year if he'd still been here. I miss him, and mum. I've not been parented in a long long while.
My mum died earlier this year @ssd. I miss her so much too Flowers
Classica · 20/10/2021 13:33

@shouldistop

Oh god? Who does spooky offend?! Goths?
no one banned it. It was some made up bullshit in a tabloid that people who love to be outraged decided to believe.
sartorius · 20/10/2021 13:37

Welcome Sadie
I'm so sorry to hear about your mumThanks

shouldistop · 20/10/2021 14:29

Penny for the guy wasn't really a thing when I was wee. I knew about it but we didn't do it.

My dad and other local dads used to do a fireworks display for the neighbourhood on a clear bit of ground nearby. Was brilliant fun.

I'm just planning guy fawkes now Grin we're going to have mugs of soup and buttered bread in the garden with the log burner on then we'll toast marshmallows. Then we'll walk up the hill with a thermos of hot chocolate to watch the fireworks over Glasgow. Will mention it to a couple of school families nearby incase they want to join us Smile

The weather better not ruin my Halloween or guy fawkes plans!

Sounds wonderful Smile our local display won’t be on again this year so we will do a small display in the garden, with sparklers and marshmallows too.

We also often go for a drive - my DC wear their jammies and we follow the fireworks!

shouldistop · 20/10/2021 14:42

@Sadiequeenofscots that sounds nice! We've too many trees behind our house to do fireworks Sad
I like the idea of a drive but baby ds would fall asleep then not go to bed Grin maybe when he's older.

dementedpixie · 20/10/2021 15:20

We used to have fireworks in the back garden (which is really not large enough for them) but stopped when we got the cats a few years ago. Our local displays are cancelled too

My dd was a 5th of November baby - couldn't get hold of anyone to tell them she was born as they were all at fireworks displays!

GrouchyKiwi · 20/10/2021 16:38

[flowers} for all of you missing your parents.

DH, who is a Scot brought up in exile in England, insists that the children must call it guising. As a Kiwi I have no skin in the game since we didn't do Halloween at all when I were a lass. They're doing it a bit more now, I think.

My girls always tell a joke, like What is a vampire's favourite fruit?*

We went to the National Museum of Flight today. It's very good and definitely worth a visit. Bloody freezing wind, though, so take a warm jacket and some gloves!

titsintiers · 20/10/2021 17:37

I was sure you were going to say Neck-tarine there @GrouchyKiwi

Boom boom, I'll get my coat

WouldBeGood · 20/10/2021 17:39

🤣🤣

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 20/10/2021 17:42

Ooh I forgot there was now a lovely cha thread. Hello! Smile

DH just brought haggis home for tea, and because the kids were treated to Five Guys by my Mum earlier, they're not hungry, hurrah!!

ALL THE HAGGIS for me!!!

(I've been dieting for ages and have lost 23 pounds, I weighed myself today! But I'm letting myself eat haggis. I can't resist.)

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 20/10/2021 17:43

Cha thread? Confused

Anybody up for a cha cha? Or is it a cha cha cha? I never know.

WouldBeGood · 20/10/2021 17:45

A-may-zing! On the weight loss, in Strictly style, @BlameItOnTheBlackStar

GrouchyKiwi · 20/10/2021 17:49

I will pass on that variation to my children titsintiers. They'll love it.

Congrats on the weight loss, BlackStar. Enjoy the haggis!
