I'm in the car reading a few threads where folks are fed up with the misery and fighting so thought I'd start a new thread. Not for politics or covid or fighting , just general stuff 🙂

I've had a nice day, off work on hols so we took a wee drive down to Peebles and had lunch, bought a few pies from lovely butcher and now heading home.

Some of the stuff was quite "colourful" Grin

I'm not very good at making things so just shop bought costumes here. I think ds is going to be Spider-Man for the second year running! I prefer spooky costumes and will be a skeleton this year Grin
Ds doesn't like 'chewy sweeties' so we ended up with loads left over last year that dh ate Grin
We were in America in October 2019 and the houses, shops, bars etc were amazing, I think that's what sparked ds love of Halloween actually. He called sweeties 'candy' for ages after it.

Ds is making up his own jokes "why did the ghost get stuck on the road? Because a poo fell on him" Blush
"Why did the zombie want to eat brains? Because he was silly"

ElephantOfRisk · 19/10/2021 19:26

That's about the usual joke standard @shouldistop. I'm sure DS will look cute and you extra spooky... though apparently that word has been banned in case it offends

My favourite kids joke is "What's brown and sticky?" A stick of course!

shouldistop · 19/10/2021 19:27

Oh god? Who does spooky offend?! Goths?

dementedpixie · 19/10/2021 19:29

I looked this up. Apparently a derogatory term against black people

shouldistop · 19/10/2021 19:35

Oops, I had no idea!

ElephantOfRisk · 19/10/2021 19:39

No-one did, no-one has complained, they've just decided to ban it just in case. My DM had a pet called spooky, no doubt she'd have to get him put down if wither of them were still alive. He was named that as he looked like he was wearing a ghost costume with the black circles round his eyes and otherwise white.

We used to get together with a few other parents and go to each child's house guising. They all had their joke, poem, song or dance. We used to be walking home from the school run and people with younger children asked us to go to the door. So they got round a few places making happy neighbours. We never went without an invite. We do have a pumpkin rule now. Only go to houses with pumpkins.

shouldistop · 19/10/2021 20:15

Yeah, it seems to be an unspoken rule that round here you only go to houses with decorations. There's enough of them anyway Smile
Dh and baby ds will stay at home to answer the door.

ElephantOfRisk · 19/10/2021 20:17

Same rule round here about pumpkins/decorations. Always plenty houses to go to.

I’ve booked to go to France Christmas time! I know they’re Covid mad, but it’s a wee house in a village I’ve stayed in before, lovely. And it has a wood burner. I’ll take the tunnel so should bed easy 😃

titsintiers · 19/10/2021 20:29

Marvellous at @WouldBeGood

I've had to remind my kids it's not trick or treating but guising, they're not having it.

WouldBeGood · 19/10/2021 20:31

Guising is such a good word too @titsintiers

Mine never had it either 🤷🏻‍♀️

ssd · 19/10/2021 20:39

Aww fab @WouldBeGood, something really nice to look forward to.

Did anyone call guising going out in the gloshens? God knows where we got that from..

WouldBeGood · 19/10/2021 20:42

Thanks guys!

Never heard that @ssd but it sounds great 🤣

Groovee · 19/10/2021 21:46

Mine still call it guising.

@WouldBeGood that sounds lovely

ssd · 20/10/2021 08:43

I think it might be an ayrshire thing calling it that, from way back. My dad Probably said it. He would have been 100 this year if he'd still been here. I miss him, and mum. I've not been parented in a long long while.

titsintiers · 20/10/2021 09:58

I miss mine too @ssd 🌷I'm only early forties, it feels very unjust

shouldistop · 20/10/2021 10:00

@ssd Thanks my dad died in December 2019, he was only 61 Sad
I miss him every day. I used to always ask him for advice and really miss that. He was very level headed - unlike my mum who's a panic merchant Hmm

BingBongToTheMoon · 20/10/2021 10:03

I’m in deepest, darkest Ayrshire and have never heard that @ssd. I suppose it would depend on which part of Ayrshire.

GreenTeaBlackCoffeeAndRedWine · 20/10/2021 10:25

I too am in Ayrshire and not heard this @ssd

Groovee · 20/10/2021 12:11

@ssd

Aww fab *@WouldBeGood*, something really nice to look forward to.

Maybe like my mum. She would I say I was gated when she meant grounded 😂😂
Scottishskifun · 20/10/2021 12:30

When I first moved to Scotland I found guising really confusing word as I thought they were a week early asking for penny for the guy for bonfire night 😂

I don't think we will take DS this year as he's a little bit too young still he's also a full on covid toddler and still finds situations difficult!

shouldistop · 20/10/2021 12:40

@Scottishskifun yeah, he's probably too little to enjoy it. Ds1 enjoyed handing out sweeties to the guisers at the door when he was smaller. First time going out was last year when he was 4 and this year will be his first proper experience of it at 5.

shouldistop · 20/10/2021 12:40

I think guising comes from the word 'disguised'
