I'm in the car reading a few threads where folks are fed up with the misery and fighting so thought I'd start a new thread. Not for politics or covid or fighting , just general stuff 🙂

I've had a nice day, off work on hols so we took a wee drive down to Peebles and had lunch, bought a few pies from lovely butcher and now heading home.

Liverpool has a lovely energy :)

That sounds nice, I'm trying to cook more and make different meals

I agree re dobbies @ElephantOfRisk I liked the food area as it was, sainsbury is just down the road so not sure the reasoning. Do like a mooch round Lakeland & dobbies pet area is good. Am getting very boring.
I can see the Wallace monument & the castle from the house, although it’s been that miserable the last few days I’ve not looked outside much.

Can’t sleep so excuse my ramblings, my mum is in the south of England & said it was 20c there and quite warm, such a contrast. I do like a macaroni pie although haven’t had one in years, pastry has to be good. Anyway nice to meet you all 😄

titsintiers · 19/10/2021 07:22

What about a small city like York, Bath or Chester @WouldBeGood lots of little nooks and crannies for mooching about. Accommodation with a hot tub?

ssd · 19/10/2021 08:09

Of course, its cavern club, not cabin like i said. Yes, Liverpool is good to wander around in. Im glad im not missing much avoiding the ferry Smile

ssd · 19/10/2021 08:31

We were out a drive the other day, it was dry but not sunny. So we passed a field, all the cows were sitting down. I immediately said, the cows are sitting down its going to rain. I grew up near the countryside, i must have heard this somewhere. Anyway about a few miles along it did rain. Then it turned dry and in the next field the cows were all standing up Smile

Has anyone else heard of this?

ElephantOfRisk · 19/10/2021 10:52

Nice to meet you too @Etonmessisyum Smile

Yes re the cows @ssd, though the running joke in our house became, "oh look, the cows are lying down, you know what that means?" Chorus from the back seat of the car "yeah it means their legs are tired" Grin

Quiet day for me today. Dropped DH at the gym and supposed to be doing housework but not sure I can be bothered - start after lunch is sounding like a plan. Anyone up to anything nice?

BingBongToTheMoon · 19/10/2021 10:59

I’m going to do a practice run of tablet for Halloween.

ElephantOfRisk · 19/10/2021 11:07

I've never made tablet. I should hang my head in shame....

I think I can remember my sisters making it when I was a kid but it's just not something I've done myself. I never have sugar in the house though so that's possibly why Grin I do like a bit of nice tablet.

OP posts:
ElephantOfRisk · 19/10/2021 11:08

Do you hand it out to guisers BingBong?

OP posts:
BingBongToTheMoon · 19/10/2021 11:10

No, I don’t let in.
We have a huge extended family and my dad is awfy fond of it, so it doesn’t go to waste.

Groovee · 19/10/2021 11:18

I made tablet earlier in the year using bakingwithgranny.co.uk/recipe/scottish-tablet/ this recipe. Going to make it to make a cheesecake for Christmas with.

ElephantOfRisk · 19/10/2021 11:19

There are already halloween decorations round our estate. I stopped doing it when DC got to mid teens and didn't go out and wouldn't do the door either. We started just going out. It's at the weekend this year and we have quite a few DC in our street of guising age so I might make up some bags just for them. Honestly some years we had hundreds at the door starting from 5ish until 9 or 10pm.

OP posts:
DrWankincense · 19/10/2021 11:41

I also say the same about the cows @ssd.
I'm wondering how things will be re guisers this year?
We are going to a school Halloween disco so events are happening and there are a few houses decked out already.

ElephantOfRisk · 19/10/2021 11:50

Tablet cheesecake sounds good. I usually just buy desserts at Christmas. I enjoy making the Christmas dinner but no-one seems that fussed on desserts and it's usually just the 4 of us. This year I have no idea yet what DS2 will be doing so I suppose it could be just 3.

OP posts:
Groovee · 19/10/2021 11:53

Dd asked her boyfriend could come for Christmas dinner. So will make the tablet then grate it and make a cheesecake about the 21st/22nd.

ElephantOfRisk · 19/10/2021 11:58

Yes, DS2 has his girlfriend so not sure if they will want to spend Christmas together or each with their own families and meet up after/in-between.

last year they both came back from Uni and spent the holidays with their own families but think DS went to theirs on New Years day. but that was midst covid restrictions etc so not sure this year.

I'd miss him but I'm not precious about it and have said to him at some point during the year that he should do what he would like to and that they are both welcome to come at any point, there is not much more you can say really.

OP posts:
ssd · 19/10/2021 12:18

Similar here, its usually just us 4 and I'm sure it will be the same this Xmas. Im not precious either, but i would hate it if they always went to the girlfriends family like you see happens sometimes on here.
Anyway, ive been down the shops and now waiting for a delivery. Am watching rhoc in the meantime. I love it, and rhobh. Its just escapism.
Dull and dreich again. I could go some homemade tablet ...👍

ssd · 19/10/2021 12:22

We stopped going Halloween when the boys stopped going out. Before that it would start around 5pm and keep going till we ran out. Id have loads of wee bags made up and all the decorations out. We cleared the loft last week and binned it all. I was never great at making costumes, ds1 wore a scream mask and a black cape for years Grin, if asda didn't sell it that was that. So now we close the curtains to keep the guisers out. And there always seems to be a football game on when its Halloween so dh is glad it's stopped

Groovee · 19/10/2021 12:26

Got my mum amd dh's parents coming. I'm hoping the rest of the in-laws don't try to invite themselves like they often try. Last Christmas was awful and I just want a quiet one this year x

dementedpixie · 19/10/2021 12:41

We just usually have the 4 of us at Christmas and then visit my mum on boxing day or later. She had 5 kids and can't cope with us all at once.

We stopped Halloween a couple of years ago and I used to carve pumpkins every year.

Today I've been to body pump and attack and later I need to take my mum for her covid booster and flu jab (1 in each arm). Have to take her to Ravenscraig sports centre as all the smaller centres seen to have stopped now.

GrouchyKiwi · 19/10/2021 12:54

I'm sure that piece of knowledge about cows and rain was in an episode of Ben & Holly.

I spent a couple of hours chatting to my Mum in NZ this morning, and completely neglecting the children. Was lovely. Grin Thankfully they played nicely instead of murdering each other, so that was a win.

It's just us for Christmas this year too, which is my favourite thing. No stress about in laws, or having extras in the house, or needing to travel. Hooray!

ElephantOfRisk · 19/10/2021 12:56

I'm hoping we have the pub open again on Christmas day. Missed it last year. Nice just to get everything prepped, have a wee walk to the pub and then back again to get dinner finished.

Jumping in to an earlier part of the conversation: we keep on meaning to watch the first series of Guilt, so that we can watch the second series Confused

Parts of the 2nd series were filmed in the street next to (above) us and at night it was like having a second moon as there was a cherry picker with an extremely bright light for filming, hovering above the house Shock

UmpteenthTime · 19/10/2021 13:07

prettybird that’s interesting.
As soon as we saw the beautiful, big, sandstone villa in the second series, we thought Pollokshields!
Were we right?
We really enjoyed both series.
Great to watch something Scottish.
( didn’t enjoy Vigil )
