I'm in the car reading a few threads where folks are fed up with the misery and fighting so thought I'd start a new thread. Not for politics or covid or fighting , just general stuff 🙂

I've had a nice day, off work on hols so we took a wee drive down to Peebles and had lunch, bought a few pies from lovely butcher and now heading home.

I was at rugby training last night and have a game tomorrow (albeit only on the bench). I foolhardedly decide to start playing last year before lockdown at the age of 58 Shockbut because of lockdown I was 60 before I got my first game (in September). This was last weekend! Grin

We won our first game 0-64 and out 2nd game 71-0 Smile that's why I got on the last 10 minutes in both games Wink

Is that a Hamilton rugby kit there on the right?

prettybird · 23/10/2021 15:40

Yes it is - well spotted Smile

I managed to put in my first ever proper a tackle on a woman mountain of theirs. It might have taken two of us but we got her down Grin Dh even said my technique was good it's not usually Wink

dementedpixie · 23/10/2021 15:43

My ds plays for Hamilton and dh coaches there too

GrouchyKiwi · 23/10/2021 15:58

Looks great Groovee.

Taking up rugby at 58 is brilliant! Well done on your first tackle prettybird! Grin

Feeling sorry for myself today with a sore throat and general malaise. Two of the children are unwell too. I've had a nap on the sofa, watched the birds (and giant squirrel) enjoy our bird feeder, and hung out a couple of loads of washing. DH has tried to play a fun board game with the girls, but they're all fighty so that didn't go so well.

Groovee · 23/10/2021 16:14

@ElephantOfRisk it's from the range. I couldn't find anything but then saw this in the range and had to order it. Love it. Our previous one was lovely with green flowers that I loved. The living room and dining room is the only wallpapered rooms. The rest is tiles or paint.

@prettybird go you.

@GrouchyKiwi feel better soon.

Ordering a Chinese take away soon.

sartorius · 23/10/2021 16:14

Well done you taking up rugby at 58 prettybird if a little foolhardyGrin
and congratulations on you 1st tackle

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 23/10/2021 16:18

Wow @prettybird you're amazing!

I took DS to the cinema today, and it was the first time he's been since November 2018. I had a wee lump in my throat at his smiley face 😊

prettybird · 23/10/2021 16:40

I've still to touch the ball in a game though Wink

....that's my next objective Grin

Dh (who is qualified as both a referee and a coach Wink) said that I was usually in the right place, looking the right way and blocking the opposition's options Smile even if he says I need to learn to run like a rugby player Hmm

I get shouted at/helped a lot on the pitch though to make sure I'm in the right place Grin

This is of course the 2nd team (we think that we're the only club in Scotland putting out two teams in recognised leagues). There are 3 of us in the Forwards who have a combined age of 176 Shock (one of the others of whom is the guilty party for getting me to play as she'd been nagging me for so long Grin)

I'm enjoying it because everyone in the Women's section is really friendly, sociable and welcoming.

sartorius · 23/10/2021 16:51

This is seriously impressive Shock

WouldBeGood · 23/10/2021 17:24

I spent mu entire school sporting career trying to do the opposite, @prettybird and making sure I never touched a hockey or lacrosse ball 🤣 Bloody impressed with you!

prettybird · 23/10/2021 17:51

@WouldBeGood - I was the same Grin Hated team sports and did ballet/played the flute instead. I was crap at throwing a ball (in fact any ball sports). Only learnt half-decent hand-eye coordination at about 30 when a previous boyfriend got me into clay pigeon shooting.

I had genuinely never thrown or caught a rugby ball until last year, despite ds, now 21 and a very good scrum half playing rugby since he was 5 Shock He did all that sort of stuff with his dad So I might know the laws and the principles of the game (from watching ds from the touchline for 16 years) but I am genuinely starting from scratch re the practical aspects Confused

WouldBeGood · 23/10/2021 18:37

I really am I
Pressed @prettybird. I might try cricket next year inspired by this, as I did a wee bit when ds played and enjoyed that

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 23/10/2021 18:42

Got room for another who likes a blether? I was drawn in by the mention of lentil soup at the start of the thread, though appreciate that the chat has moved on a bit. I love a good lentil soup.

I have mostly been in my pj's today, for no other reason than I could. It was brilliant.

WouldBeGood · 23/10/2021 18:44

Controversially, I put celery in my lentil soup

GrouchyKiwi · 23/10/2021 18:55

Hi WhatWouldTheDoctorDo.

I also put celery in my lentil soup; I start with a soffritto.

Lidlfix · 23/10/2021 19:07

Can I interrupt nutritious soup chat to ask if anyone has been near M&S recently and knows if the clementine snow globe gin liquor is still in stock? I have managed to get the spiced plum and the vanilla rum but would love to complete the set.

I would love to try (walking maybe since I am fat and unfit) netball again . Think a team sport could really benefit me.

Wbeezer · 23/10/2021 19:16

I too put celery in my lentil soup and sometimes a wee bit of garlic but i dont put any potato in, makes it too thick for my taste

Wbeezer · 23/10/2021 19:17

I spotted the clementine gin in M&S in St Andrews today @Lidlfix

Groovee · 23/10/2021 19:22

I put celery in my lentil soup too.

rjacksmiss · 23/10/2021 19:30

Btw - does anyone remember wedding scrambles from when they were little? My DP just dropped a load of change and I was like "weeeey, scramble" and he was so confused by it. I explained it was the father of the bride who threw a bag of change out to the kids as the bride got in the car and he's still like - eh? I'm not imagining this am I?

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 23/10/2021 19:33

Not imagining it @rjacksmiss I remember those!

Anyone want to share their full
Lentil soup recipe? I feel I've never got it quite right. With our without celery. Smile

No idea about those gin liquors @Lidlfix but I think I'll be going in search of some now, they sound bloody lovely!

ElephantOfRisk · 23/10/2021 19:43

Loved a good scramble!

My lentil soup is fairly basic and cheatery.

Chopped onion sweated off, add in half a 500g bag of rinsed red lentils, chuck in a couple of ham stock cubes and boiling water. Add in a couple of grated carrots, plenty ground pepper and a wee splash of lea and perrins. Cook for about 20 mins to half an hour (till lentils cooked basically) and then blend. In a separate pan I likely toast some shop bought shredded ham hock or chopped up bacon and then toss it through before serving. Taste for salt.

Proper method would be to boil a ham hock to make proper stock and then skim off the stock before using but I A: can't be bothered and B: find that most ham hock is smoked and it just makes it too salty for me.

ElephantOfRisk · 23/10/2021 19:45

"lightly" not "likely"!

Just be wary of adding in too much extra water when the lentils start to get really thick, about 5 minutes later the lentils go more mushy and release the liquid again so if you add too much water it ends up really thin or you need to simmer off some of the liquid.

I had a scramble at my wedding (child bride well 21 and 26 years ago) the chauffeur of the bridal cars asked DH to throw well away from the car Grin. We were considered posh as we had some pound coins and 50ps .

When my Dsis got married a few years later she didn't.
