I'm in the car reading a few threads where folks are fed up with the misery and fighting so thought I'd start a new thread. Not for politics or covid or fighting , just general stuff 🙂

I've had a nice day, off work on hols so we took a wee drive down to Peebles and had lunch, bought a few pies from lovely butcher and now heading home.

I've never been to a wedding with a scramble.
Is it a regional thing or are all the people I know too mean?

dementedpixie · 23/10/2021 20:16

I remember one of my neighbours doing this as the bride left the house (I would have been a teen at the time). Think it was coppers rather than silver coins though

ElephantOfRisk · 23/10/2021 20:30

I don't know it's regional? I'm from Edinburgh originally and it was a frequent thing growing up. I didn't have one as I left for my wedding from my sister's flat and not with my dad.

Glasgow - oh yes! Scramble!!!

ssd · 23/10/2021 20:59

God i loved a scramble!! That and a balloon on a stick from the rag and bone man and i was happy.

Biscoffee · 23/10/2021 21:08

We call it a Scrammy on the East Coast. I loved them.

prettybird · 23/10/2021 21:09

Copper coins and maybe a sixpence (a shilling if you were really lucky Wink) at the scrambles at the church on my way home from primary school pre-decimalisation. This was in Bearsden.

ssd · 23/10/2021 21:25

Does anyone remember Spanish tobacco, a wee rectangular red waxy packet of coconut rolled in something like cinnamon? Bloody lovely. And lucky potatoes, with a plastic sweety in it, coated in a brown sweet powder? I'd love to taste them again. I've seen them sold in ye olde fashioned sweet shops like in the Barras , but they are never the same.

ElephantOfRisk · 23/10/2021 21:28

Oh I loved those too @ssd. Nothing seems to taste the same now, I think it's probably because half the ingredients have been banned. That might be a benefit to being out of the EU, they might be able to use all that stuff again in the UK! Grin

I don't remember lucky potatoes but dh exploded, saying, "We had this conversation recently, they're called Tobermory Tatties" Grin

ssd · 23/10/2021 21:57

Oohhh i love some homemade tablet, luckily I don't know how to make it.....I'd be eating it for dinner..Grin

prettybird · 23/10/2021 22:00

I have to make a batch tonight for after the rugby game. I'm on the MN BootCamp at the moment - HFLC Shock

So I can't eat a single piece Halo

ElephantOfRisk · 23/10/2021 22:14

I think I said earlier that I've never made tablet. Actually given how much of a sweet tooth I have, it's amazing that I don't make anything sweet. I cook a lot but I don't bake or do desserts. DS and I have signed up for a beginners baking night class in January so hoping that goes ahead.

Hairy bikers spanish tray bake for dinner tomorrow and I also need to portion up and freeze all the costco meat and fish.

Ill need to Google that hairy bikers recipe, sounds lovely.

dementedpixie · 23/10/2021 22:17

We like the Spanish chicken too although I'm not sure it ends up the diet version its supposed to be when dh is finished with it!

ElephantOfRisk · 23/10/2021 22:19

And that is a difficult job @pb - well done on the rugby too!

He sometimes adds chunks of black pudding which is tasty

prettybird · 23/10/2021 22:20

Took me 13 batches to learn to make tablet consistently well: changed recipes half way through to the one my Dad said my mum has asterisked as "*The Best" Smile Have the different stages timed down to the second. Grin

I love baking: biscuits, cakes and sourdough bread and croissants. Just as well I have family and friends who enjoy the produce when I can't eat it Halo

ElephantOfRisk · 23/10/2021 22:20

here you go:

I just use garlic paste or chopped garlic as DH is too lazy to be bothered with the cloves. I do make more potatoes and veg (and probably a bit more chorizo) as we use it for a side dish next day after we've scoffed all the chicken

We freeze the leftover veg and then reheat with extra chicken and crispy potatoes to add texture

ElephantOfRisk · 23/10/2021 22:25

I think I cook as it's a necessity for us to eat, but when I was working full time with the kids doing activities every evening and weekends, desserts and baking just wasn't a priority to be made time for. The oven isn't great as it has hot spots too. I have the time now though so it would be good to get into doing it.

I have costco chicken schnitzels so it'll go well with those. I sometimes add eggs to the leftovers and make it into a frittata thing.
