That documentary was really good I thought, although I felt I could have watched a few episodes on the Good Friday Agreement alone!

I agree, it's very difficult to see now where an effective opposition would come from. And it made me sad. I know Blair ended up being quite notorious due to Iraq but do you remember the 96 election? The 90s in general actually.

It was a time of real optimism. Things can only get better and Britpop and the Berlin Wall had fallen, social media hadn't arrived yet...it felt very free compared to now.

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 19/10/2021 09:10

Sorry, 97! Fat fingers Smile

mapleleavesreturn · 19/10/2021 09:35

I'd agree about the late 90s and early 00s but I'm scared of moaning further! Pervasive moaner here.

I can't see many reasons for optimism on the political landscape (surprise) - Jess Phillips is inspirational but she's effectively a toxic hate figure for the Corbyn wing of labour so I don't see that happening.

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 19/10/2021 09:49

Yeah, a lot of people couldn't be persuaded to vote for a mouthy woman, unfortunately. I think that's exactly what we need, frankly.

ssd · 19/10/2021 10:11

Moan away @mapleleavesreturn

Scottishskifun · 19/10/2021 10:47

I'm railing at the miserable sods who are criticising Highlands Council for having a fireworks display this year due to "covid"🙄

It's in the rules that they can, it's a locked event yet still people are moaning enough for it to hit the BBC which doesn't bode well for Christmas events either!!!
I just hope SG doesn't wade in and put pressure on them to cancel it!

Our area half local displays are going ahead and other half not due to difficulties managing/volunteers bamboozled!
I much prefer the organised events as it's safer and over with quicker instead of loads of random houses (I have a dog!)

Notamultitasker · 19/10/2021 11:00

Glad there's a laid back thread now as I can see how it's needed sometimes.

However I'm also very grateful for the guilt free railings. Many of my friends especially on social media are still very defensive of the SNP because they believe they'll deliver Indyref2 - something I believe is becoming increasingly unlikely. But even if we do become independent under the SNP, who do we blame when the Tories are no longer in the picture? Reading these posts makes me realise I'm not losing the plot.

ElephantOfRisk · 19/10/2021 11:00

I think our one is going ahead this year (run by the Round Table). local pub is doing burgers etc outside to watch them.

ElephantOfRisk · 19/10/2021 11:05

I think all the threads are needed and people should feel free to start any in the spirit that they feel.

It's good to have one for moaning, one with good info on the covid stuff and one for general chitchat. Sometimes feel we should start one just for fighting though....

Scottishskifun · 19/10/2021 11:20

DH has just said that SG changed the legislation and guidelines for fireworks last week so they don't count as requiring vaccine passports if unticketed (pay on entry or free) and planned to be above 4000. But this hasn't been highlighted by them or in the media (just sent to EHOs) and for many 2 weeks before is way too late.

It's this sort of stuff which really pisses me off! Last minute changes which actually they could have seen and clarified ages ago so that events could run, people don't waste time and those assisting events organisers then don't have to change advice again!

Groovee · 19/10/2021 11:25

Just seen that pupils will be wearing masks in schools. Not read any of the stories as I'm disappointed that I was right.

Lockdownbear · 19/10/2021 11:28

I've just read that too, Angry
Poor kids really awful they are being treated like that.

tiredoftiers · 19/10/2021 11:56

Just saw the mask wearing continues...... and despite it the numbers go up and down. Not gone up so much in England, and they're not wearing masks in school.
I was looking forward to the staggered start and finish times coming to an end.
Just done with it now. Scunnered with having to book activities and ending up there in the pouring rain, cause you've spent the money on the ticket so you've got to go.
Fed up with journalists/ opposition not asking for real facts and figures surrounding covid.

Scottishskifun · 19/10/2021 12:03

Not a surprise and again a shift in goal posts now associated with 12-15 year olds vaccination.
Next will be changes to double vax rules for 16 year olds and it will shift again.

Given numbers shot up with them and English numbers didn't see a completely bonkers spike I struggle with what the justification is! Poor bloody teenagers!

IsurviveonCoffeeandWinein2021 · 19/10/2021 12:39

Railing about humza fucking useless saying you can't take a screenshot of the vaccine passport app. How does he even have a job 🤦‍♀️

I thought Swinney took the biscuit but he is on another level. See a new variant is being monitored as well.

The masks on school kids is a disgrace when they are going ahead with Cop26

Lots of swear words coming out of me today. Urgh.

WouldBeGood · 19/10/2021 12:39

What are they saying now on the school kids? Scared to look!

I'm absolutely furious with the Scottish government and Doris and his cronies. How dare they treat us like this? What arrogance. They don't seem competent either. This thread has saved my sanity. All that 'Isn't NS doing such a good job of managing the pandemic response?' nonsense, that so many people seemed to think is frankly incredible. Yes, she's a better speaker but her response was very similar to Doris'.

At least she seems to have stopped the moral superiority act. I mean, she clearly doesn't know how to stand up to bullies - Stonewall and the football culture I'm looking at you. She can witter on about acting with love, solidarity, kindness blah blah but she cannot claim bravery as an snp/Scottish wha's like us quality.

School children (and anyone else for that matter) who have had a recent diagnosis of covid should be exempt from wearing masks. There's no justification for them. Given that they're supposed to protect the people around you it makes no sense at all. I hope someone asks a question about this. Presumably they either can't get themselves organised to provide a system for showing us or they won't because they think it'll be the thin end of the wedge for mask wearing compliance. If the latter, they can blooming well stand up and admit it. It's bad enough that they're using at to blackmail 12-15yo's to get the vaccine.

ResilienceWanker · 19/10/2021 14:11

The news about masks continuing in schools has really irritated me. I know it's no surprise, but their justification - that it's to give more time for 12-15 yo to be vaccinated - is so sly. So simultaneously the SG is saying "there is no pressure for younger teens to be vaccinated... the benefit is marginal to them, though may mean they don't get ill so don't need to miss so much school in isolation, but ultimately its up to individual families what to do" . But also, "unless more of you come forward to be jagged, you're all going to have to stay in at break time carry on wearing masks, because the 50% of you who have taken up our voluntary offer isn't enough". Yup, cos that's definitely not coercion at all...

Surely it would make more sense to ramp up the booster programme for the over 50s (was going to be rolled out more widely from the middle of this month, but now the middle of Nov apparently) if they are concerned about waning antibodies in the more vulnerable groups leading to increased cases, and as a result hospitalisations and deaths. Rather than further pushing the (exact same) vaccine to children who really don't need it and presumably aren't super-keen to have it, or they would already have come forward.

Yes I get that children HAVE to be in school, and the nature of that will mean they and their teachers are more likely to be exposed to the virus than an average member of the public who has more choice as to where they go, what they do and who they meet. But that's not really changed by the vaccine, given covid is unlikely to make children very ill in the first place (whether or not they are vaccinated), and teachers could be prioritised for boosters if that is a concern. And given the marginal benefit of your average teenager wearing your average mask in your average classroom (but not outside the school gates in many circumstances) I really don't think masks are worth the continued disruption to education to make whatever political point the SG is trying to make.

ElephantOfRisk · 19/10/2021 14:39

her response was very similar to Doris'.

I know you meant Boris but Doris so suits him.... Grin

mibbelucieachwell · 19/10/2021 15:01

I meant Doris. elephant Grin Used to be Dim n Doris. Carry on Doris now that he's made Carrie an honest wumman.

Apologies to anyone whose name is Doris though.

ElephantOfRisk · 19/10/2021 15:07

Ah I see Grin

That name is definitely due a reappearance along with the Ruby and Nora and the like.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 19/10/2021 15:29

Well said @ResilienceWanker 👏. The coercive strategies are not only completely immoral given that 12-15 year olds aren't at risk from COVID, but they're directed at completely the wrong demographic (see also, vaccine passports). The people we should be worrying about now are the elderly, who not only carry the greatest risk anyway (even when fully vaccinated) but are also most likely to be suffering waning immunity as they had their jags longer ago. These are the people most at risk from dying, and who are most likely to put the NHS under COVID-related pressure. All of our resources should be going into vaccinating these people, not bullying teenagers to get a jag they don't need (and may actually hurt them) just to get the overall numbers up.

ADreadedSunnyDay · 19/10/2021 16:41

I'm back in England for half term hols.Fewer and fewer masks IMO than back in July. Managed to forget about covid while out and about. Makes such a difference not seeing people masked up in the Spar shop. Am finding the return to Scotland harder and harder - bloody nanny centralised state that we've become

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 19/10/2021 17:31

Resources obviously are going into boosters though - my grandparents have had theirs, even my Dad who is 68!

runningpink · 19/10/2021 18:31

There was a pop up testing centre here today, for those with no symptoms.
what is the need for this waste of resources considering a lot of people are doing lateral flow at home.

Meanwhile they have drafted in army to help at the hospital and a relative who is a nurse is on her knees with no staff on the ward she is on, a patient who is violent all the time towards the staff etc

It’s ridiculous
