God I just saw the advert Confused

Her accent is fine, it's the fucking irritating tone of it. Very 'wha's like us' i.e. aren't Glaswegians fucking hilarious, the Scousers of Scotland.

Scottishskifun · 04/09/2021 20:44

😂 The gruffulo doric book is ace!

It is a very hard dialect to get and a fast farmer will leave me looking gormless but most things I can manage now after a decade my colleagues even bought me teach yourself doric books 😂

Lidlfix · 04/09/2021 20:49

I was railing because I don't think she's funny. I could list Scottish comedians, with strong accents and use the vernacular who I find hilarious Sanjeev Kholli, Karen Dunbar, Jane McCarry, Kevin Bridges .. But then I feel a bit awkward because they are all west central Scotland accents (I find Weegie in most of its uses pejorative, I am the offspring of east end overspill parents) and I am now wanting to rail about lack of regional representations in comedy. Smile

DS is at Aberdeen Uni but he still has his generic Scottish accent so far. My SiLs family are proper Doric. I've known them for over 40 years and i'm still clueless if I miss a word and they've carried on speaking - totally lose the plot. It's a bit like when I'm in a conference call with my offshore colleagues. I have to shut my eyes and sit completely still to shut out all senses other my hearing to make sure i pick everything up properly. They speak excellent english and most are really clear but sometimes it can be a mystery. It's being involved in business and working with colleagues in foreign countries that mean that I rarely now speak in my working class council estate east coast accent - until i meet up with my family!
Haudyourwheesht · 04/09/2021 20:55

@forfucksakenett

It's a perfectly valid form of communication/ way to speak.

I'm glad we're seeing more of it and hopefully the hyacinth bucket type snobbery will eventually disappear.

It is, but it has to be accepted that non Scottish people will find it more difficult to understand you. I've found it interesting seeing the new Celtic manager, who is Australian, in interviews. You see him really concentrate when he's being asked questions, and he's an English speaker, being questioned by generally articulate interviewers, with pretty mild accents.

forfucksakenett · 04/09/2021 21:01

@Haudyourwheesht of course but that gives rise to very interesting questions about what dialects we give privilege to and why. The more we hear varying dialects, the more people will get used to them.

It makes sense I suppose to have some sort of RP type neutral accent but giving space to a variety of dialects is never going to be a bad thing.

BroccoliFloret · 04/09/2021 21:01

Iain Stirling has an Edinburgh accent and is quite funny. And arguably a much better choice to communicate with the 18-3 party crowd who watch love island

OhWhatsTheDifference · 04/09/2021 21:07

@BroccoliFloret

And why are you on the railing thread anyway, Fuckwhatever? When you're not railing?
That's totally off. Scotsnet is a small place, and if you want to be part of a flowing conversation, you generally need to come to this thread. Don't be that thread police person.
titsintiers · 04/09/2021 21:12

Janet Godley is about as funny as a smear test. Her accent is inconsequential to that.

Scottishskifun · 04/09/2021 21:20

@elephantofrisk oh definitely!

I think most people outside of the North East without exposure would struggle I remember Jimmy Carr being completely baffled by the response from a audience member speaking in Doric! I mean some words like oxter, quine or tuechter are very hard to even guess!

Oh we used oxter and tuechter in Edinburgh, it's barry ken!

OnceUponAWhine · 04/09/2021 21:34

Janey Godley telt-ing us is worse than Jason with his unsolicited tatty spoon advice at Christmas. It’s an incredibly patronising public service message. I’d say it’s the highest marker on the ‘kick your screen over and smash it to feel better’ scale.

All this money being wasted on these shite broadcasts. Money that could be paid to keep libraries open, for instance. Hope the ‘stars’ are donating their fee, if they really do care…

titsintiers · 04/09/2021 21:45

'Stars' 😆😆😆

And in other news, well done Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Whatever is advertised its the business of communication, therefore standard English is required.

I hate hearing Scottish accent on fictional programs inevitably they are exaggerated and slowed down to the point nobody actually talks like that.

Having a very thick accent does hold people back in life, like it or not. If the boss man struggles to understand you, you can guarantee he isn't going to promote you into a position where customers and clients struggle as that could loose business.

Recently I heard DH on a call to a French company, OMG 😲I couldn't believe how amazing this ladies English was. I can barely buy a loaf in French nevermind conduct a business meeting and talk about legal clauses in a contract.
Modern languages is where we should be focusing our efforts not in trying to make us sounds like Rab C Nisbet.

Lockdownbear · 04/09/2021 21:51

The last time I used the word oxter I was about 10 playing elastics.
quine = girl maybe
Tuechter = Highlander and probably very un PC these days.

Oxter is armpit mostly an unsavoury one Yep quine is woman Tuechter just means rural or country compared to a toonser (city dweller) neither is really meant offensive in the North East
ElephantOfRisk · 04/09/2021 22:13

I use oxter quite a lot. As in "I've been up to my oxters in gobshite this morning". I wonder where the word comes from? Probably french :)

ElephantOfRisk · 04/09/2021 22:14

According to professor google, oxter is an old English word. Who knew?

Lockdownbear · 04/09/2021 22:15

Yip oxter as armpit but no link to being unsavoury. I can barely remember any games we actually played with elastics but I do remember we raised the height, ankle, knee, hip, oxter Grin.

Ahh right 🤔 maybe it's just my friends who make it seem like it's unsavoury! 😂

I don't know how majority of doric words came about @elephantofrisk some of them just seem random to me!

Both DH and I did find it bizarre constant media and SG referral to jags as its not a term really used in the North East!

ElephantOfRisk · 04/09/2021 22:32

Can I just have a rail about....rail services?

What's going on now? Can't travel on a Sunday so was trying to meet my sister in Stirling (she was coming from from Edinburgh) on a Saturday instead but that involves her changing work days etc as there are no trains on Sunday - so if she wants to come by train, it's a replacement bus to Linlithgow, a train to Croy and then on to Stirling so that's nearly 2 hours, plus time from her house. Or it's a citylink bus which is an hour and a half but because it doesn't run much, that means in order to meet for lunch, she'd need to leave her house around half 8 and not be back home until nearly 6pm.

It shouldn't be that bloody difficult should it? Understandably she's decided not to bother Sad

Lockdownbear · 04/09/2021 22:38

The train drivers have been striking on Sundays for months.
Very little publicity about it and no hearing anything about dispute resolution.

ElephantOfRisk · 04/09/2021 22:41

Yeah I new about the Sundays which is why she was changing her day off to come on Saturday instead.

Friend railing about Sundays as she hands over her DC to their dad on a sunday morning so she'd quite like to take the train to the city and have a few drinks with friends since it's her only day off work when she doesn't have kids. She is very hacked off.

shouldistop · 04/09/2021 22:54

@Lockdownbear yeah, there doesn't seem to be a Sunday service from milngavie anymore?

shouldistop · 04/09/2021 23:03

I haven't seen the advert, will need to have a watch tomorrow Grin

Made it to my spa day.

The baby has a bad cough Sad really don't want to subject him to a pcr test.
