@runningpink

Thanks everyone for the advice. Think I will see if I can source a lanyard, at least if I have one then I have the option to use it if I’m in a situation where I would need to wear one for longer than 10mins.

@shouldistop i hope you are feeling a little better and make it to your spa day tomorrow

@runningpink I am like you. I can manage a mask for 10 minutes running round the supermarket. Longer than that, no chance. Especially if it's hot and coupled with menopausal hot flushes.

If you look on Amazon you'll find plenty of options. I have two, one lives in my bag, the other in the side pocket of the car door. Nobody has looked twice at me while using it.

Lockdownbear · 04/09/2021 11:25

@IsurviveonCoffeeandWinein2021 hope you are able to get him help today but that's really rotten to have missed a weeks work and school for nothing.

IsurviveonCoffeeandWinein2021 · 04/09/2021 11:45

Thanks everyone. On hold now for an hour 🙄 @Lockdownbear that's it. Self employed house here so you can imagine the potential impact. We are lucky he has employees so it has been fine but it's not ok to just say oh there has been a problem somewhere.

I mean he's going to the bookies to put a bet on 😂 he isn't at deaths door but does need to see a medical professional. You want people to follow the rules then make sure you fucking hold up at your end!

ResilienceWanker · 04/09/2021 12:15

Oh no isurvive - that is ridiculous! I know there are lots of people being tested at the moment, but you're right, it isn't acceptable to just say "oh, sorry, but hey, isn't the NHS lovely". People are only testing because that's the rule, and it's not right to force people to do that and lose money as a result without an efficient and quick turnaround. Hope he gets seen soon.

Hope you're feeling better today too shouldistop. It sounds awful. Horrid being ill for that long. Flowers and a virtual mug of flat coke... Brew

Can I have a wee rant about the fucking AWFUL advert I was subjected to on the radio this afternoon?

Some woman - suspect it was that Godley creature - talking about how covid is ripping through Scotland like "a wean a' uh buffet" and how we should all be "lookin' efter each ither".

Quite why she talks like something out of the Broons... the message though, it's all just stay at home and the bollocky "just because you can doesn't mean you should".

Also - one of the big criticisms of the messaging throughout this is that it's in English only. And not accessible to people whose first language is Romanian, or Arabic, or Punjabi. And why the Sottish "facts" campaign was so utterly crap because it was so convoluted that none of us could remember what it was, compared with the three words "hands, face, space".

So now, to deal with vaccine hesitancy, especially in those groups, they trundle out some woman trying to be funny in a very strong dialect accent?

They haven't a fucking clue.

Och, bit wur aww jock tamson's bairns eh?

Yep does my head in. We don't need all the inappropriate twee shite or the fucking adverts at all tbh if we need to be lectured at then at least make it understandable to as many folk as possible. I'm happy to chat to my family and pals in whatever local vernacular is called for,

but when you are trying to get information across then accessibility trumps trying to be funny/make a point about how Scottish you are.

Lidlfix · 04/09/2021 19:23

It is toe curlingly awful. I enjoy dialects, colloquialisms, and have a sense of humour (I think) but cannot stand this .

WouldBeGood · 04/09/2021 19:24

It’s appalling! Saw it today and cringed

forfucksakenett · 04/09/2021 19:26

It's a perfectly valid form of communication/ way to speak.

I'm glad we're seeing more of it and hopefully the hyacinth bucket type snobbery will eventually disappear.

runningpink · 04/09/2021 19:29

That one is particularly bad! I’m fed up that every time I put the radio or tv on there is a stupid bloody covid related advert talking down to us like wee bairns.

I don’t care anymore. Think they are probably doing more harm than good.

ElephantOfRisk · 04/09/2021 19:32

Jeez, it's not about snobbery, it's an official communication, it's needs to be accessible to everybody. Well actually it doesn't as we are all sick of the pish but from an official point of view it does.

BroccoliFloret · 04/09/2021 19:34

Quelle surprise, the cheerleader for the SNP pops up to say what a fantastic job they are doing and how wonderful their messaging is. Hmm

Depends what you want from your communication though doesn't it? Do you want to actually BE UNDERSTOOD by everyone living in the country, given that you must think it's important message to get across, or do you want to use someone speaking in a dialect which many people won't understand?

I saw someone refer to Godley as Sturgeon's court jester and speculating what she might do when the SNP are no more. Valid question.

ElephantOfRisk · 04/09/2021 19:38

Maybe we should get the adverts in Doric or done by someone from Selkirk, all perfectly valid ways of communication but possibly not easily understood by a lot of folk in the central belt never mind folk for whom english is a 2nd (or more) language.

OhWhatsTheDifference · 04/09/2021 19:49

I saw Janey Godley live about five years ago and after the first ten minutes she just kept repeating the same things over and over with more swear words and a thicker accent.

The audience was stoney faced 😐 and we ducked out at the interval.

forfucksakenett · 04/09/2021 19:57

@BroccoliFloret I'm not surprised then that you struggled with the advert given that your comprehension skills appear to be severely lacking. You managed to deduce a lot of incorrect nonsense about me from my very short and simple post.

The irony of you cringing at the use of regional dialect while using phrases such as 'quelle surprise' and 'quite why' is also bloody brilliant. 🤦🏻‍♀️

🤣🤣🤣

BroccoliFloret · 04/09/2021 20:08

Can we have the next one in Morse Code? That's a perfectly valid form of communication too.

BroccoliFloret · 04/09/2021 20:10

And why are you on the railing thread anyway, Fuckwhatever? When you're not railing?

forfucksakenett · 04/09/2021 20:14

Scotland uses Scottish dialect in advert shocker. People lose their shit. 🙄

I was railing against snobbery. Smile

BroccoliFloret · 04/09/2021 20:20

snobbery to suggest that this sort of dialect isn't easily understood?

Ok then. Hmm

ElephantOfRisk · 04/09/2021 20:25

Why does the "scottish dialect" always need to be weegie though? And anyone suggesting that this isn't the best idea for something that meant to be understood by everyone is just a snob?

Is this all just to buy into Glaswegians being the only friendly funny folk in Scotland and we'll all just think how funny and droll it all is whilst we are being lectured at - again?

forfucksakenett · 04/09/2021 20:26

I'm going to direct you back to your original post where you managed to raise your concerns about the message being understood by people whilst also channeling your inner Hyacinth Bucket.

Scottishskifun · 04/09/2021 20:26

😂 I can understand doric I'm used to it (as an English person) I don't understand "Scots" dialect as we don't have it around here. I got the jist of the advert but can't say I understood it!
ElephantOfRisk · 04/09/2021 20:33

I have family from Aberdeen and the Borders and Inverness and a few other places. Inverness is easily understandable, some Borders is okay, I can catch a bit of Doric but as soon as you get to a speed then I'm out. I don't think i'm a snob though, no-one is saying that the adverts can only be in a RP accent. I mean I hate Jason Leitch's voice and the adverts but they can be generally understood - by which i mean i can hear what words he is saying but not why.. Grin

Absolutely. Some posters were clearly being exceptionally snobby about it though. It's not snobbish in and of itself to raise concerns about the use of dialect.

I love the sound of Doric! Don't understand all of it but do love it.

BroccoliFloret · 04/09/2021 20:37

As well Elephant it's not even everyone in Glasgow. I live I. Glasgow and nobody I know speaks like that.
