The railing goes on

But I’m railing in the wind. Whole world gone mental.

I’m living a weird life where I don’t want to go to anything as I’m scared it will be Covid mental and thus ruined.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the world has gone completely mad! It's like COVID has skewed everyone's sense of proportion and/or what is reasonable.

ResilienceWanker · 14/09/2021 11:29

I agree we should be helping with the programme in poorer countries too. But tbh I don't think it's really an either/or sum - us deciding not to go ahead with kids wouldn't mean we could send those doses to Africa instead! The infrastructure, PPE/ equipment availability, healthcare systems etc are so different, there needs to be a totally separate programme set up to address these in each country - not just the physical vaccine, or even the money we would have otherwise spent on vaccines which would be a drop in the ocean. Though I agree it's not a good look that rich countries are having this debate over marginal benefit, whereas many countries still have 70+ yo dying without vaccine.

I would really like some idea where Scotland is going with all this too... My feeling is that individuals and businesses will just get less and less "compliant" over the winter, when it's obvious that we are so out of step with the rest of the UK with minimal difference in outcome - and then things like masks and passports and whatnot will be formally dropped in spring. Though who knows. Maybe NSs announcement today will be "hey, it's all off folks... You can all go round bare faced, licking people like its 2019". Though even then I think our local shop will still keep its sodding one way arrows on the floor.

mapleleavesreturn · 14/09/2021 11:37

I agree with would the focus now should really be on making sure that everyone at risk has maximum protection, wherever they are in the world, but I do think it's good that families with an at risk member can decide to vaccinate 12-15 if it's helpful for their circumstances.

Ianrankinfan · 14/09/2021 12:13

[quote ElephantOfRisk]Great article by Brian Monteith about the NHS in today's Scotsman. Well actually, it's not great, it's terrible what he has to say but well worth a read.

Very good article pointing out that the Scottish NHS was in a bad way even before Covid. Thanks for posting @ElephantOfRisk

ElephantOfRisk · 14/09/2021 12:39

Yes @Ianrankinfan, i've posted before at money allocated for the NHS being diverted by scotgov, but he puts it more eloquently and much more comprehensively than me.

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 14/09/2021 14:54

Who knows if we'll stay 'out of step' though with the rest of the UK, given that the announcement from WM today seemed to suggest most measures will remain on the table over the winter.

ResilienceWanker · 14/09/2021 15:06

Yes, they're remaining on the table - but not being plated up to them quite yet. (And stretching the dodgy analogy further than it can reasonably go, by the time they are introduced down south over winter, our version of them will be congealed and cold and inedible because we've had them on our plate since now and don't fancy eating any more... Wink)

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 14/09/2021 15:10

Haha that's a lovely image! Grin

Explosivefarts · 14/09/2021 15:42

So kids are to offered the jab at drop in centers from Monday here in Scotland but they need to be with parents. Said they will then roll it out in schools for those who didn’t go to drop in. It will be hard for children to get vaccinated without their parents permissions. Our drop in is over half an hour away and not a bus route.

MaxNormal · 14/09/2021 15:57

@WouldBeGood agree with everything you're saying. It's like any sense of proportion has been lost as well as the ability to prioritise multiple factors. It's all just covid and only covid. It's like being dragged against one's will into a religious cult.

sartorius · 14/09/2021 16:34

I'm railing about the restriction still placed on our students education compared to elsewhere.
Over on another thread there's parents horrified about how much is online in Scottish universities again.
One person's daughter paying £9,000 a year to Edinburgh uni for one hr f2f a fortnight!
Another Edinburgh student is only getting a normal uni education this year as she's gone to a university abroad on an exchange.
Meanwhile there's lecturers from English unis on saying they are running a near normal programme at their unis.

My DD1 has 1/3 in person teaching and rest online and that seems to be quite good by what I'm reading.
We're going to have a load of our scientists, nurses, engineers etc lacking the appropriate skills in a few yrs time

But heyho they can go to cinemas, nightclubs and the likes with no restrictions

mibbelucieachwell · 14/09/2021 16:48

Most students I know are vaccinated. I agree it seems so unfair. DS had an almost normal timetable from 8th March in London. It was a practical subject but still...

He's getting a proper graduation ceremony in November too with 2 guests per graduate allowed. So unfair for the students in Scotland.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 14/09/2021 16:54

I pity the children in school (and teachers too I guess!) who are now facing another month of mask wearing because cases are high. If they're going to insist on disadvantaging Scottish students in this way, I wish they would publish some actual evidence that this helps in any way at all, as it seems to have had fuck all effect on this current wave and thus seems completely pointless to me.

WouldBeGood · 14/09/2021 16:56

It’s exactly like that @MaxNormal. I could just cry.

OP posts:
MaxNormal · 14/09/2021 17:05

Every time there's an inkling of an end in sight there's some new hysteria, new restriction, new bit of "science" that is set in stone in everyone's heads until it inevitably changes again, new set of hoops to jump through.....
I have cried on more than one occasion.

sartorius · 14/09/2021 17:15

Well the English schools have been back just over a week so I suppose any day now we will have real time data on face masks in schools Hmm

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 14/09/2021 17:24

Quite a lot of them have been back considerably longer than that @sartorius - no indication of a mask-free apocalypse thus far. In fact cases are trending down....

sartorius · 14/09/2021 17:31

Not all surprised face masks are staying in schools.
SG have made a big thing of keeping it law to wear in indoor public places for health reasons.
If it's so unsafe to remove them then teaching unions won't allow it.

Groovee · 14/09/2021 17:31

news.stv.tv/scotland/face-coverings-and-physical-distancing-rules-in-schools-extended

I said this in August, then it will be Christmas then February then before we know it July. 🤬🤬🤬

mapleleavesreturn · 14/09/2021 17:35

That's bad news for secondary schools....

WouldBeGood · 14/09/2021 17:41

It shouldn’t be up to teaching unions

OP posts:
WouldBeGood · 14/09/2021 17:42

Yes, it’ll be oh, just til all teenagers jagged, second jagged, third jagged; boosters; little kids jagged; ooh! Scary new variant; nhs busy; close pubs!! Ad fucking Infinitum

OP posts:
WouldBeGood · 14/09/2021 17:49

David Attenborough will be doing a show: “And here we are, looking at the 101st Railing thread. Started back in 2021, Wouldbegood can be seen sobbing and beating her head off the walls of her Covid secure padded cell, cries of desks if escaping from the N95 mask now compulsory at all times. Her offspring are being cared for in the State Anti Illness facilities, but are still waiting for free laptops to access the only permitted learning”

OP posts:
Lidlfix · 14/09/2021 17:59

It's not up to teaching unions. Railing against this inaccuracy. Again. Repeating incorrect information won't make suddenly make the speaker correct.
