seeing most small kids with any belonging - it gets dropped on the floor, covered in food and mud, chewed, dropped on toilet floors etc. I expect they're good for their immune system!

mibbelucieachwell · 11/09/2021 11:59

Good morning fellow railers.

Here's my take on cloth masks fwiw. surely cloth masks only prevent droplets being ingested or breathed in? So would reduce spread by an infected person standing close enough to pass sneezes or coughs directly onto them.

But aerosol particles build up inside so I can't think that cloth masks would prevent anyone breathing in virus particles? A disproportionate measure in my opinion.

Last night I watched a documentary (polemic as DH described it) about the 'counter terror' laws passed by the Blair administration after the 2001 attack on America and their misuse. It's really made me think about how covid measures are likely to be the thin end of the wedge.

People offer refer to other countries which have had identity cards for a long time. But these were usually introduced during wars as a temporary measure. Successive governments don't usually want to give them up.

Haudyourwheesht · 11/09/2021 18:26

There's been a real shift away from them I feel. We were at soft play this morning (germs!!) and only a few people were wearing them to walk about.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 11/09/2021 23:42

Taking a break from railing to revel in how amazing Emma Raducanu is! 18 years old and cooler than I ever am when under pressure. It's great to have a genuinely brilliant British player to get behind again.

ssd · 12/09/2021 00:05

Yes she was fantastic !!!!

listentomydeclaration · 12/09/2021 09:55

So England are not going ahead with vaccine passports then

So it will be very much Scotland vs England, or NS vs BJ

Whose strategy will work? Scotland has the highest cases but I didn't feel safe on my visit to England last week.

Hopefully the rumours of 12-15yos being vaccinated are true. I definitely think that will make a difference.

Scottishskifun · 12/09/2021 10:02

Ah the irony!
I think NS will be stamping her foot right now as the pressure from businesses will be even greater!

I suppose it depends on what you are used to high controls doesn't equate to low numbers as is very obvious at the moment so then it's a personal judgement thing like anything in life.

Just as it has been all the way through the pandemic then? Nicola goes harder than Boris to show how amazing and caring she is?

I am very much looking forward to my visit next month to England and don't think it's unsafe in the slightest. Scotland has the highest case rates so why do you feel unsafe in a place which is safer?

I am also unconvinced on vaccinating 12-15 year olds. These people do not get ill with covid, the ones in that age group who are vulnerable are protected. Vaccinating the others is a political decision and i'm not sure i'm on board with that. I have a 13 year old son.

WouldBeGood · 12/09/2021 10:05

Absolutely agree with all that @KingsleyShacklebolt.

Scotland now has the highest rates in Europe. Anywhere else is “safer”.

ssd · 12/09/2021 10:15

I know Scotland is shite just now but i think with English schools going back the cases there will sky rocket as well. It's always been like a see saw with us and them.
I wouldn't be rushing the get my boys vaccinated if they were 12-15.

ElephantOfRisk · 12/09/2021 10:40

Jackie Baillie on vaccination passports...

StarryEyeSurprise · 12/09/2021 10:44

England's rates were double Scotland's before our schools returned (140 and 70 respectively). Schools are a huge driver and always have been.

ssd · 12/09/2021 10:46

Railing against feckin TRANSMT.
Am lying in my nice quiet bed with a cuppa and i can hear it thumping away. Intermittently, like they are practicing how to use equipment.
Bloody noisy buggers.

sartorius · 12/09/2021 10:50

So England are not going ahead with vaccine passports then

Well this doesn't surprise me at all.
It was pretty obvious when Boris "gave notice" of 2 months that he was doing it to increase vaccine uptake in youngsters!

I can't stand his Tory Gov but they DO believe in a liberal democracy with as little state intrusion in private life as possible.
And this would have been a step way too far

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 12/09/2021 11:03

I'm not convinced England's figures will sky rocket tbh. There's no sign of it so far, and our super high peak was probably compounded by the dropping of restrictions at the same time, both late on the summer. England by contrast had 6 weeks of moderate infection from mid summer to get a lot of natural immunity built up first. I guess we'll find out in a week or so, but Scotland seems to have a particular problem rather than this being part of a known pattern. (And yes, almost anywhere is 'safer' than Scotland right now!)

Apparently England have dropped vaccine passports because we shouldn't take measures for the sake of them and there wasn't sufficient evidence of benefit. All of which also applies in Scotland of course, but we have a much more authoritarian regime who are less for individual liberty. It always seemed out of step with Tory values tbh and of course there is such a thing as a back bench rebellion down there, so I wonder of floating the idea a couple of months ago was to 'encourage' vaccination in the young.

runningpink · 12/09/2021 12:01

Also heard on the radio something about England wanting to stop PCR for travel ASAP.
I was running so didn’t hear it all properly.

Surely that will just encourage Scottish folk to book holidays from English airports even more than they already are?

mapleleavesreturn · 12/09/2021 12:14

'wasn't significant evidence of benefit' well that's so sensible.

Yes, absolutely if England abolishes PCRs for travel that's exactly what''ll happen. I can't quite see it though, maybe by the Spring it could happen.

ssd · 12/09/2021 13:09

I think we'll definitely drop vaccine passports here, businesses will go crazy if we dont

listentomydeclaration · 12/09/2021 14:08

@KingsleyShacklebolt my DD is also 13. She wans the vaccine and I want her to get it.

Anything that will lessen disruption to education is a good thing.

I am no fan of NS. I hate many of the rules. I also hate having no rules at all. I am not sure what rules are best but definitely not nothing at all.

MaxNormal · 12/09/2021 14:23

Although I obviously live in Scotland, I'm actually weak with relief that Westminster won't be implementing the passports, I feel a lot less hopeless than a few days ago.

God I hope so we are off in a few weeks and flying through England as at time of booking there was over a £200 price difference just in tests and Scottish flights kept getting cancelled!

I think we will keep flying through England despite having to travel for the next year at least as I simply don't trust SG to decide last minute that they wish to be different!

Calmdown14 · 12/09/2021 17:33

I just can't see how vaccine passports will work in practice.
Yes you can just flash your phone but without a corroboration of your identity it means nothing. Dead easy to take a screen grab of the app and show that instead, surely?
And half of Scotland doesn't have 4G. Good luck opening it where I live.

runningpink · 12/09/2021 18:09

@Scottishskifun just found this

I think Johnson and co are scrapping covid passports in order to raise their popularity again, apparently they're having a dip and they need something to get it back. Nothing to do with them being less involved in people's lives or caring about us.

WouldBeGood · 12/09/2021 18:55

I think they’re scrapping them as there’s no evidence at all that they will work and they will trash businesses.
