Great name! Grin

ElephantOfRisk · 29/07/2021 21:28

It filled up while I was typing my post :) Thanks for the new thread

DS2 had post issues from a strep throat that required him to be hospitalised and have his kidneys under supervision for a while. The consultant he saw for his dyspraxia suggested it might have been triggered because of this. More understanding about long term consequences for this stuff would be good to prevent issues further down the line.

They speak well of you too.... Grin

There is a good podcast by the zoe app available on long covid on you tube was done on Tuesday.
It's fully recognised as a condition by NICE but some GPs and medical professionals are definitely slow.
They have been doing lots of work in conjunction with ME specialists as well. It's similar in various ways to other post viral fatigue syndromes and glandular fever but then has its own unique elements similar to autoimmune conditions as well such as inflammation of organs, much greater risk of blood clot and lack of synchronisation between brain and lungs for oxygen delivery (which then causes CO2 build up at the wrong point in body demand).

There is a blood test currently being developed (different antibody markers have been found) but will be 6 months.

There is lots of data and lots more ongoing but they have found a lot of these things out also from the long covid clinics themselves (I mean they are one massive research opportunity). They also think that asthmatics may have a different form slightly and have found that asthmatics regardless of how mild are more at risk of long covid.

The problem is that its multidimensional across many different disciplines, a friend is waiting on 5 different consultant appointments for her long covid. If it's in one place then not only do you get seen by who you need to but it means those waiting lists aren't all taken up with the thousands of long covid patients.

Christ that sounds mega frustrating @Scottishskifun

How are you feeling now?

How are you feeling now?

My daily fevers have been reducing massively since my second jab 2 weeks ago only had 1 this week compared to 4-6 fever spikes a day (basically whenever paracetamol wore off) for the last 6/7 weeks. It makes a huge difference! I mean I still have fatigue and pain, still pacing every aspect of every day but I don't think I realised how exhausting they were!

Don't know if its temporary or permanent (I had a 5 week improvement with fevers and headaches after first jab just didn't realise it!) but will enjoy it whilst I can (in my pacing limits 😂)

Just joining in with the angry fannies.
I had lost you all earlier when the last thread disappeared from 'threads I'm on' and 'threads I'm watching' No idea why!

Haudyourwheesht · 29/07/2021 22:21

Checking in. Although the last one never appeared in the 'threads I'm on' which is annoying.

I do think long Covid clinics would be a great idea but how would they be staffed? We are struggling greatly with next to no staff (and have been for months) as they're all burned out and are off long term with stress. I do hope the situation improves but as all areas of the NHS are struggling I don't know where extra staff would come from to staff and run such clinics.

Scottishskifun · 29/07/2021 23:14

@ladylunchalot staffing is a major issue the hospital ones in England do it as a clinic days, some university based Dr's doing clinic days. But some also video call in the lead up to assess who needs to see who within the team as symptoms can be so wide.

I do think that we should pull on private sector hospitals where possible for resources to assist. Not forever as obviously that would cost a very large sum but it's used when wait times get too long and was used in the very early days of the pandemic. It could get a lot of wait lists down a lot quicker and hopefully staff will be less burnt out

Your a hoot @dancemom

Ladylunchalot · 29/07/2021 23:20

@Scottishskifun I hear what you're saying but I just don't think there is any spare funding that can be utilised for clinics. It's hard enough to get replacement staff or even bank staff - it feels like it's coming out of management's personal funds! Just too many patients to deal with and nowhere near enough cash or funds to do so.
Staff do want to help and have gone above and beyond but there's only so much they can do. Pretty shit though for everyone.

ResilienceWanker · 30/07/2021 08:25

I understand the issue with staffing, but surely, as with anything, it's a matter of priorities. Money seems to be found for other policy decisions (health and otherwise), to cover staffing, resources and whatever, so why not this? Usually the argument is that the money spent will save overall, and I don't understand why that isn't the case here. Even if only to free up GP time and resources to deal with all the rest of their patients!

YeDancer · 30/07/2021 08:26

here to fanny about

Scottishskifun · 30/07/2021 10:55

@ladylunchalot personally I think they should redirect funding to the NHS!
If they magically have money for the potential another referendum vote at however many millions setting that up costs then they should use that money on the main priorities of reducing backlog quickly to get diagnosis across all of the issues and help it recover quicker!

Just placemarking. Also £16 for softplay 🙈 for 2 kids one only a toddler. When this shitstorm is over I think we will all be feeling the financial side of it for a very long time!

ElephantOfRisk · 30/07/2021 10:58

And in the meantime we are the drug death capital of Europe. Again. Passed the 10k drug deaths since snp came to power a couple of days ago. It's a scandal but they are sorry so that'll be fine then. I'm sure the families of the dead are okay with that...

Crikey that's an expensive softplay! Ours is £3 for under 5s and £5 for over 5s!

I suppose a lot will have had to increase prices due to how long they were closed for of over a year!

TheGenealogist · 30/07/2021 11:29

Looking forward to my against the law visit to mum and dad when my sister and her family are there on Monday.

Any news about the schools yet? Under a fortnight until ours are back.

IncludeWomenInThePrequel · 30/07/2021 12:15

I am railing against my slight hangover. But I did go to two - YES TWO - pubs last night so that was very exciting.

Less exciting when I have three Zoom meetings today and can't really disguise my 'for fuck's sake who schedules meetings did Friday afternoon' face.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 30/07/2021 12:25

Yep @ElephantOfRisk, top of the European league for all the wrong reasons yet again. The deaths will only be the tip of the iceberg too - how many are addicts but haven't died? No doubt this will be Westminster's fault somehow (despite the UK, with the same laws, showing less than a third of our deaths). I see the Scottish Tories are putting forward a bill to tackle it - hopefully they can all put their politics to one side for a minute and work together because this is beyond disgraceful.
